Notre Dame redshirt sophomore RB Kyren Williams has declared for the 2022 NFL Draft and will opt out of the team's bowl game.

Williams (5'9/195) is ready to make the leap for the NFL and announced it on Friday via his Twitter account. In his last two seasons, Williams has been one of the most versatile running backs in the nation, racking up 2,120 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns, while also catching 77 passes for 672 yards and another four scores. This season, Williams enjoyed several big weeks, but perhaps none was bigger than his Week 9 game against UNC, when he rushed for 199 yards and one touchdown on 22 carries, while also catching two passes for 15 yards. Williams went for 100+ yards from scrimmage in seven of his 12 games this year, and rushed for over 100 yards twice. Williams could be a Day 2 pick of the 2022 Draft, and could profile as a three-down back.

Kyren is one of the better blocking RBs I've seen. I'm a big ND fan and on top of him having that knack for making the first guy miss, he also is a back who'll always stick his nose in there and enjoys to block. We've all said that will be the trait that'll help him play early in the NFL. I think if he gets a legit shot, he could definitely do some damage and be more than just a third down back.

I think he's a true wildcard in dynasty drafts.  Usage could be a concern, or like you said, his blocking could put him on the field more than someone might think.

Agreed. I'm trying to trade for him now. Faust's article intrigues me for multiple of those landing spots. One person calling him James White could definitely be the intriguing option for owners at his price.

I slightly disagree with the wear/tear concern I see though as he's also shown a good knack for avoiding the big shots. He knows when to get down to avoid the big hit, but also almost never went down from the first person who hit him. If he can keep that up, no reason he couldn't play more other than because of the coach or scheme, but not because of concern about punishment he'd take.

Not a RB, but the best I ever saw at this, still putting up HOF numbers, was Marvin Harrison.  He was very smart knowing when to go down if nothing was there.  He did this too much later in his career IMO.

 
5'9 194.

That size, good receiver, and good pass blocking form/ effort (but probably not big enough to do it effectively)? Sounds like Myles Gaskin to me. Paaasss.

Gaskin ran a slow 4.58. He is faster I think. More of a Giovani Bernard.

Yeah, Gaskin bulked up to 205 for the combine, but ran a slow 40 as a result. He has said that he bulked up too much for it since then, and is listed size is identical to Williams. 

Bernard was 5'8 202. IDK how much BMI matters at that weight, but an inch shorter and 8 lbs heavier is a big change imo.

Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams posted an official time of 4.70 in the 40-yard dash at the Combine.

The forty time was the slowest among this year's running backs. It's a major red flag for Williams, who's listed under 200 pounds. A two-year starter, Williams rushed for over 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons and had 27 touchdowns, with 14 coming over his final eight games. Williams, a receiving back that caught 42 passes last year, projects as a Day 3 pick.

I have to back pat myself. I was out on this guy before it was fashionable to be in on him. He didn't move well in his highlights enough for his stated weight. It just didn't look right.

Posted after the first run, but yes the 2nd pretty much confirmed it lol.

I was not really interested in this guy. I thought it would be an upset if he came in at 195, because he looked really slight in college. Maybe that was really the case and he added a lot of weight for the combine, and got really slow as a result. 

Either way, I feel bad for the kid. How did he not know his weight/workout when he decided to leave ND early? The NFL/NCAA should really have something like the NBA, where players can return to school after the combine if they don't hire an agent. 

 
Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams Relative Athletic Score dropped from 4.52 to 3.37 making his testing an even bigger disappointment.

Going into the season, Williams (5'9/194) had a lot of buzz. He had just rushed for 1,000 yards and followed it up with a similar season. There were always questions about his long speed and they surfaced in a major way at the combine. He ran a 4.65 40-yard dash and didn't jump very well. When he ran the agilities at his pro day, they weren't good. His short shuttle dropped 32 percentile and the three-cone dropped two percentile from what was initially reported. Those drops caused an 11.5 percentile drop in RAS, which is quite substantial. For a player that already had questions, Williams likely won't come off the board until day three.

Go watch the Clemson tape from 2020.   He had a 90 yard TD run, out raced that defense.   He isnt a NFL workhorse, but can be electric in the passing game.   
As a ND fan, I watched a lot of him over the last couple years, he has juice.   Not flat out speed, but quick, changes direction on a dime, makes people miss.  He can catch.   I would love the Steelers to sneak him in a later round to back up Najee.   And get rid of Snell.

 
If he's available at late 3rd round or early 4th round, I think TB Buccaneers would pounce.  Tom Brady always love his pass-catching back (i.e. James White).  Ke'shaun Vaughn hasn't panned out.

 
Rams traded up with the Raiders to select Notre Dame RB Kyren Williams with the No. 164 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Rams gave the Raiders the 175th and 238th selections. Williams (5'9/194) emerged as a sophomore at Notre Dame in 2020 with a 211-1,125-13 rushing line, winning the ACC's Rookie of the Year award. He followed up with a 2021 season rushing performance of 204-1,002-14. Williams is also an accomplished receiver, totaling 78 receptions for 675 yards and four touchdowns in 26 games. Williams' outlook took a hit when he ran a 4.65 40 at the Combine, putting his ability to translate to the NFL in doubt. Nevertheless, Williams' college production indicates he can operate as a committee rusher with a receiving role in the mold of Michael Carter. Alternatively, Williams is a reliable enough passing down option that he could emerge as a third-down specialist.

Rams coach Sean McVay said RB Kyren Williams suffered a broken foot and is expected to return during training camp.

The Rams traded up into the fifth round of the 2021 NFL Draft to select Williams. The Notre Dame back rushed for over 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons and is a plus as a receiver out of the backfield. He has a shot at usurping Darrell Henderson for backup duties in LA, though the missed practice time all but cements Henderson as the No. 2 back for Week 1. Henderson would step into a large role if Akers is ever sidelined, giving him plenty of upside in the later rounds of fantasy drafts.

It is The Athletic's Jourdan Rodrigue's "sense" that the Rams' "hope" for fifth-round RB Kyren Williams is to "eventually take over the Darrell Henderson role in the offense."

"Henderson is in a contract season, but is also recovering from injury and has dealt with a variety of injuries over the past few seasons," was Rodrigue's summation of Henderson's current standing with the team. Coach Sean McVay has made little secret of the fact that he does not trust Henderson to stay healthy. The problem right now, of course, is that Williams is recovering from a broken foot and may not be ready until the "middle phase of training camp." We would not expect Williams to jump Henderson on the depth chart this season, but it is certainly sounding like Henderson will be allowed to walk next spring. We would also expect a committee to develop were starter Cam Akers to go down.

Kyren Williams could make preseason debut on Friday against Texans​


The Los Angeles Rams play the Houston Texans on Friday at 6 PM PT at SoFi Stadium and the team would like to have their rookie fifth round pick Kyren Williams available, if possible. On Sunday, head coach Sean McVay didn’t close the door on Williams returning from injury by Friday, saying that his status is “to be determined.”

Williams suffered a broken foot in the offseason and recently returned to practice off of the PUP list. He did not play in L.A.’s first preseason game against the Chargers, but could be of use this Friday against the Texans since it is unlikely McVay wants to see more of Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson.

The Rams also have Jake Funk, A.J. Rose, Trey Ragas, and Raymond Calais at running back but the sooner to give Williams game action before Week 1, the better.

The assumed backup to Cam Akers is Darrell Henderson, however Henderson is entering the final year of his rookie deal, hence the reason for the selection of Williams in the first place. In the NFL game today, it is almost mandatory to have at least two running backs to rely on, as it is naive to expect one man to carry such a load. The Rams will have three legitimate threats from the tailback spot which, assuming they all stay healthy, will allow McVay to rotate them in a manner that will keep everyone fresh. I fully expect Williams to sneak into the rotation early and often, which will give him a shot to be much more impactful than your typical 5th round selection.

Schefter and Schrager talking up Kyren, got a lil buzz going in the FFC before tonight’s game.

Particularly Schefty saying he is starting him as his RB2, albeit in a 16 team league on the Fantasy Focus podcast.

I think people are assuming he has some info about how much Williams is going to be used.

That combined with McVay holding Kyren out in preseason saying he’s going to play a role in this offense has my spidey senses tingling a bit.

I think (purely my speculation) that McVay held him out because Williams was working his way back from injury, and McVay did not want to risk re-injury or a setback, especially with both Akers and Henderson out of action at the time. If Akers and Henderson are able to share the load, I do not expect we will see much of Williams tonight, but I like him to work his way into a role as the season progresses.
 
My guess was that Akers / Hendo were still nursing those mysterious soft tissue injuries at the time so he didn’t want to risk Kyren getting injured.

Either way, I think he could be worth a stash for tonight if you play in Yahoo or other leagues where you can drop your Kicker to see what he does.

I dropped my last guys and picked him up everywhere. Those names Alfred, Kamara, Mitchell were always last rd guys gotten by Schefty. I would hate to play in his league.

I added him in my 16 spots, 14 team league a little earlier after reading this thread. I dropped one of the 2 TEs I drafted, Henry (starting Albert O) because there’s nothing to lose. I’ll likely be streaming TEs to some extent anyway.
 
Yahoo’s excellent feature allowing you drop a player that has already played in full affect.

End of bench to see what happens tonight.

It would be one thing if Schefter said he’s thinks he’d have a good season.

It’s another thing for Schefter to say he’s STARTING him TONIGHT.
 
I dunno, not saying he would have been lead dog, but judging from Cam’s usage tonight there’s a universe out there where Williams got some decent run if he didn’t get injured.

I don’t know if I’ll be able to, but if anyone has room, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to hold and see how things shake out next week assuming he’s healthy enough to go.
 

ESPN's Field Yates reports Rams RB Kyren Williams suffered a high-ankle sprain Thursday night against the Bills.​

The fifth-round rookie missed a large chunk of the offseason program because of a broken foot. According to Yates, this injury could sideline Williams "up to six weeks." Even once he gets back to full health, Williams will need injuries ahead of him on the depth chart to sniff fantasy value.

Rams coach Sean McVay said RB Kyen Williams will have surgery on his high-ankle sprain and be sidelined 6-8 weeks.​

There was some talk about Williams being involved in the Rams backfield rotation to start the season but that was quickly shelved once the rookie suffered the injury. It sounds like an IR stint is forthcoming. This'll slide Jake Funk up to the No. 3 back role, but as long as Cam Akers and Darrell Henderson are healthy it'll be hard for the depth backs to have fantasy value.

Well Henderson was also the Rams 3rd down/receiving back so I think anything can happen.

He should definitely be on everyone's redraft radar because there isn't much competition in front of him ATM. I like Henderson a lot but I am not 100% sold on him and I also wonder if he can hold up to the feature back role.
 
Hoping to snap him up in next week’s waivers - should hopefully fly under the radar with the Rams on bye next week. Unless of course Henderson craps out tomorrow and Akers is sent packing or something drastic like that.

Just picked him up too. Sounds like the buzz on Kyren is starting to get out and if Akers is sent packing, which looks like a reasonable chance, Kyren’s value will jump significantly.
