GMs passed over Lamar Jackson 31 times in the 2018 draft. Even the Ravens thought a TE who they barely use was a better player than Jackson. He wasn't good enough to start 2018 over Joe Flacco and was booed by fans when he played. They probably should have drafted another QB in the 2019 draft.

he has 608 yards this year. 46.8 ypg143 carries, 905 yards, 6.3ypc.
And they are going to draft a RB
ah, I see, sorry. Didn't realize you were talking about his 5 year career, with 905 yards being a lot. He does have a 6.0 avg this year, just a bit less than Taysom Hill, kerrith Whyte, Justin Jackson, and Daniel Jones

Homer view here: Mostert is a gamer. He’s taken the job, and rightfully so. It wasn’t attrition, he just came out and outplayed Breida & Coleman.
he hits the hole hard, which is a refreshing change from the hesitation RBs - and he’s got above average speed, and a surprising amount of power with soft hands & good routes.
i can’t see the Niners drafting a RB of the future with the 3 they’ve got right now all being effective to one degree or another.
Mostert is fun to watch.

With Chark Week unexpectedly cancelled, it is Raheem Muststart.
I love owning Mostert in redraft but I have little interest in him in dynasty. I think the 49ers' intention is to have a corral of small and speedy running backs who are going to be inherently injury prone because of their small size, and in some cases, reckless running style. So this group of 4 or 5 diminutive running backs will all take turns getting hurt and take turns in the spotlight. All the 49ers need is for 1 or 2 of them to be healthy at any one time. They maybe even knew that Mostert was the running back that they wanted at the end of the season and playoffs because he looked just as electric last year as he has this year. Or maybe they'll switch to another starter when January comes. It's anyone's guess.
In 2020, Coleman is due $4.9 million and McKinnon is due $6.5 million so either could be cut. They might draft a running back in rounds 4-6 if that running back fits what they want in a running back. He would likely be 190lbs-210lbs and run a 4.40 40 or faster. But it's probably more likely they'll just grab an UDFA or sign a free agent or both. They might even bring back Coleman and McKinnon. There is no way to predict what will happen. But one thing that is predictable is that whoever are the 4th and 5th running backs next season will likely see playing time. And they will likely be effective despite their lack of pedigree.

Breida is a rfa, Coleman has one year left, Mostert has a couple years left.
If they let Breida walk, drafting someone by the end of day 2 makes sense IMO. Fwiw, Todd McShay agrees

Brieda probably won’t be expensive, so they’ll probably be returning their whole rotation. I don’t know if they even have any day 2 picks. It’d be pretty stunning if they drafted a RB in the first given what Shanahan is able to do with less heralded players there.

Ok, I missed that Lynch only has the late 1 and nothing until the 5th. I'll assume he'll move around, probably dropping into the early 2 as one of the other teams looks to get their QB in the 1st.
You make a fair point with the lack of picks. They don't have many pressing needs, so I'll stick to my opinion that they find a way to get more picks and one will be a back. But as currently stands, that's less likely than I had thought.

They also have Jeff Wilson who had a few moments and Jerick McKinnon. I would think McKinnon is likely to get cut. He has done nothing since he signed a big contract due to injury> Cutting him creates dead money but also cap savings so I would guess he will be gone. Wilson is also a free agent but I would say there is a chance they could let Breida leave and bring back Wilson but I think Breida is back unless there is some insane offer for him.
You do realize he's averaging 6ypc as a 49er.
I guess having the highest ypc at 5.6 this year of qualified RBs isn't good enough.
I forgot about Wilson too. I wouldn’t be surprised if they spent a late round flier on a player Shanahan thinks is intriguing, but I don’t think there’s any scenario in which any RB on the roster is a high level fantasy player next year.

Currently, they have a 1st and don't draft again until the Broncos 5th rounder. 1st, 2 5ths, a 6th and 2 7ths. Yikes
Wouldn't be surprised to see them move down in the 1st to pick up a 3rd or 4th depending on who is still available.
When a guy runs for 220 yards in the postseason (only 28 shy of the NFL record) that team should definitely get another RB in their next draft.

You could tell Mostert had something cooking in the first few games out of the gate. Was a crowded backfield but for the most part, when his number was called, he not only made the most of it, he looked good doing it.
His fantasy stock skyrocketed after this game and would imagine people might overpay for him -- I could see the team letting Breida walk. He is much younger than Coleman and Mostert, but has been a constant injury liability. I could see the 9ers retaining Coleman and Mostert as a 1-2 punch.
That said, they could easily retain Breida and try to move Coleman. Or use Mostert's performance to sell him high.
Either way, agree that it does no harm whatsoever for the 9ers to be looking for their next young back to plug into this rotation. I think they should -- it would be a boon to the team given how well they are set up to both maximize the run game, and platoon RBs, to get the next young stud in there and future proof the offensive run game.

Miswrote that at the time, meant move down from the 1st as a team needing a QB wants to have the 5th year option.
Mostert has made the most of his opportunities but a crowded backfield this will remain. Coleman will be back and play a role and Breida has shown he can be outstanding with managed used. This has the look of a three headed monster next year, which is great in real football and problematic for fantasy. The Niners won't voluntarily change this calculus; it has brought them to a NFC title and a potential Super Bowl trophy.
I would be surprised if they pick and RB in the first two or three rounds, but if the board lines up a certain way once they go through their valuation process and the right player falls to them based upon their board, you can't rule it out. Mostert will have value next year but, at this point, he looks like someone that ends up around RB20 right now.

I think the SF O-line deserves a lot of the credit for yesterday's performance. As a Mostert owner, I hope SF put's all their 2020 draft eggs into O-line and defense. 200 touches in 2020 and he's an RB #2.

Not far from an RB #1, really.
Really curious as to where he's ranked in redrafts in 7 months. Worries me some that he's never wrestled more touches away from the other backs on the roster. Or is Kyle Shanahan the type that if he had Jim Brown and Trent Richardson on the same roster, he'd still split carries?

If he does even decent in the Super Bowl, no way he falls to round 2. He just ran amok in front of a huge TV audience and certainly outplayed a seemingly guaranteed 1st rounder in Jones. A lot people will better remember what they saw in December than what some stat head tells them his 2020 season projects to be in August
If you were Shanahan and did as well as you have with a 3 man platoon, I don't know how you don't give Jim Brown some pine time if Richardson, or Byner or whatever practice squad guy is averaging 7 yards a carry.

Seems fine to cash in found currency, but think I'll hold Mostert if it is bird in the hand vs 2 in the bush. I can pick up extra 3rds for chopped liver in my league, so that piece doesn't do much for me.

Damn good RB. Dynasty teams that don't have him, want him for cheap, because the team that has him got him cheap (off the ww). I don't think I would sell for a late 2nd rd pick at this point. Hell, I dropped him in a league and picked him up in others. He might be worth more to me than trading him for a late 2nd or 3rd rd rookie pick, which is ridiculous IMO.

Mostert averaged 5.6 yards per carry in the regular season -- the entire team averaged 4.6 ypc.
But if the answer is that Mostert can't be at least 60% usage back because Kyle Shanahan MUST stubbornly use three backs ... than it is what it is. Hey, I see it every year here with Sean Payton.

I get ya about usage. We take an educated running back SWAG come August about a lot of teams not named Dallas. Every coach is going to do what gives him his best shot at winning Sunday's game. Whether that's 40 carries or 4 for his #1 (in our opinion) guy. He's got to do it with an eye on his potential December game too, but how much? I have zero idea.
That's why we pay Dodds $100 a year to have those 32 bugs in the team's meeting rooms
