RB Portis Says He Is Game-Time Decision

Howard Bryant, Washington Post - [Full Article]

Redskins HC Joe Gibbs said yesterday that RB Clinton Portis's status for tomorrow's game would be downgraded to doubtful. But for the second consecutive week, Gibbs and Portis did not communicate the same message about his health. "I can't do anything but tell you to wait until Sunday," Portis said. "We've seen some miracle days happen. This isn't a situation for me not to be playing." Yesterday, Gibbs said because Portis didn't practice this week, he likely would not play in Dallas. But Portis said his practice schedule this week was no different than last. Portis said "I don't make the decisions around here. The best way to say it is that I'm a game-time decision.

Another very important divisional game. Is Gibbs blowing smoke?

I have asked this before and never gotten a answer, but does it really through off the opposing teams preperation if a player goes from questionable to doubtful? What i mean is, if Gibbs is really blowing smoke, do you think it affects how Parcells prepares?

According to this story on NFL.com he's not playing.

Gibbs: Portis will not play against Cowboys

NFL.com wire reports

ASHBURN, Va. (AP) - Washington Redskins coach Joe Gibbs ruled Clinton Portis out for the game against the Dallas Cowboys, an announcement that surprised Portis and created yet another bizarre twist in the running back's injury saga.

"He didn't practice today. ... If a guy doesn't practice, he's not going to play," Gibbs said.

Gibbs said Ladell Betts, T.J. Duckett and Rock Cartwright will be the running backs against the Cowboys. Portis was downgraded from questionable to doubtful on the injury report, with Gibbs citing soreness from the pounding Portis took from playing in the season opener against Minnesota on Monday night.

"It's really just because of soreness," Gibbs said.

"Actually, it's in a different spot in his shoulder. He's got some soreness there that lingered and kept him from practicing this week."

When told what Gibbs had said, Portis was taken back.

"I didn't know the decision had been made," Portis said. "I thought it was a game-time decision. As of now, my bag's packed and ready to go to Dallas, unless they come and tap me on the shoulder in the near future and tell me I ain't going."

Last week, the story was just the opposite. Portis spent several days downplaying his chances to make the season opener, saying he was not in football shape and had yet to recover from a partially dislocated left shoulder that cause him to miss nearly all of preseason. Gibbs then sprung a surprise after the final practice, saying that Portis had tested the shoulder sufficiently and would play as a backup to Betts.

Portis carried 10 times for 39 yards in the 19-16 loss to the Vikings, but he has complained of soreness all week.

"I can't do nothing but tell you to wait until Sunday. This bag is going to Dallas," said Portis, pointing at the equipment bag in front of his locker. "We have seen some miracle days happen. This ain't no situation for me not to be playing in."

As usual, Portis wavered from serious to playful, making it difficult to discern whether he really feels that he can play. At one point, he said: "I eat gunpowder twice a day now. As long as I'm on this gunpowder, I think I'm going to be all right."

Portis took a more serious tone when he expressed frustration over the week-to-week soap opera that his injury has become.

"I'll be happy when I'm healthy," Portis said. "Hopefully we can get this over with real soon and I can join my teammates and be on the field and it's not an issue. I don't like this being an issue going into the weekend. Am I up or down? Playing or not? Whatever's best for the team."

Portis wore pads and said he "ran a few routes" during practice, but that apparently wasn't enough for the coach.

"He'll probably tell me he can play on game day, but he didn't practice so we'll move him down accordingly," Gibbs said. "Hopefully he's going to be back next week, That would be my hope."

Portis did make the trip to Dallas with the team, but I've seen no updates about how much he will play.

Thought so.
Here's what I posted yesterday after actually listening to the 2 minute interview/presser that Gibbs gave after practice on Friday:
Ok, I just listened to Gibbs' comments verbatim per the video posted on the Redskins.com website, and I'm struck by how they differ from "Portis is out". Here's what he said:

"Probably what everybody will ask about is Clinton. He didn't practice today and so we'll probably downgrade him. It's really just because of soreness, he hasn't been able to get the soreness out. It's actually in a different spot in his shoulder, so I think it's just an issue of he had some soreness linger that kept him from practicing this week so we'll downgrade him."

[in response to a question about whether he'd (therefore) leave Portis out (of the lineup) this weekend.]

"Well, you know, if a guy doesn't practice he's not going to play, so we'll downgrade him. I would say that he'd probably tell me he can play on gameday (chuckling), but he didn't practice, so we'll grade him down accordingly."

[Asked about Ladell Betts being Portis' replacement]

"Yeah, Ladell, TJ and Rock will be our group."

[Asked whether it's a disappointment to not have "him" for such a big game.]

"Yeah, anytime you're obviously missing players- obviously we're missing Priolieu. Certainly Clinton means a lot to our team, he's one of our leaders, but it's tough. You've just got to realize that what I'm thankful of is that it's not going to be something- it'll be something- hopefully he's going to be back next week, so that would be my hope."

[He was asked questions about other players over the course of 20 more seconds, the last question being "Is Shawn Springs out?"]

"Yeah, Shawn's out."

I have to say that I think this is deception, pure and simple. When he spoke of not practicing means you don't play, he spoke generally and not about Clinton. The only things he said about Clinton directly were:

1) He didn't practice during the week because of lingering soreness (in a different spot on the shoulder);

2) they would downgrade him (which they did, to "Doubtful");

3) he means a lot to the team;

4) hopefully they'll have him for next week's game.

Notably, when asked a direct question about Shawn Springs being "out", he stated unequivocally, "Yeah, Shawn's out." He never did that with Clinton., and in fact he seemed to deflect the question to Pierson Priolieu who everyone already knows is lost for the season.

I don't have Clinton on my rosters so it's not my risk, but I think he's going to play. Now, how much he plays and how effectively is anyone's guess, but that's my read.

EDIT to add: my read on Gibbs' modus operandi when speaking to the press is 1) they are the enemy given how precious accurate information is in today's ultra-competitive NFL, 2) he rarely comes out and says something clearly if he can avoid it, the only exceptions being obvious facts or harmless facts, or perhaps things compelled by league policy (e.g. Springs being out); and 3) his personal ethics steer him away from deception through outright lying, meaning that instead of saying one thing and intending another he'll instead deflect or reframe a question that puts him on the spot.

If he doesn't start, who will get the start and the bulk of the carries?
If Portis plays and starts, he'd get the majority of them.If Portis plays but doesn't get the start, Betts would start but I'd bet Portis would get more carries. If Portis doesn't play, Betts would start and would likely get the majority of the carries. And frankly, I'd bet on the Redskins to abandon the run at some point in the game, rightly or wrongly.

I think Betts' role stays the same regardless of Portis' status. I think they may try to "surprise" Dallas by using TJ Duckett more in this game, because there's virtually no video on him in this offense and his running style is entirely different from that of Betts or Portis. I still think Portis is playing, but that they'll limit his work to more or less the 10 carries he had last week. Just a hunch, but I'm going with it.

OK, I'll differ with you on this one. Portis got more carries than Betts last week, and one less reception. I don't think he was limited so much as their rushing game was limited. I think if he plays he gets the majority of the carries; whether that's 10 or 20 will depend on how often they rush more than on a limit placed on him.I don't see Duckett getting more than 3-5 carries yet. Too new to the system, too many chances for a bad handoff, etc.

They never gave up on the run in the Minny game. That game was competitive and even if you eliminate those lateral passes to the WR's they were averaging just under 4 yards per carry against a very solid front 7 on that Minny defense. As for Duckett, he's been on the team for 6 weeks now. He's a veteran and Brunell's a veteran. I just don't see them as being too raw to play. He may not know the whole playbook, but he's got to know enough to be able to play certain pacakages. The lack of game film works to his advantage here because even if his knowledge of the playbook is so limited that his appearance in the game would otherwise lead to predictability, you can't at this point predict what you haven't seen before.

This blows..If I bench Portis, I need to play Jordan..Jordan plays at noon. Obviously I'd rather have Portis, but can't wait past noon for this to play out... :(

At what time does Washington have to submit its inactive list for tonight's game?
i believe inactives are declared 1 hr before gametime. i've never actually seen it as a rule though.

I started him too, over Jordan. Screw it, I"m taking a shot. I also believe the Skins can't go 0-2 and will play him if he can go at all..

This quote, taken from the Redskins website...tells me he's playing. He didn't have any setbacks, played full tilt last week, and is only experiencing soreness from getting hit on it...like any RB would.

"We're working on strengthening it and getting it as strong as we possibly can," Portis said. "Right now there is soreness there, but that could be because I haven't been hit in three or four weeks."

Portis said he was not hampered by the shoulder during Monday's game.

"I felt like I could be myself," he said. "Coach [Joe Gibbs] stressed that, too. That was his main concern. He wanted me to go out and play like I play. If I couldn't, then I shouldn't be on the field.

"I told him, 'If I suit up, that's the only way I know how to play.' I don't know how to try to play safe. I can't tell somebody, 'Hey bro, don't run into me on the field.' If I do that, they're going to try to blast me."

I'm pulling out Tatum and playing Portis.

Vanderjagt active for Cowboys home opener, Portis out for Redskins

September 17, 2006

IRVING, Texas (AP) -- Mike Vanderjagt was active for the Dallas Cowboys' home opener Sunday night against Washington, while the Redskins were without running back Clinton Portis.

Vanderjagt, the NFL's most accurate field goal kicker, was signed during the offseason to solve the Cowboys' kicking woes. He was inactive for the season opener even though coach Bill Parcells said the kicker wasn't still bothered by a lingering groin injury.

Shaun Suisham, 1-for-2 in field goals last week against Jacksonville, was also active for the Cowboys to handle kickoffs.

Because Parcells had to use two spots for kickers, receiver/kick returner Jamaica Rector was inactive. After being a healthy scratch for the opener, linebacker Bobby Carpenter, the Cowboys' first-round pick in April, was active.

Portis has a sore shoulder after unexpectedly playing in the season opener. He carried 10 times for 39 yards against Minnesota despite downplaying the chances of playing in that game while recovering from a partially dislocated left shoulder in the preseason.

Also inactive for Washington was Shawn Springs (abdomen), the cornerback who was playing for Seattle when he was beaten by Terrell Owens for a touchdown. That was when Owens pulled a Sharpie out of his sock, signed the football and handed it to a financial adviser the players shared.
