and Slumdog was worthy of it's Best Picture Oscar. Manipulated to appeal to a greater audience, but it seems that's the way "awards" type films with have been for at least the last 10 years.
I preferred Doubt, Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader, WALL-E, and The Dark Knight.
2008 was an incredibly good year for movies!I agree with your recommendations above, except for Vicky Cristina Barcelona, which was terrible.

I'd also add from that year: Frozen River and In Bruges.

I think Slumdog deserved the win.
Vicky Christina Barcelona was definitely lightweight. It just worked for me.

That's a great pair of movies. I seem to remember FR not getting much love here, but I thought it was great. In Bruges was much more accepted, but still short of the acknowledgement it deserved.
In Bruges was awesome.

Slumdog is average and not even one of Boyle's bests. The Reader was the best picture that year and it was a shame Fiennes wasn't even given acknowledgement for his fine work in it. He has a good year with that and In Bruges.2007 was one of the most incredible years for movies ever and was far better than the picturs affected by the writers strike in '08. There Will Be Blood, Atonement, Juno, Michael Clayton, Eastern Promises, Away From Her, Into the Wild, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, No Country for Old Men, Once and 3:10 to Yuma.

Revolutionary Road got a lot of press. But of the two Winslet movies, I thought The Reader was better. And yes, 2007 was a stellar year. I'm not a fan of Juno, but I liked all the other movies you mentioned. 2007's No Country and The Diving Bell and the Butterfly are on my top 50 all time favorites. Aside from the ones you mentioned, there was also The Lives of Others, The Bourne Ultimatum, Zodiac, The King of Kong, Sunshine, The Darjeeling Limited, Eastern Promises, and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.

Diving Bell is on the way for Tuesday been wanting to see it for quite awhile. The other movies (outside of The Lives of Others and The King of Kong which will now be added to my queue) I have seen and are also fantastic. Just a spectacular year in general.

The Lives of Others and King of Kong are both great movies. Big fan.

So far a disappointing summer.
Enjoyed Losers, Ironman 2 and Robin Hood.. and since Summer "officially" start this weekend I'd say that is a good start.
Your bar must be set a little lower than mine. :lmao:

Excited about Inception and Toy Story 3, but that's about it. Sadly, I am sure that I'll drop my money on Predators, but I don't have high hopes.

I have a sneaky suspicion that Predators is going to be good.

I liked the trailer and Paul W.S. Anderson isn't directing it (HUGE plus). Rodriguez is hit and miss for me but I'll probably give it a shot.

Enjoyed the Losers, Ironman 2 was OK, not seeing Robin Hood.Only movie I am really looking forward to is Inception. I had hopes when the first trailers of Knight and Day, looked funny. But the latest trailers are not...Also will probably see Predator

It took me a while to get through it all but I finally finished Eraserhead Definately one of the weirdest movies I've ever seen but for some reason I enjoyed it. Not something I would recommend or ever plan to watch again but I'll give it a 2/5.

The Lovely Bones was extremely well acted and directed and it had a great dream like feel to it all. There was a bit too much of the fantasyland scenes but it was still a solid 3/5.

Anderson's a hack, for sure.

My Bar is very low... I go to a movie to be entertained.. if I can leave the theater feeling entertained then I'm good. action type films are my guilty pleasure.. 2012 is still a Very fun film for me.. Over the top? but that is what makes it entertaining to me.Speaking of upcoming movies.. I agree on inception and Toy story 3.. But also Looking forward to "Salt" and "Knight and Day" ..

"last Airbender" is on my "maybe" list as well as dumb but looks funny "Grown Ups"..

and last but not least August 13th.. The Expendables ! :excited: ;)

Youth In Revolt: Getting really sick of Micheal Cera. His 'alter ego' in this movie was great but good lord is his regular shtick played out. A couple hilarious scenes in an otherwise forgettable movie. 1.5/5

I forgot what the general consensus was here about the movie but I really enjoyed The Informant!. I loved the first hour and it did start to drag on a bit but overall I thought it was funny even though there weren't huge laughs.

3/5

Joe Bryant posted a review on this site and said he didn't like it. However, I thought it was very entertaining. Plus, it was weird and unique - and that's always worth a few points in my book. The non-sequitur voiceover was particularly funny at certain points.

Caught The Believer with Ryan Gosling playing a jewish skinhead/anti-semite. Amazing performance by him, but a pretty silly movie otherwise. Billy Zane fer chrissakes.

Bronson - Tom Hardy was fantastic. I think he will emerge as one of the greats down the road. This movie didn't get much play and I can understand why. Reminded me a little of a stripped down version of A Clockwork Orange without offering the rhyme or reason behind the mood swings and violence of Charlie Bronson. Very crazy movie to say the least. Well worth at least one viewing as long as you can handle some male nudity.

Five Easy Pieces - Jack Nicholson is just fantastic. This movie started out slow and I didn't know where it was heading but by the time he reunites with his past we are finally given the true rebel in the main character Bobby. Great movie.

Bronson looks really cool based on the trailer. I know Five Easy Pieces is a classic. But as well made as it is, I am not a fan.

It's very slow, it really isn't for everybody. I related to the main character so I liked it a lot. Bronson is every bit as violent and crazy as the trailer gives you a preview of. Don't expect much logic or reasoning behind the madness. It was a fun watch for myself though and as previously stated Tom Hardy is awesome.

Sweet. The main character seems very charismatic.

Interesting... very similar vibe, IMO, as Woman Under the Influence which, IIRC, you didn't love either. A kind of going nowhere pacing that puts you in the room for all the uncomfortable moments probably longer than you'd like to be in real life. I can appreciate somebody not getting into either of them, but I love both films- took Nicholson's performance in Five Easy Pieces in the Great Works draft acting category (as well as Rowlands, IIRC).

So I still have to finish the last scene- I think- of Where the Wild Things Are. Supremely well made version of a 5-7 year olds subconscious, from the writing to the art direction to the pacing/editing. The initial domestic scenes are incredibly well written, acted and directed- I don't remember hte book at all, but I'm guessing the family scenes didn't play as prominent a part in the book. As much love as I'm giving it, I still am left a little ... dispassionate about it. Not sure why I didn't find myself caring much, but I didn't.

You are correct. I didn't enjoy A Woman Under The Influence, either. I appreciate the craftsmanship, though.

Lovely Bones- Thought it was alright. Wahlberg wasn't that bad.

District 9- I need District 10

The Road- Stark, and depressing. Well acted.

Perfect Getaway- Figured it out early on. Milla is a stunner though.

Saw The Road last night. That was a fun watch :lmao:

I wanted to shoot myself at the end of it and I'm typically the happy-go-lucky guy in the crowd.

three months following the birth of my son, the wife and i finally got out to a movie. it was kind of a date even. the dearth of decent films on the market left us a little disappointed. settled on kind of comic "please give" with indie fave catherine keener, oliver platt and the lovely amanda peet. it wasn't much of a film but it was more about the characters than anything. for whatever reason, i tend to confuse the director - nicole holofcener ("friends with money")- with another indie director who does similar movies lisa cholodenko ("laurel canyon", "high art"). i kind of do the same thing with jane campion and sally potter. i get their films mixed up in my head.

This is the first time your movie taste has disappointed me. My favorite Nicholson movie of all-time.

The more I talk film with people the more surprised I am at how these great movies still divide people. When you love a film, it's almost inconceivable that everyone doesn't love it. One of my favorite critics is Mick Lasalle. He writes for the San Francisco Chronicle. He's a good writer, but the funny thing is I almost never agree with him.

We were all discussing that this summer is weak so far. Matt Damon's The Adjustment Bureau could be interesting.
i think this and nolan's "inception" could be some of the more interesting films this summer.
Here's a complete list of upcoming movies. These all have potential:

Get Him to the Greek

Toy Story 3

The Killer Inside Me

Love Ranch

The Last Airbender

Predators

Inception

Dinner for Schmucks

Rush: Beyond the Lighted Stage

The Expendables

The Last Airbender
I find the situation around this movie to be hilarious for some reason. Now, I've never watched it mind you, but I was aware that there was a cartoon named Avatar: The Last Airbender. When Avatar came out, I thought "Hmmm, they must have made a movie about that cartoon." It was many months later that I figured out it was a completely different story. Now this movie is coming out, but it can't call itself Avatar, because it's already been done (and for mega bucks in profit). Sucks for those guys. I'd sue James Cameron, but that's just me.

Well, being jewish and a skinhead doesnt make a lot of sense, but I thought Gosling pulled it off and was great. Liked the movie a lot.Gosling is probably the best actor under 30 IMO
