The Baltimore Ravens have reached a one-year deal with free agent WR Drew Bennett. According to Ravens Insider, the deal is for the the veteran minimum salary. The salary for players seven to nine credited seasons is $745,000. Bennett also received interest from the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers recently.
Bennett, who turns 31 in late August, was originally signed by the Tennessee Titans as an undrafted free agent in 2001.
An eight-year NFL veteran, Bennett has posted 307 receptions for 4,412 yards and 28 touchdowns during his career. The 6-foot-5, 196-pounder has played in 102 games (58 starts).
“At this time of year, it’s good to be able to pick up a player who has been very productive in the league, and that includes against our defense,” general manager/executive vice president Ozzie Newsome stated. “Drew has been very competitive against us. We obviously liked his workout today. We wanted to make sure he was healthy and that he still had the things we’ve seen against us and on film. Drew’s situation is a lot like L.J. Smith, who we added earlier this offseason. Both are proven veterans coming off injuries, and they are looking for the opportunity to resurrect their careers.”
Bennett signed a six-year, $30 million free agent deal with the St. Louis Rams in March 2007, but wound up being a huge disappointment for the team and was released in late February of this year.
Bennett played with Tennessee for six seasons and spent the past two with the St. Louis Rams. Battling a foot injury in 2008, he played in one game for the Rams – and was inactive for seven others – before finishing the season on Injured Reserve. Bennett’s most productive year came in 2004 with the Titans when he totaled a career-high 80 catches for 1,247 yards and 11 touchdowns.
The Ravens, who have been looking for help at receiver ever since veteran WR Derrick Mason announced his retirement last week, worked out Bennett and veteran WR D.J. Hackett on Friday among the four receivers that were at the Ravens team complex. According to a league source, Mason has yet to file his retirement papers with the league office.
Despite signing Bennett, some league sources believe the Ravens still might revive their interest in veteran WR Anquan Boldin some time next month.
