I've never seen a guy who had never done anything on the NFL level be so successfully deployed as a decoy. Bizarre is the right word. 

 
The video of SEVEN patriots all looking at and moving toward CMC and the other little rb walking in untouched from 35 on a screen is one of the wildest things I've ever seen. 

 
CMC will probably take a year or two to develop into a pro-bowler. He's a very young 21 years old and will only get better. Patience. 

 
Unless he grows 2 inches overnight and gains 5-10 pounds of muscle I don't know if he will become the top running back of this class that some people had high hopes for (including myself). This does not mean he is not talented, but as other people have mentioned, he looks so small on the field.

 
same hight and weighs more than jamal charles.  not that he'll be him, but c'mon..it's been four games with a not all there offense because cam was out and a veteran RB in front of him. patience

How many rookie RBs need time to develop? Usually you are either good right away or you're not. This seems like a silly excuse. He's looking like a burst of a pick for the Panthers and it sounds like people will keep making excuses for him. Great college rb and pedestrian nfl player.

Leveon and Shady to name two started slowly. I need to see more than 30 carries.

 
I got to watch most of his game yesterday. I'm no scout, but he doesn't look very special to me. Hope I'm wrong, small sample size, but he doesn't really stand out.

 
I'm loving how the tide of opinion is turning on CMC.

In the pre-season when the hype was boiling over and folks were saying he was going to be a sure fire Pro Bowler and the next Marshall Faulk I was one of the very few pointing out the glaringly obvious. He is a SMALL, COMPLEMENTARY back.

Honestly, it was like the Emperor's New Clothes.

"The Emperor is wearing magnificent garments of the finest silk!"

"No, he is not wearing any clothes."

"CMC is going to be amazing, his college career shows he can carry the load as a feature back!"

"No, he is a small, complementary back."

"They wouldn't have drafted CMC that high in the first unless they planned to make him the feature back!"

"No, he is a small, complementary back."

And btw the idea that he is 5'11 as listed is laughable. Look at him next to other players. He looks TINY. He looks Sproles-tiny or Cohen-tiny. Seriously, look at him, do you honestly, in your heart of hearts, believe he is 5'11?

I am not saying he is a bad player. But he is a small, complementary player, whose proper point of reference is other small, complementary players like Danny Woodhead and Tarik Cohen. That's not bad company, and he will be a perfectly respectable fantasy player in PPR leagues. He just won't be a feature back.

So what is it that you are angling for with this post?  Kick people when they are down?  Gloat about what a fantasy guru you are by saying "I told you so!"?  Have all of us say "sorry we doubted you, guru?"

posts like these aren't received very well in the shark pool.  There are a lot of people in here that burned 1.1 rookie picks on this kid in dyno leagues and are not happy about it.   Did you just come in here to run it in their faces that their player is underwhelming after 4 games into his career and how they should have listened to you?

if mccaffery explodes and becomes a top 10 fantasy scorer in the 2nd half of this season will you be back in here writing a huge diatribe about how we all tried to tell you he was the next Marshall Faulk but you wouldn't listen and you were wrong?

This Plus it's not unusual for an RB to add up to 10 pounds of muscle over a year of intense training. It's very possible when he's only 21 and his body is still filling out. CMAC strikes me as the kind of hyper dedicated and focused guy who would commit to that during the offseason.

Agree with that...still plenty of time...my main concern fantasywise is whether the team/QB is the best fit for his skill-set...

If you spent 1.1 on CMC, then I feel your pain. And I'm not trying to kick anyone when they're down. I was just struck previously by how incredulous and scornful the response was to my straightforward and politely-worded observation that CMC was a small, complementary back.

The draft capital the Panthers spent to get him suggests they view him more highly than that.

He’s saying that based upon the data of all of 4 games in a rookie’s season that it is proof positive that he’s the smartest guy in the room.

If McCaffrey’s results change and become more positive you can fully expect him to disappear.

If I could pick one Rookie running back that is dedicated and a hard worker who could turn it around it would be CMC.

No, if that happens I'll own my mistake. As opposed to not admitting it and clinging to the hope that it's still early, he's going to bulk up, they're not using him properly etc.

Exactly, you just need to trust what your eyes are telling you.

He looks like he's really small and can't run with power.

Maybe he actually is really small, and can't run with power.

Read the earlier discussion. I don't really want to make all the points I made then again, but in NFL terms a very good receiving/change of pace back who can return kicks is actually pretty valuable, so it's not surprising they spent a high pick on him. It's not the first time an NFL team has done it, either.

Well I'm not ready to make that admission. I need to see more than 4 games. Also, its clear the Panthers are content in utilizing JStew as the thunder to CMC's lightning and I don't blame him. I don't think any of us will 'know' anything definitively for a few years. Marshawn Lynch was essentially a bust until he discovered his inner beast mode in SEA. Some players are pro bowlers from game 1, others take time. I'm going to be patient with CMC and I advise other dynasty owners to do the same. I've seen enough good in his 4 games, so I'm going to continue to evaluate and watch him grow. He can learn for 2 full seasons and still only be 23 years old when he enters year 3.  There are 23 year old rookies now.

There isn't anything to do BUT hold and pray if you own him in dynasty.  You would be a fool to drop him or trade him low.   Only logical choice is hold and wait.  That's what NFL teams do too when they spend a high draft pick on a player that doesn't pan out RT away.  They give him much more leash than a low draft pick player or free agent acquisition with a nothing contract.  

Hold and pray.

His age is a really good point. 

I'd also say as mediocre and underwhelming as he has looked, he is still RB17 in my .5ppr return yardage league. 

Heck, I think if you redraft today, minus Cook injury, the top 3 is some combo of Fournette, Hunt, Cook, but you could still make a case between CMC and Davis at 4 in ppr. (Though frankly Watson might even be the play)

What other COP backs have been taken in the top half of the first round?

If all the Panthers wanted/needed was a COP back, then they could have selected any number of guys on day 3.

Spiller is one I suppose.  I remember FF owners pulled their hair out for years over how Buffalo used him.

I would push back against the notion that Bush was thought of as a COP guy when he was drafted.  I think it'd be more accurate to say he became one after he didn't develop into a feature guy.

But this is revisionist history. It the chicken and the egg argument.  Were they truely my drafted as COP RBs?  Or did they just fail as ever down backs and end up as COP RBs?  I'd argue when they were drafted that they were expected to be every down backs but they just didn't make it. So the teams made the best of it and turned them into COP backs.

The Saints drafted Reggie Bush #2 overall to be the next Barry Sanders, not the next Darren Sproles.

Maybe, though they never really ran the experiment to see if he could be that. He split time with Deuce out of the gates and never had more than 150 carries for the Saints. Then he moved on and immediately got 216, 227, 223 in three consecutive years in Miami and Detroit, both of whom used him as the clear lead back that the Saints were unwilling to.
