Ravens trading for RB? (1 Viewer)

delusional

Footballguy
Listening to eagles live today and adam kapplin was on and reported that the ravens made a trade for a RB today? supposedly...nothing confirmed...any info out there from raven homers?

who's left on the block...pretty much just mcgahee that would considered a legitimate starter and someone I think balt would be interested in.

I could be wrong (mostly because of lewis being in balt so long) but I just figure that Balt would be looking at a bigger back like mcgahee.

Betts dynasty owner here who got his hopes up after hearing the rumor about going to the Jets. Does anyone think the Ravens would be a good fit for him?

I do

I agree. If it is indeed a TRADE and not a free agent signing, then I would put McGahee and Betts at the top of the list.

Nothing on Adam Caplan's blog or footballinjuries

Recent RB mentions were Dillon and Ravens but there'd be no trade there

I think they may sign Dillonfor a short term fix.
Lewis > Dillon, and it's not close.
You're kidding, right ?First of all Dillon can come much cheaper, and I don't see a huge difference here. Both have lots of miles on them.Jamal has obviously lost a step, and doesn't have the power nor staminato play 16 plus games any longer.
there's nothing wrong with Lewis' stamina. Why do you keep saying that? He's 27 years old for crying out loud.

Here's an article from the Baltimore Sun regarding the Ravens search for a RB

The Baltimore Sun

I thought Lewis had already signed, yet this article is dated for today.

Ravens widen backfield focus

Dillon, C. Brown in mix; team, Lewis continue talking

By Jamison Hensley

Sun reporter

Originally published March 6, 2007

Unable to strike a deal with Jamal Lewis over the weekend, the Ravens have expanded their free-agent running back search.

The Ravens contacted the agents for Corey Dillon and Chris Brown yesterday, although they are continuing to negotiate with Lewis.

It is still believed that the Ravens' preference is to re-sign Lewis, but they don't want to be left without an experienced running back in what has become a dwindling free-agent market.

"We continue to have conversations with Mitch [Frankel], Lewis' agent," Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome said. "But we're also talking with other running backs."

If the Ravens are unable to bring back Lewis, Dillon and Brown would both be happy to replace him.

Dillon's agent, Steve Feldman, said he had "cursory" talks with the Ravens yesterday.

Dillon, 32, was granted his release from the New England Patriots last Friday. He wants to go somewhere to be the featured back after splitting time last season with rookie Laurence Maroney.

In 2004, Dillon helped New England win the Super Bowl, rushing for a franchise-record 1,635 yards. His production dipped the past two seasons - 733 yards in 2005 and 812 yards last season - but he is still the top active runner in the NFL with 11,241 career yards in 10 seasons.

"I look forward to talking to them at more length," Feldman said. "Baltimore would obviously be our No. 1 choice."

Brown's agent, Wynn Silberman, expressed similar sentiments.

A third-round draft pick by the Tennessee Titans in 2003, Brown rushed for 1,067 yards in 2004 and 851 yards in 2005. But he lost his starting job to Travis Henry last season and had only 41 carries for 156 yards.

It is believed Brown, who turns 26 next month, would be part of the Ravens' contingency plan at running back if they're unable to get Lewis or Dillon.

"We're taking a strong look at Baltimore, and I think the chemistry with Steve McNair is something Baltimore is going to value," Silberman said.

Frankel, Lewis' agent, did not return phone calls yesterday. It is unknown whether Lewis has begun to look elsewhere while continuing to talk to the Ravens.

Lewis and Dillon are considered the top running backs available after Henry signed with the Denver Broncos (five years, $12 million in guaranteed money) and Ahman Green joined the Houston Texans (four-year, $23 million, including $6.5 million guaranteed).

Other running backs left in free agency include Dominic Rhodes (who seems headed to the New York Giants) and T.J. Duckett.

Another possibility is trading for the Buffalo Bills' Willis McGahee, but his price could be too steep for the salary-cap limited Ravens. Also, LaMont Jordan (Maryland) won't become a free agent after agreeing to reduce his roster bonus with the Oakland Raiders yesterday.

This is a small group considering the number of teams looking for a running back. The Raiders, Giants, Titans, Green Bay Packers and Cleveland Browns all could need another experienced back.

Unlike running back, Newsome said the team is done with outside linebackers in free agency after re-signing Jarret Johnson over the weekend. Contrary to reports, the Ravens announced Johnson's contract as a six-year deal.

"Jarret has been another guy that has been very productive for us in a lot of roles," Newsome said. "This allows him the opportunity now to become a solid starter for us."

That means the Ravens are no longer considering other linebackers, including former Steeler Joey Porter.

"Us getting Jarret back will now allow us to start to put our attention at other positions," Newsome said.

The Ravens also are not pursuing any free-agent offensive tackles. At this point, the Ravens are ready to go with former second-round pick Adam Terry as the replacement for right tackle Tony Pashos, but that isn't necessarily a lock.

"Could we draft a tackle? Sure," Newsome said. "But we feel like [Terry] would go in and do a creditable job for us."

The only other void in the starting lineup is at fullback. Newsome said the Ravens could address that position in free agency or the draft.

couldnt see SD trading to a team they may face in the playoffs.
I respectfully disagree here....1) They both have to make it to the playoffs....both are an injury away from coming back to the pack..2) If it upgrades your team significantly, you make the trade. The Chargers have lost a lot of talent (coaching and player) this year...3) It's a team game...one player should not be a worry for any team.

Lewis > Dillon, and it's not close.
Maybe, but I think it's close. Lewis looked terrible this year.
The age difference makes it not close.
Lewis looked terrible while having the age difference. So what does it matter?Neither of these guys will get anything beyond one year - I think Dillon could outperform Lewis this year. To say it's not even close because of DOB is putting way too much emphasis on age.

8 years in the league, 1800+ carries.Since the injury / jail days he has averaged 3.4 and 3.6 YPC.Before the injury / jail, he was consistantly averaging over 4 YPC.He is older than his years, and has shown me that he is onthe downslide of his career. His best days are definately behind him. He's sluiggish, and doesn't hit the holes with nearly the powerin which he did just a couple of years ago. I saw him play quites a bit last season, and I was, for the most part, unimpressed.

Considering that Lewis could have another big year in him because he is young, and Dillon has also slowed and is much older, makes me think that Lewis has more upside than Dillon.

He may be dancing too much for a big man, but there's nothing wrong with his stamina IMO.

?? Age difference ?How about 3.4 YPC for Lewis, and 4.1 YPC for Dillon in 2006.These are the REAL numbers you seemed to overlook.
Big difference in OL. It takes more than the RB to make that YPC look good. I agree that Lewis had a down year, but at his age, he could easily have another big year. Whereas Dillon doesn't have as greater chance of that considering his age.

Let's be realistic about what Betts numbers would be in Baltimore.

I think he'd get about 85% of what Lewis got during his best year.

So ~ 1930 total yards/12 TD's sounds about right. Lock for top 10 RB, most likely top 5.

Let's not forget that JL rushed 312 times, to Dillon's 199. And Baltimore didn't have a RB of Maroney's caliber to wear down defenses. Mike Anderson and Musa Smith aren't equal to one Maroney.

I was just getting ready to post that, good job. Anderson / Smith didn't even have half the carries of Maroney.

Agreed, but then again we just saw divisional rivals Pats and Dolphins trade Wes Welker.Of course, the Dolphins are more likely to face the 1st hole while the Pats are in the playoffs.
