American Me....Early 90's gang movie starring and directed by Edward James Olmos. Solid, but unspectacular. Lacks the dialogue of great gangster movies. Olmos was around 45 when this was made (and looked even older), yet in parts of the movie was playing a 20 something yr old version of his character, so you could argue he was miscast, although he has a strong performance in AM. Best part of the movie are the scenes from prison, some of which are fairly graphic yet realistic. Despite only going on 2 dates with EJO, the movie attempts to make you believe she fell in love with him, which felt quite far fetched. William Forsythe was good in a supporting role as EJO's #1 man in the gang, and something you dont see him typically take on so that was cool. Overall decent, but cant say anything better than an average gang movie....6.4/10
Well it did have more butt sex than almost any other Hollywood movie. On a side note several consultants on the movie were believed to be killed by Mexican mafiosa and EJO received multiple death threats (he was even granted a conceal carry permit because of this film).

Personally I remember it being a fascinating movie...even with all the butt sex.
Yeah, I liked it for the fact that there's never really been a movie like this made from the Mexican gang perspective - in jail and on the outside (or at least Ive never seen one)

Blood In Blood Out (Bound By Honor) 1993 was a pretty solid movie with a similar theme around Mexican gangs.I think it was a heck of a movie and well worth checking out.

Yeah. Just another overrated "classic". Dull story about a total loser.

And Scorsese might be a great director but the stories he chooses to direct are nearly universally lousy, IMHO.
Yeah. Pretty much the worst movie ever.

Monster's Ball...Saw this around when it came out, but didnt remember much outside of Halle Berry getting the business. Liked it more than I remembered, although a couple things distract me from really liking it. First, the movie feels like it is based in circa 1980 or so, but certain hints (cars made in the 90s, for one) show it was supposed to be taking place around when it was made, 2000. Also, I cant get around how Billy Bob's character goes from being a black-hating racist, to Halle Berry's lover. Now, the argument could be made that because of the similar tragedies both he and Halle went through brings them together, but Billy Bob overall personality/beliefs go through a drastic change in a short period outside of that relationship as well. Its more believable than people in Crash all of a sudden understanding racism, or Clint in Gran Torino all of a sudden wanting to help an Asian boy, but I still couldnt totally believe the transformation of the character despite him undergoing a reawakening of sorts. Outside of those 2 things, the movie is shot beautifully and has great performances all around. Peter Boyle and Heath Ledger steal every scene they are in, and its not surprising this was the role that really put Ledger on the map as a legit actor......7/10
Halle Berry is really ####### hot. HTH.

Love that movie, and I just mentioned it in the "infinitely rewatchable movies" thread.VATOS LOCOS FOREVER, CARNAL.

black dynamite - if you liked 70s movies like shaft, superfly & coffy, impressively conceived and executed blaxploitation homage, and pretty funny...

saw a couple hotel movies on vacation (san diego zoo & sea world)...

shutter island - liked it...

SPOILER

compared to ninth configuration... also somewhat reminiscent of angel heart and the mechanic (riffing on protagonist as unwitting bad guy)

SPOILER OUTRO

book of eli - didn't like this so much, imo pretty forgettable... waste of denzel washington...

standing in the shadows of motown - maybe the best music documentary i've ever seen... the funk brothers, unsung heroes of countless motown hits, finally get their due (posthumously in some cases)... outstanding tribute concert interspersed with interesting vignettes about the history of motown and the musicians who were instrumental in the labels's massive success, in their own words... master bassist james jamerson had a huge influence on james brown, sly stone's larry graham, p-funk's bootsy collins, miles michael henderson, and thereby, the history of funk... his playing was so in the pocket, it was like one of those pants that has a pocket INSIDE the pocket! :) one thing that shined through is a reason they played so well together is that they genuinely liked each other and functioned as much as a family as a band. the marvin gaye song what's goin on was a highlight, there are like ten instruments, nobody plays on top of each other, and you can hear all of them... sent chills up my spine... the musicians still had their chops and were a tight ensemble, despite not having played together in decades... i always remembered motown for the routinely brilliant vocals, mournfully universal lyrics, and the simple melodic hooks... this movie forced me to reevaluate how sophisticated the music was, in effortlessly melding many genres (soul, blues, jazz, funk, pop, etc)... highest possible recommendation...

straight, no chaser - on thelonious monk (by producer of gimme shelter & exec produced by clint eastwood, who directed bird), one of the three towering figures in the history of post-bop in the second half of the 20th century (with miles and coltrane)... lots of outstanding concert footage, as well as offstage interviews, with family, associates, musicians, which reveals (painfully at times), how razor thin the line between genius and madness can be...

'round midnight - riveting, touching, naturalistic, unaffected performance and brilliant, haunting sax work by first time actor, the late dexter gordon, loosely based on life of ex-pat pianist bud powell in europe... like miles and coltrane, he wrestled with demons (ie - heroin addiction) in his life, and the redemption of making it to the other side, and the indomitable spirit and will exemplified by their lives and presence, pours out of nearly every note like a tidal wave of emotion (like eminent sociologist bootsy presciently pointed out with his pinnochio theory, if you fake the funk, your nose gots to grow)... on the bonus plan, i think an oscar wining score by herbie hancock, includes as backing musicians most of the legendary fellow miles sidemen from the 60's (wayne shorter, ron carter, tony williams, john mclaughlin, along with the great freddie hubbard).

Cool movie, and fun to see these virtuoso musicians acting in bit parts. Dexter Gordon is the ####.

The Deer Hunter was one of the first Vietnam movies I ever saw, and it had a big impact on me. After having seen the other two big time Vietnam movies (Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket), I think Deer Hunter is a step down from those films. But obviously Deer Hunter is an important film.
Missed this the first time. Solid take, I enjoy Full Metal Jacket (more than Deer Hunter) as a Vietnam movie. On the flip side, IMO the brilliance of Deer Hunter isn't as a Vietnam movie, but rather as a slice-of-life film that explores the before and after of war veterans (more in the spirit of The Best Years of Our Lives). The Vietnam stuff could have been cut down by 50%, because the story truly is more about how their lives change post-war. (even though most people fixate on 1 or 2 famous scenes that are Vietnam focused)

I think we're the only people who saw that... although I saw it when it was called Twinkle Twinkle Killer Kane- so the "spoilers" probably aren't necessary. I had the exact same comment.So- at what point did you make the comparison? There was something in the initial scene to me- on the boat- that made me think of Twinkle, and took all the suprise out of the movie for me.

She gets topless in Brokeback Mountain. So does Michelle Williams

I know it's not a movie, but I've been watching 30 Rock and am very surprised by how funny it is. Usually laugh out loud a couple times a show, which is rare for me.

Going to put in Crazy Heart tonight, and will be watching Shutter Island on Tuesday when it comes.

Finally went out and picked up a couple of blu-ray players. I decided to watch Avatar as my first disc.

Great visuals, stupid movie. 2/5

Never saw this movie youre talking about, but I never thought about the Angel Heart comparison. Good one, and love that movie as well. Definitely in my Mickey Rourke Top 5.

I remember Deer Hunter having several excellent scenes. But I also recall some disjointed direction.

I really like this show. But my hate of that stupid page makes the show unwatchable when he's on screen.

State of Play - 2/5

Meh...crowe character was a little over the top....didn't like the ending. Bateman was good.

Duplicity - 3/5

Moved fast...was a little confusing combined with alcohol...but loved the ending. Giamatti was great as always.

el floppo,it was your review i was recalling (sorry for not mentioning it)...which is why i can't really answer the question, as i had seen your review before watching the movie...i liked how the first stark notes of the score almost sounded like a foghorn, than built in a menacing kind of emotional undertow, foreshadowing the doom to come (reminiscent of bernard hermann's brilliant score for psycho, where i think he went with just strings, no brass, woodwinds or percussion)...on the off chance that this piques interest in the criminally underrated ninth configuration (as it is now called - i think it can be watched in its entirety on you tube)...SPOILER PART IIi liked the fact that in ninth configuration stacey keach (killer kane) was unwittingly role playing the PSYCHOLOGIST! :fishing: and some insightful and at times hilarious dialogue was put in the mouths of the military prisoners... but you were right, the fact that there was an elaborate orchestration at a prison to create a therapeutic environment designed to help a patient remember himself is exactly like ninth configuration... i preferred the first movie, but scorcese was on his game, and a well done psychological thriller in the horror genre... i was tempted to say his first, but the excellent cape fear remake (scorcese?) had elements of horror...as noted, it also reminded me of movies like angel heart and the mechanic...

Jdogg - maybe you've covered this...but how often do you watch movies?
Mrs. Dogg and I get through about two movies per week on Netflix. I go to about two new movies per month in the theater. And with HBO and on demand movies, I usually watch about six to eight per month. I am an addict!

Definitely in my Mickey Rourke Top 5.
some of my favorites...angel heart

pope of greenwich village

diner

johnny handsome

barfly

year of the dragon

sin city

i haven't seen the wrestler, he seems to grunt a lot in ironman 2

* IMDB page, forgot how many heinous movies he has done... i actually knew it was a lot, but not THAT many... i thought he didn't work a lot while boxing, i guess he just wasn't working on anything GOOD...

prayer for the dying was the first one i remember being disappointed in, and than things REALLY went off the rails with the pile of congealing barf that was harley davidson and the marlboro man (makes gigli look like citizen kane :) )...

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000620/

Any Mickey Roarke fan needs to see this scene from The Pledge. Roarke does better work here in a two minute scene than most actors hope to do in a lifetime.

twilight new moon :goodposting: :bag: :X these twilight movies are just bad
I'm always surprised when anyone other than a 13 year old girl watches these movies.
bored and like vampires movies. heard it was better than the first one(figured it had to be since the first one sucked) but i think it was worse
Did you see Daybreakers? Despite mixed reviews, I want to give that a shot just for the excellent cast.

1. Barfly2. Pope of GV3. Wrestler4. Diner5. Rumble Fi#### went downhill starting with that however many weeks later or whatever with Kim Bassinger.

Lars and the Real Girl - really liked this one. Kind of an offbeat, dramatic comedy. Ryan Gosling plays a quiet guy who keeps to himself, until he starts dating a life size doll named Bianca. Plenty of humorous parts come with it, and surprisingly his brother, wife, and the entire town embrace the situation and go along with it. Original and witty screenwriting, Emily Mortimer was good, Gosling was excellent. Not for everybody, but I think most here would like it. 8.2/10
This has been on my Tivo for a while, just watched it. Interesting premise and the acting was pretty good, but I had a hard time buying into the idea that the whole town would play ball like that. 6/10

I forgot to mention that I own about 50 movies that I watch often. So I think you and I are in similar territory.
