RB Dillon: "I'm healthy, I'm ready"

Source: Mike Reiss, The Boston Globe

Original Article: http://www.boston.com/sports/football/patr...highlights.html

Summary: Running back Corey Dillon had this to say following Thursday's practice: "I'm healthy, I'm ready. To be honest with you, this is the best I've felt, at this time, in the last three years. So I feel good about where I'm at, but I'm still not close to where I want to be. Hopefully, by training camp I'm going to be ready to go."

Personal view: If Dillon is truly healthy and ready for training camp, he may put a serious dent into Maroney's playing-time this year.

 I think you have that backwards. I'd be amazed if Moroney enters the season as the starter over Dillon. I think it will be Moroney putting a dent into Dillon's playing time, not vice versa. But that's probably all semantics. For what it's worth, Dillon and the Patriots were saying the same thing last season at this time, when Dillon showed up to camp faster and stronger than he had in '04.

I think you're both saying the same thing. Dillon is the starter but he'll keep Maroney off the field and put a dent in what playing time Maroney would see if he's truly healthy and ready. Thanks Punchie.

My wording was a bit akward, sorry. There's been a lot of love for Maroney lately, and I'm just saying that every bit of good news I hear about Dillon counts as bad for Maroney.

More quote from Dillon after today's practice:

Running back Corey Dillon pulled a biography of his career accomplishments out of his pocket after Thursday’s practice and had a reporter read them aloud. He spoke with passion when asked if he felt he was fighting for a job. “Fighting for a job?” Dillon said. “Do you want to read my bio again? I’ve been in this league for 10 years. It’s an honor being in the league for 10 years. There aren’t too many people who have been where I’m going. I’m proud about it.”

So...he's being humble and arrogant at the same time?

Oh yeah . . . he can hear the footsteps.

While I think the job is Dillon's to lose, I could definitely see him lose it, especially if he got hurt and missed a few games. Just ask Drew Bledsoe what 10 years in the league gets you.

Does Dallas need a RB, too? Just kidding. I think your point is spot on. This league is not about tenure. It is "what have you done for me yesterday?"

Prediction: Dillon keeps the job all year, puts up 1100+ yds and 10 TDs. Maroney tallies about 400 yds and 3 TDs in limited time.

If this were to happen without any injuries involved, the team would still be short about 600 rushing yards for a team total that they would be shooting at (compare, say, to 2004). That's fine if you think the other RB on the team will get that much, but I'm a bit curious as to whether Patrick Pass and Kevin Faulk would get close to that amount of rushing yards.

yes he has hired a personal trainer this off season and has been working harder than ever..is playing with two chips on his shoulder now and is VALUE in any draft going on.

I don't think they'll hit 2004 numbers -- Faulk and Pass may combine for 300-400 total or so.

In a redraft league this year, I wouldn't have a problem drafting Dillon. Injuries and how much Maroney will take away IS a concern, but he's still a potential 1200+ yard/10+ TD guy, who many have forgotten (even moreso with Maroney drafted), and could be a steal in drafts...

Heck, Stephen Davis helped carry me to a title after he slipped to Rd 9 in my redraft. Dillon obviously should not fall that far, but I'm more than happy to snatch him up at the right place if people let age and Maroney concerns negatively influence his draft position too drastically. He put up 10 rushing TDs last year in very limited action.

What does "im healthy, im ready" mean if by training camp he'll hopefully be ready to go? I think I'll just wait till someone actually hits him in training camp, before I believe he's ready to take a seasons worth of punishment.

Ok Dillon, I love ya bud but you're the "best you've ever felt?" What vet hasn't said this in June.

It's still somewhat unclear to me why Corey Dillon has dropped so low in the rankings.

Yes, he's gotten older, and yes, he was dinged up last year.

But I'm not convinced that Dillon has lost it. I think a lot of the Pats were off last year - Dillon included.

I think he has at least one more good season in him.

Is that so crazy?

12 rushing tds, 1 rec

Yeah, it's weird how downgraded Dillon has become.

I mean, the guy, while being fairly dinged up all season, still managed to crank out some solid numbers. He just happened to be hurt off and on.

Dillon is clearly not what he was. But if this guy can be had after the 20th RB, he seems like a ridiculous steal.

this is watters-alexander all over again...question is, does belichick have the same loyalty to dillon that holmgren had to watters?

plus i think watters was playing at a higher level then than dillon is now.

should be interesting...coach has shown he'll go with the young guy before (brady).

I just got back from Pats camp today, and the main impression I left with is that Maroney is all that and then some. Big, strong, and FAST on the off-tackle drills I saw up close.

I'd be looking over my shoulder if I were Dillon, too.

Brady only got a shot when Bledsoe got hurt . . . it wasn't like he put in Brady when Bledsoe was healthy. (Meaning that had Bledsoe hadn't gotten hurt, Brady wouldn't have gotten in the lineup.)

I have heard a few Pats fans say that Belichick was on the verge of yanking Bledsoe back in '01 anyway and putting Brady in, but that is pretty easy to say, since we'll never know.

It has been confirmed in Michael Holley's book "Patriot Reign." BB really disliked Bledsoe's game which is one reason he had no problem dealing him within the division. Brady was lighting it up in practice and BB loved his leadership abilities. The injury made it easier because it avoided controversy but an ineffective Bledsoe was heading to the bench right about the time of the injury.

Every good bit of news I hear about Dillon pushes Maroneys ADP down. I like that

Ah, okay. I was not aware of that. Cool. :)

SHHHHH :censored:

Im praying I can snag him in 6.

No one is rooting harder for Dillon than me. An effective Dillon combined with Maroney's young legs is nothing but a huge positive for the Pats. That being said what many don't realize is Dillon looked awful prior to his injuries (as well as the O line injuries). He was nothing like the RB he was in 04. He was going down easy and couldn't get around the corner. The violent running style of 04 was MIA. Whether there was an undisclosed injury, he hit the age wall or got lazy after his new contract is unknown. The word is he worked his butt off this offseason (he looked absolutely jacked the other day with his shirt off) and is on a mission. Yet, I still need to see him in live action to believe it. He's definetly talking the big game so hopefully he can back it up.

Whether Dillon reverts back to form or not Maroney will be a piece of the puzzle this season. BB is really digging him and he always finds time for guys who can produce whether they're veterans or rookies. Maroney will get his share of carries...how much will depend on what Dillon shows up...the 04 or the 05 model.
