Raw food diet for dogs (1 Viewer)

changed our dogs life

her fur is nicer

she has no digestive problems anymore

has more energy.

she is 12 and people think she is 5 the way she acts. Before we made the switch she had all sorts of problems

We did this also. Dogs really looked great. The real problem with it was the time it took to break down the raw food and portion it out.

Bump. Going to start transitioning from dry to raw over the next few weeks. Any good recommended books or online resources?

our stupid dog is allergic to basically everything. we have switched foods a couple times with no success yet. how much is this raw food diet going to cost?

We decided to do a bit of a mix with some raw and some not in the form of kibble. She goes through 5 chicken wings over the course of 2-3 days in addition to some dry.

Dated a woman who'd lived in Kenya for awhile, adopted a stay off the streets of Nairiobi, and brought it home with her.  She fed it raw bone-in chicken breast.

Based on this experience it's my opinion that raw food is a bad idea.  That ####### dog was scary.

Raw meat is a mess so we've used ZiwiPeak for almost 6 years now. Cheaper than the patties and much easier to deal with. We buy it from Amazon, Only Natural Pet or Chewies depending on who is the cheapest when we go to order.

It's going to cost more than garbage kibble, if that's what you're asking, but it's going to cost you less than 100 trips to the vet for meds/checkups when your wife/kids freak out that the dog's scratching themselves a little, or sniffling, or horked from the heat, etc, etc.

Our knucklehead had digestive issues as a puppy from Parvo at 11 weeks.  Vet recommended a bunch of absolute trash "specialty" foods/meds to help him to recover.  Poor guy did nothing but shoot brown water out of his a$$ for 3 days before I researched the raw stuff (and the prescription food....which was pretty much nothing but carbs).  Found a local supplier for his food and it was like a light switch was flipped.  Got back to his "fighting weight" within a few days and has never been sick since (going on 5 years old now).  Coat is great, teeth are great, lots of(too much) energy, no residual digestive issues, no horrible breath.  He's basically the boring picture of health for a 5 year old dog.

There can be more prep work involved, but it's a lot healthier for the pooch.  It should help a lot with the allergies/etc.  Dogs are supposed to eat protein, not a bunch of grain/carbs/meal (many dogs don't do well with gluten...because they're a freaking carnivore.  Go figure).  YMMV, of course, but it's been awesome for ours.  Won't ever feed a dog anything else again.

I wish there was a consensus on whether feeding bones is safe. Internet sites are around 50/50 on it. Seems like raw chicken bones are considered the safest if going that route.

I have good experience with stella and chewys......they have pre portioned patties that are frozen and you simply defrost.  be careful of cross contamination.  right now my new guy eats fresh pet, kind of an in between.  its not raw, but real fresh and soft and I have seen good things.

What treats do you give your dogs?  We haven't found any mass produced high quality treats, so maybe looking to go a different route.

we don't do a raw diet with our Weim, but feed him a pretty highly rated dry food. His coat is great and is pretty healthy for 9 years old.

...puppy pic added because he's my dude.

We make our own. Here's a good one...

 1 cup flour

1 T molasses

2 T powdered milk

2 tins sardines in water

Mix all ingredients until it comes together. Might need to add a couple extra T of flour. Shape into small balls using a scoop. Place on parchment lined cookie sheet and press each ball down with a fork. Bake @350 for 20-25 minutes. Store in airtight container once cooled.

The key is the size. Chicken wings, necks and feet are ideal. Chicken thigh bones are a little too dense and large and pose a choking hazard.

Stella & Chewie's is what we use most of the time. Four medallions at meals for our Vizla.

If it's a terrier you could just buy a few feeder rats every day and let them loose in an enclosed space for him.

Had 2 Boxers and did the raw food thing for a while.   They loved it and handled the bones no issues (used chicken only).  Did it for a year but stopped as the raw chicken handling and the dogs pulling it out of their bowls and getting it on the floor drove my wife nuts.

The craziest part though was their poop.  After a few days it would turn into white dust and basically disappear.   Just shows how efficient their digestive system is when given the right diet.

I've thought about it many times, and that's what ultimately stops me. My dog would drag that #### all over the damn house (including the couch). And we live in a townhouse, so tossing some chicken out in the yard (my preferred method) isn't an option. Trying to move, and will reconsider then. Luckily, he does well on upper middle class dry food.

Found this looking up info on Stella & Chewy’s but thanks for this 👍
