RB Jordan Howard , NO (1 Viewer)

I like Howard and feel he gets under rated a lot. He doesn't fit well if you want to throw him the ball in the current pass happy NFL but he is a very good runner. I don't see a lot of Bears games but when I did see him he was far from a natural pass catcher. I think he can do well in Philly.

I see Howard as getting the majority of the carries this year as Sanders gets acclimated.  And depending on Sanders ability to pass block, Howard could stay on the field more than expected this year.

Howard is what the Eagles didn't have last year - a workhorse back that can take (and give) a beating between the tackles. He is the easy choice for short yardage packages IMO.

It's really tough to value these guys from a fantasy perspective right now.  This should leave every other eagles RB undraftable, but I'm interested to see where their ADP's land come August.

I'm going to have to decide whether i should drop this guy.  If i keep him it costs me a 5th round pick

Leaning towards dropping him

With the Eagles penchant for RBBC, its hard to argue Howard as more than a flex play, without someone else getting injured. Probably in the RB 35-45 range for me. I'd bet on Sanders being the guy to own there from the start of the season on,  but Howard will be involved enough to likely prevent Sanders from being anything more than a low-end RB2.

Eagles OC Mike Groh said Jordan Howard has "caught the ball" so far during the offseason program.

Howard struggled with drops over the first two years of his career, but he was not charged with any last season, improvement he attributes to diligent work off the field. "I think he’s worked hard at it and doesn’t fight the ball," Groh said, "and we just have to keep throwing him balls." As Groh hints, Howard expects more chances to show off his improved hands in Philly, although the addition of second-rounder Miles Sanders likely will eat into those chances.

The Philly Voice's Jimmy Kempski believes Jordan Howard will get the "lion's share" of the Eagles' short-yardage work.

Kempski also expects Howard to be the closer in the second half. While the Eagles have talked up Howard's ability as a receiver so far this offseason, it makes much more sense for him to fill this kind of role in Philly's backfield. Fantasy players would rather see second rounder Miles Sanders emerge as the clear lead back, but it is likely Howard will get his fair share of carries this season.

94 WIP's Eliot Shorr-Parks reports Jordan Howard has been "dominating" carries with the first-team offense at Eagles camp.

The Philly Inquirer's Jeff McLane passes along similar observations and "guesses" Howard will lead the Eagles in rushing attempts this season, with Miles Sanders "getting a smell here or there" on early downs. McLane also expects Darren Sproles and/or Corey Clement to dominate the pass-game reps. Committee approaches have been the Eagles' preference under coach Doug Pederson, so this isn't all that surprising to hear. Sanders and Howard are currently both being drafted as back-end RB3's in fantasy, coming off the board in the middle rounds.

Day 4 observations

Jordan Howard had a drop on one play and on another, his timing coming out of the backfield seemed slightly off. He’s a guy who hasn’t caught too many passes in his career and it’s definitely not his strength. There were some moments in OTAs where he looked smooth as a receiver, but there have now been some plays that have me questioning that in camp. He doesn’t have to turn into LaDainian Tomlinson, but it would be nice to see him at least offer some threat as a receiver out of the backfield.
Go figure

Speaking Monday, Eagles OC Mike Groh praised Jordan Howard's work in the passing game, particularly his pass protection.

"He’s been all over his protection," Groh said. Second-round rookie Miles Sanders has been earning steady hype, but Howard has been doing what he needs to do to remain a part of the Eagles' committee. There is still a long time between now and Week 1, but it certainly appears both Howard and Sanders will be involved against the Redskins, likely rendering both players FLEX options in fantasy.

Excerpt:

PHILADELPHIA EAGLES: Howard hyped for 2019. Since 2016, only Ezekiel Elliott (4,048) and Todd Gurley (3,441) have accumulated more rushing yards than Jordan Howard (3,370), who spent the previous three years with the Chicago Bears. Howard was traded to the Eagles this offseason, and now he finds himself in a position to maybe find the greatest success of his NFL career.

"I feel like this is one of the best O-lines in the league, if not the best O-line in the NFL," Howard told me in the end zone of Lincoln Financial Field. "You know those guys are rock solid, and they're going to get it done every play."

Philadelphia's offensive line is ranked No. 1 in the NFL heading into the 2019 season by Pro Football Focus. What makes the unit even more of a threat is that the group is extremely deep, with first-rounder Andre Dillardand established veterans Stefen Wisniewski and Halapoulivaati Vaitai behind a set of expected starters that includes four multi-time Pro Bowlers (Jason Peters, Jason Kelce, Brandon Brooks and Lane Johnson, though Brooks is recovering from an Achilles tear suffered in the playoffs). Doing some digging during my time with the Eagles this week, it came up repeatedly how deep the team is at offensive line and running back.

"I just think it's not just me," Howard said. "We have a lot of different guys with a lot of different skill sets and a lot of different talents. It creates a lot of challenges for a defense, and I'm not even talking about our receivers and tight ends."

First, there's Howard, who has impressed a coaching staff that knew a lot about him and which has been very pleased now, seeing him day in and day out at camp. Now keep an eye out for Miles Sanders, drafted in the second round out of Penn State. He is turning heads on a consistent basis in camp, and his name is one I'm told to watch for this season. Throw in the ageless Darren Sproles and one of the stars of Super Bowl LII, Corey Clement, and you have a backfield that is loaded.

NJ.com reports that Jordan Howard has "run the ball quite well throughout camp."

Nevertheless, reporter Zack Rosenblatt expects Miles Sanders to overtake Howard atop the depth chart "soon." Rosenblatt does predict Howard could be one of the backfield's "top options" in short-yardage situations. The fact that Howard probably won't be *the* top option in short-yardage/goal-to-go situations means his standard league fantasy value will be quite limited. Although supposedly improving as a pass catcher, Howard remains a PPR nonentity.

Would you guys pick up Howard in a non-PPR? He was cut in the waivers run Tuesday night. I’m not happy with my RB depth and my considerations to drop for him are Kirk Cousins (he’s my backup to Russ Wilson) and Justice Hill.

My other backs are Chubb, Henry, Damian Williams, Royce Freeman, and Raheem Mostert.

Definitely for Cousins IMO. I wouldn't for Hill though.

Jordan Howard rushed 15 times for 87 yards and two touchdowns in the Eagles' Week 4 win over the Packers, adding three receptions for 28 additional yards and a touchdown.

Miles Sanders blew a chance at a huge run on the Eagles' first play from scrimmage, and Howard came in and reeled off 19 yards on the next snap. That helped set the tone for just the second three-score performance of his career. Howard's receiving touchdown was only his second as a pro. It was a 20-yarder on a screen one play after Howard looked extremely hesitant on an eight-yard grab. Both Howard and Sanders were gashing the Pack's front seven. Sanders remains the preferred fantasy own, but especially until the Eagles' skill corps gets back to 100 percent health, Howard might be poised to offer FLEX value. The Jets are on tap for Week 5.

Was just starting to think about dropping him for a speculative pick up. Gonna hang on a little longer.

Glad to see him count in some of my best ball teams this week.

Duce Staley on Jordan Howard: "He’s a quiet guy and he just goes to work. He picks up his lunch pail, he picks up his hard hat and he just goes to work. He’s a good guy, he’s coachable. He loves contact and he’s physical.” #Eagles

Zack Rosenblatt @ZackBlatt

Duce Staley on the #Eagles RB rotation: "We have a three-headed monster. It’s been like that for a while around here and it will continue to be. Each and every week, the gameplan itself changes."

Jordan Howard had 11 carries for 50 yards in Week 7 against Dallas.

Howard got the better half of a timeshare with Miles Sanders this week. He still played fewer snaps, but that was gamescript based. Howard has taken on a larger role with DeSean Jackson out over the past month, averaging 13 carries per game. He'll be touchdown-dependent for a matchup with Buffalo in Week 8.

Jordan Howard rushed 23 times for 96 yards and one touchdown in the Eagles' 31-13, Week 8 win over the Bills.

He added one catch for 15 yards. Howard had been bottled up much of the afternoon, but the Eagles kept feeding him and hammering the ball into the teeth of the Buffalo defense. Howard broke through late with a 20-yard fourth-quarter run and later finished off the drive with a three-yard touchdown. Miles Sanders also had his way with a 65-yard touchdown run on the opening drive of the third quarter. In total, the two backs combined for 229 yards and two scores. Howard has a revenge game at home against the Bears next week

Jordan Howard rushed 19 times for 82 yards and a touchdown in Philadelphia's Week 9 win over the Bears.

Even with Darren Sproles back healthy, Howard out-carried Miles Sanders (10/42) 19 to 10 and handled goal line work as Philadelphia's lead back. Leaky run defense has been an issue for Chicago ever since Akiem Hicks went down and that proved to be the case again as Howard and Sanders combined for 29/124/1 on the ground. Sproles and the rookie figure to continue soaking up targets from the backfield, but Howard remains a touchdown-dependent RB3 who projects to lead Philadelphia in carries over the second half of the season. Temper expectations when the Eagles return from their bye in Week 11 against the Patriots.

Jordan Howard (shoulder) was limited for Wednesday's practice.

His designation is odd if only because the Eagles just returned from extended rest over their bye week. Howard has yet to eclipse the 100-yard mark in any game this year but has handled double-digit touches in every contest since Week 3, including 23 and 19 carries in his last two. Sunday makes for a great matchup as long as he's cleared since the Patriots have recently been gouged on the ground by Nick Chubb (20/131) and Mark Ingram (15/115). Miles Sanders would soak up any vacant opportunity if Howard sits.

Jordan Howard (stinger) will remain a limited participant at Friday's practice.

Howard has practiced all week but hasn't been cleared for contact while battling a stinger. With Howard's status up in the air and Darren Sproles lost to a season-ending hip injury, don't be surprised if Philadelphia adds a running back ahead of Sunday's 4:25 PM ET start against New England. Free agent Jay Ajayi (who the Eagles are hosting for a workout Friday) could be a possibility while practice-squadder DeAngelo Henderson would be an option if the Eagles choose to stay in house.

Rotoworld:

Jordan Howard (stinger) is officially questionable for Week 11 against the Patriots.

Howard hasn't been cleared for contact yet and has been limited in practice. The running back is heading towards a game-time decision. Howard would be a flex option if healthy, even in a terrifying matchup with New England because the Eagles are so banged up in their skill positions. Miles Sanders and the newly signed Jay Ajayi would pick up the work if Howard is inactive Sunday.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports Jordan Howard (shoulder) is not expected to play in Week 11 against the Patriots.

Jay Ajayi is expected to make his 2019 debut, although his workload for Sunday remains unclear. With Miles Sanders and Boston Scott also available, the rookie projects to out-touch Ajayi in what will officially be the latter's first game action since initially tearing his ACL on October 7 just last year. Sanders qualifies as a low-end RB3 in PPR leagues since the Patriots have recently been gutted up the middle for 35/231 and 6.6 yards per carry by Nick Chubb and Mark Ingram. Patrick Chung's (heel/chest, out) absence also bodes well for both Zach Ertz and Dallas Goedert.

Jordan Howard (shoulder) is questionable for the Eagles' Week 12 matchup against the Seahawks.

Jay Ajayi is expected to be somewhat involved against the Seahawks if Howard is again inactive. Still, this is Miles Sanders' backfield at the moment. Sanders posted modest 11-38-0 rushing and 2-9-0 receiving lines in Week 11 against the Patriots, but coach Doug Pederson clearly trusts him more than just about any other RB that he's had in Philly. Overall, Sanders' robust 85% snap rate is the highest single-game mark of any Eagles RB since Pederson took over in 2016.

Doug Pederson said Howard still has not been cleared for contact but believes it’s not season ending per Zack Rosenblatt

Do we think Ajajyi gets more touches if Howard is out or is Miles Sanders in line for possibly 20 touches MNF?  It might hurt that Eli is starting with a healthy Engram, Shepard, Barkley, Tate now.

The Athletic's Zach Berman doesn't expect Jordan Howard (shoulder) to play in Week 14 against the Giants.

Howard has been limited in practice the last two weeks but still isn't cleared for contact. That's unlikely to happen before Monday, leaving Miles Sanders to carry the load again this week. Howard's likely absence creates a smash spot for Sanders against a Giants defense that's allowed the third most rushing touchdowns in the league.

NBC Sports' Derrick Gunn reports Jordan Howard (shoulder) won't play Monday night against the Giants.

As expected. Coach Doug Pederson has featured Miles Sanders to the tune of an 85% snap rate or higher in each of the past three games. Previously, no RB had managed to surpass even 80% in a single game under Pederson since he took over in 2016. Continue to treat Sanders as an upside RB2 with Howard sidelined.

Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94 WIP reports there has been "no change" in Jordan Howard's status.

Still feeling the effects of a pinched nerve in his shoulder, Howard has yet to be cleared for contact and appears headed for his fourth straight absence. Even taking into account Boston Scott's increased role Monday night, fantasy owners can safely go back to the Miles Sanders well Sunday in Washington. Given all the Eagles' injuries at receiver (JJ Arcega-Whiteside, Greg Ward and Robert Davis are their projected starters), don't be surprised if Sanders pushes for 20-plus touches in a great matchup. He's very much in the RB2 discussion.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen reports Jordan Howard (questionable, shoulder) will not play Week 16 against the Cowboys.

Howard, who had never missed a game before this season, appears headed for his sixth straight absence. A pinched nerve has been the culprit. With Howard still not cleared for contact, rookie Miles Sanders will draw another start in his place. Coming off a career game in last week's win at Washington (two touchdowns, 172 yards from scrimmage), Sanders should keep the RB2 train rolling for final weeks.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reports the Eagles are getting Jordan Howard (shoulder) back for their Week 17 matchup against the Giants.

Howard hasn't played since Week 9. He was averaging a strong 4.4 yards per carry prior to the injury, providing a 'thunder' to the 'lightening' that rookie RB Miles Sanders has made a habit of producing in his debut season. Still, it seems unlikely that Howard will unseat Sanders as the offense's starting RB considering how vital the rookie RB has been to the team's success in recent weeks. Boston Scott could also continue to see some snaps considering the offense is still dealing with plenty of injuries at receiver.

Eagles coach Doug Pederson confirms Jordan Howard (shoulder) is "good to go" for Week 17 against the Giants.

Howard will return from a six-game absence after finally being cleared for contact. A pinched nerve has bothered him for most of the past two months. Pederson admitted Howard won't see a full workload in his return. He'll likely handle a change-of-pace/short-yardage role behind Rookie of the Year contender Miles Sanders. Boston Scott will mix in as well.
