Rate and Reflect on Your Overall Draft Experience (1 Viewer)

The excitement was definitely in the air. I was listening to the draft on Sirius, watching ESPN, and also in a draft chat room.

The first two picks were easy, but the third pick for Tyson Jackson was an interesting one, I say interesting because many people have had Curry going to the Chiefs for quite some time and then at the last minute everyone updated their mocks for Tyson going to the Chiefs so it wasn't too much of a surprise. But after that is when it really got interesting.

The Seahawks took Curry and I looked at my mock and said well I can still come out of this if Cleveland takes Monroe, but if not then my mock could be in trouble over the next 10 picks or so.

That’s when I heard the Jets fans screaming and the radio saying, “There has been a trade”. The TV cut to Sanchez and he had a smile from ear to ear and he was on the phone. Wow, this was an unexpected surprise and well played by the NFL. Did I also mention that the Jets fans were happy? And it was draft day too. Who would have predicted this kind of drama?

Okay so back to my mock. Well at this point my mock is pretty much screwed as was probably about 95% of the other mocks.

The draft was going very quickly and, except for the Sanchez pick, it was starting to annoy me that they were showing the players on their phones before the pick was in and giving every pick away. I like to have some element of surprise when the names are called on the podium. However, for the most part, the first 15 picks were lacking what I am used to. We are all used to hearing the selection and then having our brains go through all the motions of agreeing, disagreeing, and bringing it all in. By the time we heard the selection we already knew the pick. Maybe the NFL should reconsider having so many cameras on the players next year. As great as the Sanchez pick was to see it unfold on camera, it just wasn’t worth it. Can you imagine if there would have just been one pick after another with no trades or surprises? That would have been the worst draft I had ever seen. The only thing keeping me on the edge on my seat at all were the numerous trades, which we don’t usually see.

So back to the actual drafting. Finally a pick that makes sense. The Bengals take promise over character. Now that’s more like it. I have seen this pick before and I like it because now my mock is three out of six. The issue being that I only have four of the top six players taken, which left Monroe and Crabtree on the board and they should have already been gone.

Then the Raiders pick shakes the head of many, even though we all knew they could do it because they have so many times before. Would any of the other 31 teams have picked Heyward-Bey over Crabtree or Maclin? I doubt it but we don’t know that for sure.

As the draft played itself out we saw some interesting falls, such as Crabtree to the 49ers, Orakpo to the Redskins, Maclin to the Eagles, and Wells to the Cardinals. We also saw players taken earlier than expected such as Moreno, English, Pettigrew, and Mack. I didn’t consider Donald Brown a surprise at all because I had him to the Colts in a few of my earlier mocks, just not this one.

I am still scratching my head on a few things. Not only did the Bills not take an OT in the first round, but they didn’t take one at all. Beatty fell pretty far too.

Overall I will say the draft was a fun experience, however it was a little over hyped and over done and not as great as it could have been. It could have used a few less cameras on the early players being taken. Just think about how much fun it would have been had we not known the pick five minutes before the actual selection. On a scale of 10, I give this draft experience a 6.5.

If anyone is still reading and wondering. I scored six picks correctly in the first round. Not bad, considering it got derailed so early. I had many positions chosen corectly. My NFL "You make the Pick Score" was 800. Overall not one of my better years.

How was your draft experience?
