Ray Donovan- New Showtime series about a Hollywood "Fixer" (1 Viewer)

Pretty good assessment by GG. I want to like it and keep trying to, but it just isn't that captivating. Voight and Schreiber are good but the other characters, be it from lack of character development and/or poor acting, are not interesting and show no depth. A lot of them are being played like tired cliches. The Stuart character, his kids, his black brother, the gay hearthrob actor guy, the young rapper kid, the singer chick, Elliot Gould's partner...none of these chracters bring anything good to the table.

In a nutshell. The brothers are such a drag on the storyline. No wonder none of that was included in the previews. The wife is beyond annoying.

They could do so much with this premise, but it looks like the path they're going may not be for me. Too bad, I was excited.

I haven't gotten around to watch it. The concept just doesn't sound all that interesting. It seems like it would be a CBS procedural, only with the brand spanking new added twist that the protagonist is not really a great guy (and, aha!, they didn't call it "The Fixer", this is "Ray Donovan". No seeded bun either.).

I'm also a little leery when a new show stars a well-known movie star. I just assume they are looking to cash in on some name value. Though, it did work for "Homeland".

I know it doesn't make much sense to make a decision on a show with pretty much no information. I'll give it a look, at some point, for the Deadwood chick and the L-Word chick.

I like it ok. Pretty mindless action with over the top mobby Jon Voight. It makes me laugh quite a bit -- intended or not.

I like it

It's not great but it's good filler until Homeland, Boss, Game of Thrones or something comes out with another season.

Guess it's tough for a showrunner. Got to come out guns blazing or you get the axe. Show would be better served with more Liev Shcrieber doing what he does in Hollywood. Instead it's all cliche Irish-family stuff.

The two brothers could not be more uninteresting secondary characters.

Agreed on all accounts. I thought this would be Liev having to "fix" a Hollywood situation week after week. Instead we get creepy Jon Voight and Ray's two derp brothers as his opposition.

Boss was cancelled
Yeah, that ####### sucks with Breaking Bad and Dexter in their last seasons. Since I despise Homeland, it's pretty much Boardwalk Empire for me (honestly that might make the Good Wife my second favorite show :bag: ). That is why I am hoping this show turns the corner.

Why do you despise Homeland?

Needs more Liev, less everyone else. His secretary is probably the third best character. They should just kill off the brothers. They bring nothing.

I'm telling you guys, this show is hitting its stride. For those of you who bailed, I very much suggest going back to catch up.

His kid is pretty annoying/superfluous, but most TV kids are.

I loved this show from the beginning. Lots of great characters and we learn more about them each week (kind of like Banshee).

Two episodes in and I'm loving it. Is there a significant dropoff or is this just another case of over-critiquing by the acclaimed ffa tv critics?

The early episodes were underwhelming. There is no dropoff. It gets better.
I thought the pilot was quite good. Then there was a dropoff for five or six episodes. Then it gets better.

Oy vey.

And after that, make him a nice strawberry margarita before we put a bullet in his head!

I've actually been enjoying this show. Watched the first one, thought "meh" then started reading the thread and picked it back up. Thought the last episode was pretty good, but I don't get why Ray handed the money over without talking to Sully himself, or seeing the body in any way.

Other then leaving his mom to bang the black chick, what did Micky do that made Ray want to set him up? Has it really said? I must have missed how Ezra got involved in that in the first place, or is just because the movie star was his client?

In the last ep Ray was telling his son that Micky used to beat them black & blue if they lost in a boxing match to toughen them up. Said he had been wearing boxing gloves since before he could walk. That's about as specific as I think they've gotten. Ray is always talking about how he'll let you down too. Just sounds like your typical drunk and violent father.

Last ep ended with Kendra Morris' song Banshee, good tune:

Because it's about as realistic as Riddick.

Ray letting that money walk like that was ridiculous.

I like the baby at the end angle though. Jon Voight IS this show, the rest of the characters are uninteresting or rushed.

I think Ray blames Mickey for Ray's sister's suicide, too.
