Rating the top TE's for the rest of the season (1 Viewer)

The TE position seems to be in a great deal of upheaval so far this season. Many, if not most, of the big names haven't produced. I thought we might debate who the top 5 or so will be from here on out.

This is how I see it...

1. Winslow - a primary option in the offense and is demonstrating great effort and ability. His lingering injury is holding him back, and it's unclear what Jurevicious's presence will do to his numbers.

2. Heap - getting a ton of red zone looks. Offense looks decent, and will probably improve with time. Little downside here.

3. Gonzalez - Green is going to be out for awhile. Gonzalez is getting a ton of targets right now, and isn't being held in to block as much as we feared. Looks good.

4. Desmond Clark - Leads all TEs in yards, even though he's been getting limited playing time due to injury the past two games. This offense has opened up and its clear that Clark is a focal point. As teams have to shift to defend Berrian, I think Clark starts getting more yards after catch.

5. L.J. Smith - Offense looks good, and with the lingering injuries to the WRs, I think we see him targeted a lot.

Shockey, I think, falls due to injury. Martyball is back in SD and I think Gates continues to suffer.

I just wish that Winslow would get his tail off of the weekly injury report. I have both KW and Gates and I keep using Gates due to the Questionable status every week (and for old times sake, I guess). Probably my lineup version of Martyball. I'll go with KW this week. What's that? Nobody cares about my team? Sorry.

Gates will rebound enough to finish somewhere in the top 5.Clark won't keep it up, especially with John Gilmore stealing RZ targets and the running game yet to get rolling. The others, I agree. The end-of-year Top 5 includes Heap, Gonzo, Smith, Gates, and Winslow. Crumpler and Watson next in line.

Gonzo - KC has shown us nothing that he will return to form

Gates - Should do OK, but it looks like his reliance is no longer needed due to Martyball

My TE's to get:

LJ Smith - huge part of Phi passing offense

Winslow - looks to be coming on slowly but Cle's 2nd option in the passing game

Desmond Clark - dont know if he will keep it up or not

Heap - looks to be healthy and having McNair's confidence

Cooley - becoming more of a part of Was offense

I don't have the feeling that Winslow will last the whole year - I believe this is the same knee he had reconstructive surgery following his motorcycle accident.

I like Todd Heap, only because it seems in the red zone McNair has blinders on and only throws to the TEs.

Heap has 3 TDs and Wilcox 2.

I could see Heap ending up with 10TDs this year.

Speaking of blinders, how many weeks do people need to see where Grossman is targeting Clark? Yes, the Bears passing game has been horrific over the past few years, but things change. Its entirely possible that Clark's production stays the same or even increases over the rest of the season.

I think people are too invested in the amount of energy put into off season talk that its hard to change minds.

Its entirely possible that Gates won't have a great year (and I say that with all the reluctance in the world as I spent an early 3rd rounder on him). Perhaps it was Brees making that happen.

And I'll need to see a lot more production (and maybe a Daniel Graham gets hit by a bus headline) before I put half the stock in Ben Watson as some people continue to do.

  :goodposting: Just looking at Gates' targets will tell you he is no longer to be ranked among the elite. Each week someone has a new hypothesis on why he underperformed and why next week it will get better. Now that 25% of the season is gone, people refuse to admit the trend will not get better.

Would the fact that Graham's questionable for this week's game change your projections for Watson??

25%... nice fuzzy math.... actually SD has only played 3 games... so that would be 18% of the season... seems much less now. Give it some time... teams will stuff LT2, and SD needs to be ready to make them pay... even Coach Marty can game plan that. That being said... I figured he'd be around 75% of last years numbers. Thusly, no desire to reach earlier as ppl have had for #1 TEs. A #5 TE, that I knew would never fall to me mid-to-late rounds, so why bother. However... if he's still struggling after a couple more weeks.... a good buy low?

Winslow is a stud nd will be no. 1 TE at years end. His knee is fine, he runs hard as hell ATC, and he is a huge red zone option. Now JoeyJ might bite a lil into the redzone TDs but for the main part Braylon and K2 are 1a and 1b on the list of receptions from Frye.

I also like LJ Smith, Gonzo, Heap and Shockey. In that order. If you have any of the top 3 there is no need in trying to upgrade, just be happy with what u got.

FWIW Im bout to trade Shockey, Jamal Lewis and Andre Johnson for K2 and Bush.
