The Atlanta Falcons, after reportedly fielding several offers for T.J. Duckett, are holding on to the 6-foot, 254-pound battering ram of a running back known as "The Diesel."
At least for the time being.
The Falcons may be more willing to move Duckett, a first-round pick out of Michigan State in 2002, once they get a look at third-round pick Jerious Norwood, a running back from Mississippi State, in their mini-camp. Should Norwood give indications he can complement Warrick Dunn in 2006, Atlanta's asking price for Duckett could come down.
The Steelers were one of the teams that made an offer for Duckett on Sunday.
They wound up drafting Virginia Tech running back Cedric Humes (6-1, 233) in the seventh round (240th overall) after proving unable to pry Duckett from Atlanta.
Although powerful in style and difficult to bring down, Duckett has had a hard time staying healthy in Atlanta.
He's appeared in 16 regular-season games just once in his four seasons with the Falcons and is coming off his least productive NFL campaign. Duckett carried 121 times for 380 yards (a 3.1 average) in 14 games in 2005, but he still managed to score eight rushing TDs. Overall he's carried 552 times for 2,175 yards (a 3.9 average) and 31 touchdowns.
Duckett scored 11 rushing touchdowns in 2003 and eight in 2004.
He has one year remaining on his contract and is due $663,000 in 2006.
The Steelers would seemingly be interested in Duckett as a short-yardage and goal-line complement to running back Willie Parker.
"We'll continue to keep our options open," coach Bill Cowher said Sunday, when asked if he wanted to acquire a veteran running back before training camp. "But I feel good about the players we have."
