That’s how the better RBs raise their ypc. They can bust off a long run here and there because they have the talent and ability to do so. The mediocre backs can’t on a regulat basis.
This is going to change. The Pats are developing Sony’s passing game. I believe they see Sony in the mold of Dion Lewis. And he has been getting 1-2 targets a game. For the first time Sony was in several shotgun formations which he converted for chunks of yards including that 34 TD run. The arrow is pointing up for his oppprtunities.

I agree that the key for Sony going from high end RB2 to a legit RB1 will be passing game usage. Even with a very limited passing game usage, RB is so shallow that it's tough to find many names ahead of him for standard: Gurley, AK, Zeke, Gordon, Saquon, Hunt, CMc, Mixon and from there it's pretty wide open with how one might want to rank Sony, DJ, Peterson, Lynch, Conner, Hyde.

All you folks calling for Sony to take over White’s role as passing back are clearly not paying attention to what Brady is saying or Belechick’s historical use of his backs.
I love Michel’s potential. Own him in a couple leagues. But White isn’t going anywhere this year. The sooner you guys accept that the better.

I agree. White is going to continue to be a major factor and nothing short of injury will change that. I think game script dictated White's early usage last night. I would assume Sony will be more like he was the previous week which was the early down back. This is also, what, his 4th game? He's being trusted quite a bit by a coach like BB this early on.

James white started last night if you noticed on the opening drive. He was heavily targeted in the first quarter. 5 weeks of good to very good PPR performances means he’s game script independent. They are only rostering 2 rbs so that makes it even more obvious.

They're going to roster more than two by next week I'd bet. But yeah, last night they went with two, which was odd, because they really probably didn't need that extra guy that helps out on special teams or too much depth.
Indy was pretty banged up.

It makes sense that Michel gets involved more in the passing game. If Michel is a threat to catch passes, the defense has a harder job defending the play. When White is in there, it's clear he's going out on a route.

This is a valid point. No way does Michel inherit the pass catching role. But Michel will absolutely see more targets going forward, because that makes it tougher on a defense if Michel is a dual threat. Both White and Michel have upper tier RB2 value going forward. Anyone watch Gordon's touchdown carefully today? (I watched it about ten times.) At one point when Brady is moving in the pocket, Michel is in the flat, just waiting for a quick swing pass to walk about twenty yards downfield and instead, Brady sacks up and takes his shot to Gordon.
We might be talking about a twenty to twenty six or so point day, standard. There's nobody within fifteen yards of Michel.

Ya, I noticed that too. Michel seemed to lollygag/take his time when heading out into the flat, he must have been the absolute last read on that playcall. Not sure if Brady saw him or not, I think Brady is mad at him for dropping that pass in week 3, seriously.

Yeah, he dropped a couple.
They did run that little gadget screen to him last night, though. That was sort of sweet. The Colts flooded to White.
eta* I think Brady actually saw him, but with respect to Brady last night, you could tell he was looking -- even first read -- at times for Gordon (I roster Gordon) but it wasn't there. Eventually, he forced one and Gordon won the jump ball.

This feels just like last season with Dion, only enhanced with no Burkhead around. Dion is a good pass catching RB but was barely used in passing game until last few weeks of the season. I would anticipate same thing happening here with Michel's work in passing game increasing as we go, but probably sooner because right now NE is very predictable.
I don't know snap counts last night for NE players but entering last night's game Michel ran the ball 71% of downs he was playing and was targeted in the passing game another 7% of the time. When Michel is in the game the ball had been going to him 78% of the time. I can't recall where I read this the other day and I don't recall exact number but I think the stat was something along the lines of when Michel is in the game and Brady lines up under center it's a run to Michel over 80% of the time. Maybe this has to do with Michel missing so camp, but I do believe we'll see NE address the predictable nature of his usage as the season goes along.

If that's what he does, then yes. I've noticed that while he looks a little lost out there, Gordon isn't embarrassing himself trying to run other routes. There have always been better tacticians than him -- and it's why the comparisons to a Randy Moss aren't exactly correct -- but he's running square ins and comeback routes when he's out there, though I guess a comeback is a derivation of a go.

Gordon's going to take awhile to learn this playbook. I think NE happy to have him in there as long as he stays sober and has a good attitude.

No doubt. Everyone is talking about how quickly he's picking it up, but he's physically dominant and only played twenty snaps last night. Contrast that with Dorsett, who played forty-three. The proof is in the pudding about the playbook.
Still, Michel will benefit from his presence because the defenses can't stack boxes with only Hogan and the dink-and-dunk game they've featured for years, albeit successfully.

There was a piece on one of the pre-game shows right after the trade happened that discussed this... something about the language of the CLE offense being very similar to NEP... going back to a Charlie Weiss connection?

Read that back when they made the trade but what I read the connection was Haley who is from the Parcell's tree.
Only problem with that theory is Gordon may not have known Haley's playbook all that well, since he barely practiced or played.

I've said a lot of positive things about Michel in this thread, and for good reason. To throw a little cold water on the subject, I was listening to Chris Harris talk about Sony Michel today and he said that Michel doesn't yet have that Alvin Kamara quality he'd seen on tape in the past. Harris thinks that Michel doesn't look fast yet. Thinking about this, I'm unphased. The situation and the explosive offense he's playing on are just too good to be concerned about Michel right now.

Thanks for posting, man.
I will say this as a bit of a contra position, and I only only roster him in redraft, so I have less fidelity to him than others who may chime in and have rostered him.
He just had knee surgery. That takes a while. If we're talking strict redraft, then yeah, that's relevant; if it's keeper or dynasty, then look out, because he looks spry to me, if not totally explosive. Plus, he's got that opportunity.
Did Harris talk about his days at Georgia?

Harris is with Matt Waldman on Michel's college film: they both believe that Michel rivals Sequon in key areas. My son and I are both Michel owners in dynasty, so we're stoked.

Harris loved him at UGA and regularly comped him to Kamara but has since said he does not see any Kamara in his NFL tape.

Maybe BB plans to give Michel a lot of work Sunday night and he's saving him? These projected shootouts rarely live up to the hype... perhaps the Pats will try to slow the game down, win it 24-21 something like that.
They'll get shredded by KC (again) if it's a shootout.

I'll be watching closely to see if they involve him more in the passing game, right now its way too obvious what the pats are doing with the RB they have on the field (White = pass, Sony = run). I doubt that's what Bill or Josh want.

I think KC can score easily on New England. NE knows that, and while I hate predicting game scripts, I do think NE will try to slow the game down with the run.
