"Rebuilding for the future" is an incomplete phrase (1 Viewer)

Can't remember who said this, but as I get older I'm believing its a truism.

Rebuilding teams are going to suck. Seems a lock that any coach that doesn't win right away gets canned.

Marv Levy, and the quote was:

"When you say you're building for the future, that's an incomplete sentence. You're building for the future coach and general manager, is what you're doing."

Thanks. Do you feel its a true assessment of "rebuilding"?

I keep thinking of this quote in reference to Seattle possibly drafting a "future" QB in the coming draft.
It really depends on the franchise. Some ownerships will stick with a coach / GM long enough to give them a chance to see through what they are trying to accomplish. Others are in a constant state of turnover. We can generalize, and generally ownerships are an impatient lot, so I guess I'd agree.I think in the case of Seattle though, ownership (Paul Allen) understands the value of continuity. They didn't dump Holmgrem whenever he had a bad W/L record. It happens sometimes. They also prepared for a smooth transition from Holmgren to Mora, bringing him before Holmgrem retired. They also stuck 8 years with former President of Football Operations Whitsitt before finally going with Ruskell. So, if Seattle makes a commitment, they generally stick with it, and the Levy quote is not as relevant.

Good points. Makes me want to count my blessings having Paul Allen as the owner of my home team.
