No kidding.Burrel for 2 yrs $16 mil or Ibanez for 3 yrs $30 mil?Nice signing Rays!
Excellent signing by the Rays. However, you cant bash the Phillies for this deal compared to Ibanez. The Phillies offered Burrell $22 million for 2 years before he hit free agency. He turned it down. I'm sure the Phillies would have loved to have Pat Burrell at 2 yrs $16 million.Great signing by the Rays. Man, the AL East is LOADED. The Sox are in 3rd right now (on paper). No kidding.Burrel for 2 yrs $16 mil or Ibanez for 3 yrs $30 mil?Nice signing Rays!
I'm really surprised that 1-Burrell was only able to get a 2 year deal, and 2-was only able to get 8 million per year. He's only 32 years old, it's not like this is a 37 year old, marginal fielding, one 30 homer year, left fielder (raul ibanez :hiExcellent signing by the Rays. An offseason to recover from the wrist injury? I think you can expect him to bounce back.I find it hard to believe there's any favorite of these three, should be a good battle (before injuries), I don't think any team has the leg up on another.I do think the Rays and Yanks have made the Red Sox the third-place team on paper right now. But they're like cockroaches, I won't count them out. If Ortiz doesn't rebound it will be awfully difficult for them though.
How about that old and fat problem? Was that settled this off-season too?
Hadn't noticed much in the way of those specific problems with Papi before his wrist popped. Unless there are lingering effects (possible, some players take a year+ to fully recover from wrist injuries) I don't see any reason he can't bounce back. 33 years old isn't necessarily "old" either. I think expecting something along the lines of 305/415/600 in 550 AB's would be reasonable. His HR's may be down, but as 2007 showed he's just substituted his HR power for more doubles and less K's. Another 35 HR, 50 double season is probably in the cards...again, lingering wrist injury withstanding. How about that old and fat problem? Was that settled this off-season too?
Except that fat, unathletic guys with old man skills tend to age quickly (see Vaughn, Mo).Hadn't noticed much in the way of those specific problems with Papi before his wrist popped. This is pretty common for most former Rays. Not all, but quite a few like Josh Hamilton and Edwin Jackson.Anyone see the bomb he hit in Coors tonight? He's gotta have one of the sweetest right-handed swings ever. Why did he tank so bad in Tampa?
Because he came into the '09 season as a fat, out-of-shape, tub of crap.Raider Nation said:Anyone see the bomb he hit in Coors tonight? He's gotta have one of the sweetest right-handed swings ever. Why did he tank so bad in Tampa?
