RB Ronald Jones, Cowboys (2 Viewers)

He's got to be the most divisive guy this  year. The Dalvin Cook of 2018. I was super excited when I saw the highlights of him and I really wanted him to Detroit. However, red flags are popping up and I have to be skeptical now- especially since there are so many good backs this year.

Was just thinking that...this kid has not made things easy during the draft process...he is a high-end prospect who I thought would be blowing people away leading up to the draft (kind of like what DJ Moore is doing on the WR side of things) but it has been choppy...I still like him and he is on my radar but I have more trepidation than I thought I would have...

 
For folks concerned about Jones I wonder what happens to those concerns if Jones is the 3rd RB selected in the draft?

If he is the 10th RB selected then it shows that teams did not value him as much as the other RB, but if he is one of the top RB selected, it will say the opposite about him.

That doesn't help anyone in regards to Jones right now, but the draft will be a bigger deal for him than some of the other RB for folks I think.

I have only charted 3 games of Jones and two of those games he did very good. Against Ohio State he doesn't. Against Alabama he mostly was shut down as well, but he has a great play against them that I think demonstrates his speed very well. They made a mistake and Jones was able to make a big play out of it, a play that had the secondary of the defense reeling because they didn't react quickly enough to how fast Jones is. That play shows me that his speed is translating to the next level of competition.

I don't really like Jones lack of power but he has decent pad level and technique with his runs, he just doesn't move a pile much. I also haven't seen many examples of great elusiveness from Jones, but I could watch some more games, maybe that shows up more in games I haven't charted.. I did find a clip of cut ups of most of his 2017 plays which was about 30 minutes that I watched, but I didn't chart all of those games. Elusiveness isn't something that stood out to me enough that I thought to myself I need to chart specific games because of it.

Good vision, speed, acceleration, burst, footwork, balance, pad level but lacks power and elusiveness based on the 3 games charted.

His agility score flat out sucks too (combo of SS and 3-cone) 11.4 is not good for a RB no matter how you spin that one.  To put that in perspective Jarvian Franklin (239lbs) had a 11.24 agility score and Chris Warren (247 lbs) had a 11.16 agility score. This smells stinky as if he did it through the injury. Whoever talked him into it is a moron.

nfldraftscout.com tracks SS and three cone. The sum of those two is “agility score”. I just did the math myself for Jones. It’s possible they listed it wrong but Gil Brandt is connected to nfldraftscout in some way I believe, so that’s the numbers that will probably end up there.

Pretty simple...they go away...at this point I think we just need confirmation he is what many think he is...the off-season really has not done that but if he goes #3 or is a late first-rounder/early second rounder none of that will matter anymore...

I just can’t fathom him as a first round pick. The recent backs that have gone in the first at less than 210 have mostly displayed sub 4.45 speed leading up to the draft. Backs I’ve come across in this category include C.J. Spiller, Jahvid Best, Kevin Jones, Michael Bennett and Trung Candidate. David Wilson and Felix Jones were the exceptions to that at 4.49 and 4.47 respectively.

What a funky list...a whole lot of almost good...

 
I'm worried.  I was a big fan of his after initially watching him, but now it's been basically a month and a half since the combine, and he's still fighting an injury?  Or is he really that a poor tester for athleticism?  Either way it's been a while for him to heal, and he either hasn't healed or he has but he just isn't athletic enough to be considered as high of a prospect as guys like Guice, Chubb, Michel.  Pre-draft, I had him as my #2 RB.  I can't justify that spot anymore with how many questions are coming up about him.  I agree draft spot will say a lot, but even then if he's not a 2nd round pick at all, which I think is very likely at this point, he'll be dropping down my rankings to ~10 (2QB leagues).

 
USC RB Ronald Jones took an official predraft visit to the Philadelphia Eagles on Tuesday.

Rotoworld's Josh Norris coming in with this Jones tip. The USC speedster is not the only running back whom the Eagles have been kicking the tires on of late, as they also hosted LSU's Derrius Guice on Tuesday. Should Philly be legitimately interested in the 5-foot-11, 205-pound Jones, they're in a prime position to sit back, assess the draft waters and then decide whether a trade up or down might be in order. The 32nd pick is in the wheelhouse -- perhaps just a touch early -- for a potential Jones selection.

An NFL scout told Bob McGinn Football that USC RB Ronald Jones reminds him of former Kansas City Chiefs RB Jamaal Charles.

While the scout is impressed by Jones' ability to bust the long run on any given play -- much like Charles in his prime -- he wonders whether the 5-foot-11, 205-pounder possesses the physical fortitude for every-down work. Another scout who spoke with McGinn hit on this potential issue, noting that Jones is "fast as (expletive) but he has no power" and that he's "not an inside runner." The Trojans speedster is a probable Day 2 selection for the draft later this week.

Bucs selected USC RB Ronald Jones with the No. 38 overall pick in the 2018 draft.

The Bucs needed to add to one of the league's thinnest backfields. Jones (5’11/205) turned pro as a third-year junior after breaking out for 261/1,550/5.9/19 rushing in 2017, finishing second among draft-eligible backs in forced missed tackles (58) and averaging 6.12 career yards per carry. Jones doubled as a track athlete at USC and it shows on tape, where his game is built on burst and acceleration, a la Tevin Coleman. While his big-play ability is obvious, Jones too frequently ran into the backs of his blockers and has work to do in the passing game, where his blitz pickups were inconsistent, and Jones caught only 32 passes in 40 college games.

Like the pick for the Bucs. Gives their run game the big gain element they desperately need. Really couldn't ask for a better landing spot with what he brings to the table.

 
I wanted Guice. The Bucs opted for the home run hitter over the more physical player. 

They also drafted Cappa to play guard. Nasty interior o-line to block for RJ.

Also PFF said Jones had some of the ugliest dropped dump off passes they have seen.

I’m not a Penny believer on the Seahawks.  I was high on Michel, but I don’t trust B.B. and the Patriots usage of him, so I’ve backed away from Michel at 1.03 and have never been on the Penny bandwagon

This is gonna be big.  Tb underachieved last year and I bet bounces back with a nice year. Jones will be right in the middle of it

 
So does the fact that he's competing for yards and TD's with so many offensive weapons make him more or less desirable in fantasy circles?  Tampa might have the best collection of skill talent on the league.  He's not going to be facing many stacked boxes and he has plenty of inside wiggle to break big runs.

The more I watch him the more I think he was the perfect compliment to the talent already in place.

He seems to be a powerful inside runner in spite of the size, but I would still expect Peyton Barber to be the goalline back, and Sims is still likely to take 3rd downs in 2018.  For dynasty purposes I think he's in a great spot though.

Not trying to be a wise-### but if your competition is Barber and Sims you could be doing 1,000 times worse...Sims has had his chance and appears to be a JAG and while Barber could turn out to be ok If Jones is what many think he is he should not put too much of a dent into his production...this is one of the better spots he could have gone to...

Oh.  I agree.  Beyond this season it's Jones' job to lose.

Yeah, it says rushing grade so I assume that is rushing the ball and not factoring in receiving. It almost doesn't even matter what one thinks of him, he went in the 2nd round to a team that really needs a RB. He should be in consideration for the second pick in rookie drafts.

You are likely correct in that it does not factor in receiving/blocking.

I see it mostly as a plus as I do for Barkley.

The Giants and Bucs offensive lines could use improvement, but to me this gets offset by all of the other very good weapons at receiver and TE that defenses have to account for which leads to lighter boxes and less attention being focused on stopping the run.

I think he is going to be very good. Only question I have is how much will Jones be used as a receiving option?

RB targets over the last 3 seasons with Winston have been

2017 85 targets 4 players
2016 70 targets 4 players
2015 117 targets 3 players but 114 went to Sims and Martin

I would assume that Sims is still involved in some capacity, how much?

Winston likes to push the ball downfield. Throws to RB have declined since his rookie season. The Bucs have better weapons downfield (and RB were injured).

I could see the targets to RB going up and if Jones and Sims are healthy most of the year it may be closer to 2015 than the last two years as far as that goes.

 
Their screen game is pretty good, and Jones seemed to be a solid screen receiver, but Jameis doesn't typically go the RB too often unless the play is scripted that way.

 
If a team has Jones ranked above Chubb in the rushing category, I have to question their scouting. 

That being said, great landing spot.

Evans is a stud, Jackson has seen his better days, Brate is a solid player but average talent - jury is out on Howard and Jones but they seem to be talents.

I just don't think they're close to being the "best collection of skill talent in the league".

I couldn't think of a team with a better collection of talent across all three levels of the offense like that.  Maybe you can.

Rams, Chiefs, Steelers, Giants, Vikings, Saints, Falcons, Chargers for sure all have more talent at the skill positions.

Broncos, Bengals, Browns and Texans all can be argued to have a better collection of talent.

Then we have teams that may not look better “on paper” but are much more productive offenses like the Patriots, Lions and Packers.

Teams that look to be on the rise and could be much better like the Bears and Jaguars.

If you wanted to put the Bucs after those first 8 teams I wouldn’t argue much, so I guess you could say they’re top 10 – but I don’t see anything to get tremendously excited about after Evans.

The Bucs match up with all of those teams at WR and none of them hold a candle to them at TE except the Patriots or Chiefs, and they each only have one receiving threat at the position.  Tampa has two.  I personally don't think the jury is out on Howard.  He averaged 16.6 per catch, had 6 TDs and 432 yards on only 39 targets. 

I don't know yet on Jones, but that was the point of the comment.  He's headed into an offense with some serious targets on it.  Maybe I should have said "receiving skill talent."

I'll just let my last post stand and agree to disagree especially if you think the Bucs WRs match with all those teams and you want to ignore Evan Engram, Hunter Henry, Kyle Rudolph and Tyler Eifert as talents. And yes, "receiving skill talent" would have made the statement a bit more realistic at least.

Anyway I apologize for derailing the thread. I like Ronald Jones and agree he is heading into a very good situation overall. No arguments there.

 
Is there much correlation between receiving threats and running back production? It sounds like a reason for an OC to throw it down field instead of running or passing to a back.

Are you a Bucs fan?  You seem to be inordinately high on a lot of these guys.  Particularly Brake and a 31 year old DJax.

Just picking one of those above teams out at random.

OBJ >> Evans
Shepard = DJax
Engram = Brate/Howard
Barkley >> RoJo
