RB Sony Michel (3 Viewers)

I thought once he took over the job down the stretch and ran well that he might open some eyes for next year - thinking like a Houston might be interested. And teams like that still might, but probably just as JAG/depth with a chance to emerge if things break well.

Of course, the same can be said for most FA RBs - the position just isn't valued that highly any more. It's possible that Rashaad Penny of all people could get the most on the open market given that he seems to offer more explosiveness at the position than others.

I strongly suspect Houston will draft a RB. They’ve screwed around with retreads for a couple seasons & none of them have really worked out. 

Penny might be an intriguing fit. His injury history is concerning.

Should be a complementary piece in a backfield and paid as such. Think Chris Carson or a bit less of a contract.

When healthy, Carson is a 3-down back, capable of a feature role.

the knock on Carson is that injuries are starting to mount.

Carson is a very underrated RB. Always has been.

I also think Houston will draft an RB, but they could still do so and have a guy like Michel in the mix. It won't cost a team much to sign just about all of these FA RBs - it's a buyer's market for that position and the days of big RB contracts are probably in the past for all but a select few.

I've ben under the impression Buffalo has been looking for some speed at RB since last offseason. They signed Breida and there was a rumor right before the draft that they were targeting Etienne with their 1st, but he didn't make it. I think it would make sense considering their current RBs are both mid-4.6 guys, and look like it on the field. 

Maybe they are looking more for a workhorse/grinder. If that's the case, Michel makes some sense. I see someone like Penny or Edmonds as better fits if they are going for more explosiveness at RB.

They did bring in Breida, but they really only had Singletary and Moss so they had to sign somebody else and probably thought he'd give them a little more speed. They barely used him though despite being pretty effective with his touches.

They loved Moss (they actually tried to trade up for him), but he obviously hasn't panned out. I think they want a guy who can grind out games late in the season/playoffs when the weather turns, and take some punishment off of Allen, especially in the red zone. In that epic playoff game vs. KC, part of the reason their D was completely gassed is because they had no running game (besides Allen) and were dominated in time of possession.

Yeah, that's the Twitter and valuation narrative, but not really. New coaches, new usage patterns. All that. Melvin isn't going to continue to lead that team in carries. Somebody is going to take the load off of Williams. His style prevents him from being a back that doesn't need to be spelled. He runs to contact.

Yes, sure, of course, but Javonte owners would much prefer that someone to not also be a very talented RB capable of busting one to the house on any carry as Gordon showed he was still very capable of.

It also makes handcuffing impossible in redraft if Gordon stays.

I wouldn’t describe it as a “threat“ like say, Gordon oils be. I was more responding to the notion that Sony would be the “thunder“, which implies GL touches. If I were a Carter Owner, I would not appreciate that development at all.

I don’t think it’s that much of a concern. Only if indeed he becomes a short yardage back, which isn’t really his forte anyway.

Henderson lost his job to Sony, had nothing to do with health. Just the way the timing worked out but they were frustrated with Henderson's inablity to practice, being dinged up, and pace and consistency of the offense. Henderon's just a COP,  not a third down back, just a COP.

Sure looked good when he was healthy. And that wheel route in the super bowl was a reception light years beyond Sony’s capacity.

I'm probably in the minority, but I thought Gordon was the better RB last year vs. Williams, and that was the reason he was the leader of the committee. Much lower rate of getting stuffed, and better YPC and YPR than Javonte. So I think there's a decent chance Gordon is back and gets a similar workload. Javonte definitely is ascending, while Gordon is descending, but it won't happen as fast as a lot of people want it to IMO. Still Javonte averaged something like 12.5 carries and 3+ targets a game with Gordon only missing one start, Not terrible workload, and room to improve. But I agree that reasonable people probably aren't assuming a huge increase in touches either way. 

Not a Javonte hater, and I have him in a couple leagues and love his explosiveness. He is fun to watch. But the top 5 RB valuation is just a bridge too far for me. I am not seeing that valuation in any of my leagues like I am seeing it on Twitter/KTC/Reddit etc.

You are not wrong. Well, maybe a little, Henderson being dinged up opened the door for Sony, so it had something to do with health. But the Rams were already seeming fed up with Henderson not performing as the starter.

But then Sony hardly touched the ball in the postseason, so it seems like Sony lost his job to a Henderson/Akers duo.

A healthy Akers/Henderson combo is more dynamic than what Sony brings to the table. He filled in admirably - he did not wow anyone with his play.

Dolphins signed RB Sony Michel, formerly of the Rams.

Michel, 27, appeared in all 17 games for the Rams last season, taking over as starter after Darrell Henderson went down with injury, and holding the gig until Cam Akers returned in the playoffs. Michel posted a respectable 208-845-4 rushing line but now joins a very crowded Dolphins backfield that now includes Michel, Chase Edmonds, Raheem Mostert, and Myles Gaskin. Good luck trying to decipher this group for fantasy purposes.

He was a very helpful pickup, but I've been actively trying to move him for a future pick.   I was kind of hoping for a nice backup spot (Chargers before they took Spiller, maybe even Saints or Ravens).   Initial impression of this signing was ish, his value has completely tanked.   And based on the open trade offers from before the signing that haven't been jumped on, I can only assume leaguemates are reading it the same way.   

Disgusting cluster of humanity that it is, I suppose there is a universe where he becomes the "hot hand" for a game if/when Mostert goes down.  Was Myles Gaskin not a semi-effective runner, or am I giving him way too much credit based on fantasy production?   Seems like he was competent, but nothing special.   Considering this was pretty much Michel's calling card on the Rams, I fear that it would still be RBBC hell even if Mostert goes down.   Maybe if McDaniel is following the SF template, we get that one game with high volume that opens a trade window to a RB desperate team that doesn't know better.

IMO there’s no road to 200 carries in Miami. Mostert, Edmonds (who they went out and got the second FA started), Gaskin, and a couple other dudes cloud the picture too much. 

He was brought in as a depth player, long after Edmonds and even Mostert.

Color me extremely skeptical he even totes the rock 150x.

Gaskins was competent but that’s about it. He’d get what was blocked but didn’t have a ton of burst or power. Somehow he did put up decent fantasy stats and it wasn’t from any crazy unsustainable volume.

I fear that Mostert will be given his chance to run himself into the ground early if he has fully recovered.   History would say that's exactly what he'll do, but who knows.

If Mostert is the only thing that's really in the way of Michel forming a 1-2 punch with Edmonds, that's not such a bad environment.   But if it's Edmonds in the passing game and then a pure clusterbleep of Michel, Gaskin, ZaQuandre White -after- assuming Mostert can't stay healthy, then I have to really ask myself what it is that I'm hoping for from this situation.    I think the answer is probably that he is the best of this bunch, and will pick up some value if/when Mostert exits the picture.   However, right now it's such a messy situation that there seems to be next to zero value for Sony Michel at this moment.

You’re correct though that they’re all pretty fragile, and there’s a greater than zero chance that Sony get a run at some point. 

That said, it’s hard to predict, and Sony is not without his own injury history.

That’s one way to look at it.

I wouldn’t, because his track record of injury is pretty lengthy, and I don’t completely trust the HC to not go full on RBBC - just don’t know his tendencies yet. 

But if I needed a flex/BYE week back, Edmonds isn’t a bad dart throw.
