RB Bucky Irving, TB (5 Viewers)

Buccaneers' Bucky Irving gets projected return date amid injury, off-the-field issues

Excerpt:

According to The Tampa Bay Times' Rick Stroud, the Buccaneers running back has "struggled emotionally" with being injured and away from the team and that has contributed to his absence.

"Bucky Irving struggled emotionally with being hurt and not on the field with his team for the first time in his career after suffering foot and shoulder injuries that has forced him to miss six games, the Tampa Bay Times confirmed," Stroud wrote.

"But mentally, Irving struggled with being injured and away from his team for the first time in his career. His personal support system has also been fractured by the loss of family members," Stroud added.

When it comes to Irving's expected return date, Stroud said he is expected to be ruled out this week, but Irving will "likely" play in Week 13.

"The Bucs are expected to rule Irving out of Sunday’s game against the Rams but it’s likely he plays next week when the Bucs hosts the Cardinals," Stroud wrote.

FOX Sports' Greg Auman reports that Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles will provide an update on Irving after practice on Friday but added that Irving is "in a good place" and is "close to a return to playing."

The news of Irving's off-the-field issue was first reported by Pro Football Talk's Mike Florio, although he didn't go into specifics about what the issue was exactly.

Irving returned to practice last week and has continued taking part this week, albeit in a limited fashion. Tampa Bay will drop its final injury report of the week on Friday, so we'll have exact confirmation on Irving's status then.

I wonder though if he struggled emotionally with being injured and away from the team.

Certainly sounds like he'll be back next week, now the question is, what is the workload? On one hand, TB has a pretty clear control your own destiny path (especially if SF beats Carolina. or TB beats LAR) so they may ease Bucky in and only give him 10-15 touches, rather than the 75% workload he was seeing pre-injury. On the other hand, Bucky didn't play with Wirfs (who is as big a difference maker as there is among OL) so his efficiency was lower than it would be now.

Bucky is probably the hardest player to rank coming back. If he was a top-8 RB I wouldn't be surprised at all. If he was more in the middling RB2 range, I also wouldn't be surprised.

anyone trying to trade Bucky?

I have mental health issues, so no judgement on him... as a person. But now I have concerns about him managing the stress of NFL

I interpret this as they avoided putting him on IR to allow participation in team activities, football being a catalyst that helped him through the mental illness.
If and when they activate him he is playing a full load. I trust that they deem him ready.
I don't think they are going to limit Bucky and tell him "Hey Bucky, because of risk of mental illness setback, we will limit you to 10 carries."

If he's back = full load.
If he's limited due to whatever it is, then he's not going to be active.

Buccaneers RB Bucky Irving, who has not played since Week 4 vs. the Eagles due to shoulder and foot injuries, is expected to make his return next Sunday vs. the Arizona Cardinals, per sources. Irving looked strong at practice this week and might have been able to play vs. the Rams, but the team decided to hold him out, give him one more week and have him return next Sunday.

considering how that game turned out im glad they waited a week! Now just hope Baker is ok or they'll just stack the line - AZ is a solid 1st game back

Wasn't there something weird when he got first got injured too? Like originally it was an ankle injury that was only going to be a couple of weeks, but suddenly there was a shoulder injury too that had never been mentioned before? I also recall he was tweeting some weird stuff (although people being dramatic on social media is hardly unique these days...)

Sorry what? Tweeting what weird stuff?

I'm not going to judge him for this. He's had a rough, rough upbringing. I read an article last year about him and one of the coaches and how Bucky would show up a early as 5:45 A.M. or so and they'd spend a half an hour hanging out and I thought that it was very cool but something sort of was just a touch off, you know? It was like Bucky . . (and how do I put this without anything but empathy and hope for the young man?) well, it was like Bucky, as much as the coach was totally so gracious that no matter how much he liked Bucky, you got the sense that maybe coach went to the office early for quietude or some sort of unmolested ritual and every morning, Bucky of the rough life and need for personal connection, but first and most importantly, Bucky, the genuinely good person who had undergone serious trauma, loss, and the subsequent indifference from people he knew in reaction to the typically average but shocking examples of these tragedies that he would later suffer personally; perhaps noting during his darker hours that others' indifference to these personal tragedies in his life was already haunting him around every corner of everywhere he went, so this coach that Bucky sought out was wise enough to place a buffer of some distance between the two of them while also realizing how important this grieving process and new friendship must be for this young man, so maybe kudos to coach for this. I don't know whether or not any of what I described was true or accurate; it was just a feeling I had. (I don't know about all you guys here under thirty-eight , but most of us knew somebody who we spent our time with that way—present and with a warily-leaden emotional armor on; not totally embracing all the things he needed form you, even though you definitely would almost rather die than clue them in that their earnest friendship with you was totally cool but you were very, very different, and you weren't totally as close as this person thought or how as close as they felt to you; and whether it was more important and justified for this person or for you to have the distance between you that you enforced —or whether you were possibly callous while in your own survival mode; regardless, you also cared deeply for this human and would stop his waves of trauma if you could—you really would stop it and tried to in ways large and small—but you had to live your own life and you didn't fake ****, so sometimes the moment he left your physical space you felt momentary relief.)

And so it's quite possible that feeling I had about this article is now colored by the tweets and his possible mental issues, but I remember reading the article and I haven't Googled it or anything. I think it was ESPN, but i honestly don't know the outlet, either. But hearing this news is sad and not surprising. I wish Bucky well.

Football is tough and our supports for prior or current trauma is lacking, and this coming from somebody who sort of hates the adoption of therapy for everything so there you go

One excellent use case for AI is as a tool to make prose more concise.

I think you know I'm a fan of yours but, I probably haven't read a full post of yours in the last six months. They just don't translate well to phone screens.

Snap count sounds like an issue- what lineup decisions are people making with Bucky this week?
2 leagues, starting him over Kareem Hunt in 1, sitting him for Javonte Williams in the other. I'm treating Irving as about RB20 this week. I also think the snap count is probably dependent on how he looks. If he comes out looking great, I think that snap count could disappear really quick, especially if Teddy (or hurt Baker, but more likely Teddy) is struggling.

The fresh legs at this stage of the season could make a real difference tbh. If he can get his usage back to where it was I think he’ll have a really good end to the year
