Don't know about you, but I draft TOMORROW and I've got the 5th pick overall (URGH!!!). If Barber falls -- fine, but I don't think he will. Just stumbled across this article:

http://www.footballdocs.com/Clinton_Portis.html

No real breaking news to FBG, but I did like the financial advisor analogy. That clicked with me.

PLEASE post any relevant articles to Portis you may find beyond just he has injured his shoulder. I would like to get all the info / takes I can prior to making my decision to draft tomorrow.

Would Ronnie Brown be just TOO crazy at #5? I don't care for Rudi, Jackson nicked up and new coach, Edge's offensive line a mess, and Jordan's team is just a mess... I love Brown's upside.... but I also got burned on Kevin Jones last year and want to make sure I am not going to go down that road again. He crushed my team. Thanks in advance.

There are other Portis threads here, but you need to consider LaMont, Ronnie, Caddy and Steven Jackson now.

I am in the same boat -- drafting #5 this weekend (no PPR). And I am also leaning towards, with GREAT trepidation, Ronnie Brown. Please, someone, talk me down!

Why?

Brown has the size and skills to be the man.

Brown can catch.

Brown has an easy schedule.

Brown's offense probably improved from last year w. addition of a better QB.

Brown has the pedigree (He's like this year's #2 pick, Reggie Bush, year two, after Deuce is gone.)

Brown's O-line has good depth and is improving.

Brown is his own short yardage back.

SJax:

* Dangerously aging O-line. Sjax is playing behind two 35+ year old linemen. That worries me to tears. This o-line is on the decline.

Caddy:

* Small Size: A little on the small side for an everydown back going through the middle. Probably won't get 25-30 touches a game again because, as we saw last year, he will break.

* Not in Passing Game: Can't catch. Dropped two easy balls last week on TV. That keeps him off the field on 3rd down.

* Tough Schedule.

* TD vulture in Pittman.

Rudy: (BTW, I peersonally love Rudi. Won two years in a row with him as my #2RB.)

* Can't Catch. I think he'll repeat his numbers from last year and the year before, but no upside. And those numbers aren't worth #5.

Edge

* plays in Arizona.

Someone, talk to me! Make me believe again in Clinton Portis!

draftsharks called ihm a Bust two months ago, I believe they're right. !! He's got a bulls-eye on his shoulder. Trade him now while you can get something

Take him with the 5th pick and take Betts in Rd 7. You'll be fine. The big concern is potential for RBBC. But that's the risk you have to take if you want him.Upside is the 2nd half of Priest's first year as a Chief. Look up the game logs. If CP is healthy, that is what you could have come the stretch run. That makes the pick oh so tough amigo. Have confidence in your ability to field a competitive team early. Unless you're in a total points league, this game is all about the stretch run.

I think he was talking about Portis (shoulder comment). This is beginning more and more to look like the year of the receiver. There are now a full four backs who are absolutel locks to be deserving of a first-round picks. IMHO, after the revised big four it goes

Edge

Rudi

Portis

Caddy

Ronnie

of course, Edge lost Oliver Ross for the season and I really know nothing about his replacement. Don't underestimate the strength of the Cards' passing game and the opportunities it will provide the running game. Plus, Edge is the only proven back outside of the top 4 that can catch passes other than LaMont (not exactly proven) and Westy (injured already).

OK -- Edge should not be anywhere in consideration here. Horrible oline. Horrible. Horrible. Not much room to operature when 7 left virtually unblocked running at you in the backfield. Extra abuse too. Added injury risk on top of decreased numbers.

Thanks to all for your comments. Especially LawFritz. Geese. I am in turmoil. I was so excited about Porits, and now damaged goods. Byron_nyc --- glad to hear you are thinking the EXACT same thing in same situation. Misery enjoys company.

I was set to go with Brown, but now I am disgusted with the idea someone later will get Portis and it could haunt me.

As for Brown, this is what I was able to dig up:

Off. Coord MM (can't spell) will run and may use gadget plays instead of TDs for Brown. Used Famous Amos as good reception back back in day with Bus, but Famous was a 3rd down back and you would expect that to be true. Do we see 3rd down back in Miami stealing Brown's receptions and PT??

Love fact Brown is healthy, young, and a super stud at Auburn. Ready to bust out, but again, gvies me 2005 Kevin Jones twitches. Good system too on the rise. Great strength of schedule. But again, how much does MM hurt (help) things?

Still in turmoil. Maalox on order. Thanks again to all for your thoughts. Value them all.

#5 pick guys, I keep getting stuck with it. I keep taking Edge. I'm not gonna try and break it down but he's just got the experience and is more of a receiving threat than the other choices at #5 IMO. Oh and Tiki his age worries me that early and Brandon Jacobs has looked fierce.

FWIW I seriously considerred Peyton. At one point I felt he was more of a lock to be a stud than any RB I'd get at #5 and he has an enormously high ceiling which of course I wanted out of my first round pick. I know it was a reach but I was close. I hated their line and RB blocking in preseason game and that was the straw that broke the camel's back for me with that non-injury string and bad blocking.....couldn't do it. Silly but that's what I thought

BTW never found a taker in any draft to trade down.

That is an important point:

I tried to trade down and nobody wanted it. Well, I'm taking the plunge and grabbing Portis. Hopefully this won't be the start of a very long year. Double fisting Maalox all day.

Drafting sunday at 1.06.

I hope that someone takes Portis ahead of me.

I'm pretty sure that Barber will go 1.04.

I will avoid Edge - AZ is bad news for RBs

Not excited about Rudi's upside.

Boils down to Portis vs. Ronnie Brown vs. SJackson.

I've been leaning towards Jackson, but I really expect Miami to be a 10 or 11 win team and Brown should be well positioned to have a great year.

Still undecided.

I think that I will pass on Portis and also grab Torry Holt at 2.07.

fwiw - 14teamer - ppr - the first 8 picks went: lj,sa,lt,tiki,sj,caddy,cp,rb.

I was sitting 8 and happy to take rb there and not have the portis decision - g'luck 2 day

I'm worried about Ronnie Brown being pulled on 3rd downs and lack of goaline TD's. I love his O-Line coach and easy schedule. But he didn't even hold up while splitting carries last year. Can he carry the load? Do I want to risk my 1st rounder on this high risk/reward player? Not sure.

S. Jackson's achilles problem concerns me.

Lamont Jordan -- not sold on him because of Oakland and less pass receptions. I'm in a half PPR league.

I was down on Edge because of Arizona's O-line, but I can see him catching swing passes from Warner. Even if Leinert comes in with Warner going down, I could still see Edge getting yardage through air and ground. Do I think his YPC is going down, yes. But Boldin and Fitz will keep people from stacking the line. Indy's run blocking wasn't that spectacular either. Yes, yes, Arizona's oline sucks and they lost a big starter. I just think Edge is a good foundation to build the rest of my team around. With so many question marks this year, he seems like a "safer" bet then the rest.

Rudi is consistent/safe, but in a PPR, he's not that great.

That being said, with all the question marks after the top 4, I'm also considering Manning. It'd be tough since I'm typically the last one to draft QB's in my league. I doubt I will.

Sounds like a lot of us are in the same boat. I draft today, and sit in the 4 spot.

I have been leaning towards Tiki, only because I feel like he's the safe choice. I would not take Brown at this point, unproven for my tastes. I have considered SJax and Portis is still an option.

For me it comes down to risk and how much of it I'm willing to take on. I'm thinking that I can grab Barber and get a Stud WR in round 2. Then go best available RB in round 3. It's not the sexiest pick, but I want to win FF games, and I think that Tiki give mes the best chance.

PS-I'm a huge Portis fan and it really pains me to pass on him, but I have to think with my head and not my heart.

Two nights ago I sat at #4 and had a very tough time time passing on Portis. I took Barber and watched CP fall all the way to #12  I tried to trade down but nobody wants this pick right now.

i have 4 right now and draft next week... i'm in a legue with some newbies. i'm actually thinking Manning... i've never gone qb anywhere before 6 or 7th round but i might roll the dice with this one in hopes of some more poor picking and getting better value later. its not ppr

The sky is falling, the sky is falling! All of you guys are making me laugh. The panic button has definitely been pushed at this forum, when just two weeks before many people were trying to make a case that CP should be considered into the Big 3?

If you choose the likes of SJax, Ronnie, Lamont over CP you will be very sorry. I'm not even sure I'm sold on the idea that Tiki is now the lock at #4. Did you see Jacobs in pre-season? I think he will be a little more involved than just a Goal Line back this season. And the very idea of burning a 7th round pick on Ladell Betts to handcuff to CP is rediculous.

I would take Tiki #4, but then you have to take Portis after that. His injury will pop out from time to time and he will be in pain, but he should be able to play with it. Betts is a must have, but I think Clinton in an Al Saunders offense has way too much upside even with a bum shoulder. When he was healthy he had Tiki by a mile and I considered the RBs as the big three the big #2 and then Tiki. Now it is Tiki then Portis (And I think I will regret taking Tiki).

Go Portis #5. You suffer too much of a drop off if you don't.
