Chargers trade Davis to 49ers for Woods

Wednesday, April 12, 2006

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Chargers have traded cornerback Sammy Davis to the San Francisco 49ers for wide receiver Rashaun Woods.

Woods (6-2, 202), was selected by the 49ers in the first-round (31st overall) of the 2004 NFL Draft. The former two-time All-American from Oklahoma State spent the last 13 weeks of the 2005 season on Injured-Reserve. He played in 14 games as a rookie with the 49ers.

Davis, also a former first-rounder in 2003, was in his third season with the Chargers. He appeared in 44 games with 30 starts and recorded three interceptions for the Bolts.

guy sure seems like a bust. I thought he was going to be very special too.

maybe a change of scenery will help though.

Anyhow, it looks like junk for junk trade. Makes me think the Chargers are going with a SS/CB with their pick at #19.

I think Woods now battles Osgood for WR4 duties, and could rise as high as WR3 in TC if Vincent Jackson busts. It's a good pickup for the Bolts IMO.

I still feel that VJ is going to get a lot more action this year. McCardell, Parker, VJ, Woods and Osgood don't seem very threatening down field though.

I never really understood why Woods fell out of favor so much in SF. Granted he was injured one way or another for most of the time. If Davis was expendable for SD, then I think this a good trade for them because Woods could still have something left remotely to the reason why every team had him projected faily high during draft time.

Good bass fishin down in SD?

Oh until Rivers learns to beat the blitz it doesnt really matter who's running downfield. They just need someone who can swat the ball away from the defensive backs.

Correct me if Im wrong, but doesnt this seem slightly lopsided? Woods, who has rarely been more than a #5 WR for the WR-starved Chargers gets traded for a guy who has started 30 games for the Bolts in 3 years? Was Davis THAT bad?

Like most Charger CBs, he looks good then gets beat, then looks good....etcDidn't they give up Engelberger for a talented but not so good CB last year?

Rashaun Woods IMO has the potential to become a good WR2 or at least a really solid WR3. Rashaun Woods>Vincent Jackson.

whomever makes it onto the field is better :)

from what I've read/heard, the Chargers still have high hopes for Vincent Jackson.

Woods is still young enough that he could emerge. We've seen plenty of WRs over the years not do much until their 3rd year in the league. While it is true that few of these "3rd year breakouts" have done as little as Woods has over the past couple years, maybe the move to a better team with some veterans around to help mentor him a bit will allow him to salvage his career.

if Vincent Jackson busts
I thought you had this guy pegged as the next #2 receiver in the Charger core after Gates? Now you are conceding that he may bust?
still a big VJax believer - but he is by no means a sure thing. Can't hurt bringing in another 1st round talent at WR to compete. Now we won't have to reach and overpay for Chad Jackson or Santonio Holmes.

Were his "inactives" last year due to injury or performance? I didn't follow him at all last season, and remember something about him being injured, but I don't remember if it was anything that should have kept him inactive for 14 games.

Last year, groin and hamstring problems again sidelined him for much of training camp and he was in danger of being released before securing a roster spot with an eight-catch, 89-yard game in the exhibition finale at San Diego. However, Woods was deactivated for the first three games, then suffered a thumb injury in practice and was placed on injured reserve, ending his season.
http://www.mercurynews.com/mld/mercurynews...rs/14328156.htmthat preseason game against San Diego not only saved him from getting cut, but also likely had a lot to do with this trade. if the 49ers were about to cut him, I'm guessing the inactives early in the season were simply due to the coaching staff thinking he wasn't very good.

I'd rather have Chad jackson than R.Woods.Sammy ya won't be missed.

If you think Woods has any bearing whatsoever on the Chargers' draft plans, you are sorely mistaken. He'll be lucky to make the team.

:o
All we really have to go on with Woods is his college career, and he was incredibly good then, even against good teams (I'm an OU alumnus and saw him singlehandedly win a game against OU's vaunted defense). With Vincent Jackson, we don't really have anything to go on. He was at a small enough school that few of us ever saw him play. Neither has really gotten on the field in the NFL yet, so the impression of Woods naturally sticks with people.I think he deserved another shot, now we'll see if he can do anything with it.

 You're insane. Woods has 0% chance of getting cut, and the Bolts will not take Jackson or Holmes if they are there.

did you miss Aaron's post above where he "clipped" how Woods WAS almost cut from SF last year?

:lmao: Sure Tommy. SD makes a trade for a #5 WR, and that drastically shifts their draft board.

Watching for the Woods Hype train to start up...

:D

(I own the guy in 2 leagues)

I'm saying this mostly in jest, but the guy was great in college, you never know what a change in scenery, better QB, better coaching, will do for a guy.

As a niners fan, if you can get anything for a guy like Woods it is a victory. They need bodies in the secondary, and the odds of Woods even making the team letting alone being a productive fantasy player are fairly low.

This is being referred to on the Chargers forum as a "bust for bust" trade. Both sides get something for what they consider nothing. Most Charger fans thought Davis needed to go after he lost the nickel job to Jamar Fletcher.

FWIW, when Oklahoma State played Texas A&M, Sammy Davis covered Rashaun Woods. Woods had 7 catches for 79 yards.

I think both teams helped themselves here, although the 49ers helped themselves more than the Chargers did. Davis struggled at times, but he also showed flashes of good coverage skills. Woods hasn't shown flashes of anything.

It's always nice to have competition, but I think Woods is an extreme longshot to beat out Vincent Jackson for the WR3 spot (or WR4 spot depending on the draft). But if Davis doesn't fit into the Chargers' plans anymore, it's nice that they could get something for him. (Kind of like when they traded David Boston for Jamar Fletcher. They were going to cut him anyway, so a trade for a former first-round draft pick looks great by comparison.)

This looks like a great trade for the Chargers. They get a WR with potential for their #4 CB who has been given every chance to win the starting job over Florence. Woods didn't fit into the 49ers plans and maybe he never will develop and they at least got a physically talented CB, if not a consistent one.

49ers Trade Rashaun Woods

FORMER NO. 1 PICK GOES TO SAN DIEGO FOR CORNERBACK

By Dennis Georgatos

Mercury News

Wide receiver Rashaun Woods, whose two-year stay with the 49ers was marked by injury and disappointment, was traded Wednesday to the San Diego Chargers in exchange for cornerback Sammy Davis.

``This was an opportunity for us to strengthen ourselves at a position of need with a proven NFL starter,'' Coach Mike Nolan said in a statement. ``After strengthening the wide receiver position with the addition of free agents Antonio Bryant and Bryan Gilmore, we felt it was important to focus on other areas to improve our team. Davis will be able to step in from day one and challenge for a starting role.''

Woods was never able to do that while he was with the 49ers. A first-round pick (31st overall) by former General Manager Terry Donahue in 2004, Woods missed most of training camp as a rookie because of hamstring problems and failed to make an impact on the field the rest of the season.

Davis, 26, was the Chargers' first-round pick (30th overall) in 2003. He has been used both as a starter and a nickel back by San Diego. In 44 games, he has 122 tackles, three interceptions, one sack and 20 passes defensed.

With the 49ers, he's expected to compete for a starting role. The 49ers released injury-plagued Ahmed Plummer in February, creating a wide-open competition for the left cornerback spot.

Any chance Woods plays Special teams? I know he's not a speedster, and Sprooles should have the KR/PR job locked up, but another role in ST?

He's at best the #4 WR for the Chargers this year behind McCardell, Parker, and VJ. I'd say the best hope for him is to play well enough to beat out Parker for the #2 if McCardell retires next year.

LET ME ENJOY THE POTENTIAL OF RASHAUN WOODS FOR 1 DAY BEFORE PISSING ON MY PARADE WITH FACTS AND LOGIC DIESEL!

I don't want to start a new all-purpose general Charger rah-rah thread, so I'll just stick this here.

Charger highlight video

It is making me yearn for the season opener against the Raiders to arrive. (Speaking of which, here's what Tomlinson's done in eight career games against the Raiders so far: 1,112 yards rushing, 8 rushing TDs, 32 receptions for 162 yards and 2 TDs, 2 passes for TDs.)

This is a huge upgrade for the Charger's Bass Fishing Team.
:lmao: My thoughts exactly. Woods will love the local bass lakes. They're way underrated. AJ is losing it the same way Beathard did. I think the temperate salt air lightly perfumed with eucalyptus and chamomile causes these genius GMs to lose their vision and focus on the scantily clad betties here and there. It makes dumping your franchise QB a small issue, and a bass fishing bust of a wr and interesting guy to bring to town and hang out with. Maybe AJ wants to learn to fish from his surfboard like Bobby did. Rashaun is nice value if that's what you need.

Poor Marty. He thought Davis was coming along.
