Let's just set aside my other beefs and look at the editing. The editing of this movie is terrible. Some scenes end abruptly at times, while others go on and on. I'm surprised this movie was directed by the same man that made Braveheart. Because that is a far superior film.
This I agree with. There is one cut, where it goes from a firefight to a shot of a vacuum cleaner that's so abrupt I physically flinch every time I see it.

Personally, I didn't think it was that great of a film either. I enjoyed the first half of the film, but the 2nd half wasn't very good; mostly because the 2nd half of the film was mostly just Sharon Stone screaming for 45 minutes which made me want to kill her due to how annoying it was. I also find the film to be too long, it was just dragging on for the last 45min or so.
i think the sharon stone stuff kind of took me out of the movie. it could have been another "goodfellas", i think, but for that subplot.
agree completely.
I think Sharon Stone is, in many ways, a bad actor. But I think she nailed this role.
She was fantastic opposite Albert Brooks in a very underrated and great film:The MuseAnd I love Casino. it is a classic.Watched The Wolfman last night (Benito Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins) It was a good monster flick. Very well made.

Ohhh... The Muse. Completely forgot about that one... fun movie, but like most Brooks movies, I'd call it more flawed than "great". Still enjoyable, especially as a rental. And you're right- Stone is particularly good in it.

To all the David Lynch heads out there, I stumbled onto this and while I'm kind of so-so on the work of his I've seen I loved this sound bite:

12 Angry Men (1957) - Very good, especially since it takes place in one room.

Glengarry Glen Ross - Monologues by Alec Baldwin and Al Pacino are the best parts.

Tonight I'll watch Network or the Last King of Scotland for the first time.

Grown Ups

This movie couldn't possibly have had a script. It's the cast sitting around trying to outdo each other with corny one liners. I liked Dugan's Problem Child, Happy Gilmore, and Beverly Hills Ninja, but he's put forth almost no effort since then and continues to make $100 million crap. The only possible redeeming value this film has is that it does make you reminisce about hanging out with your old buddies. But man, am I jealous I can't cash $20 million paychecks for hanging out with my buddies.

1/5

The Other Guys

Ferrell plays a nerd instead of a buffoon. Couple bits had me rolling. Good blend of serious action and comedy. Mark Wahlberg looked ridiculously tiny standing next to Ferrell and playing the tough guy. Decent but I thought Cop Out was the same movie with more laughs.

Robert Altman :P Did I miss it or did no one mention his best, Short Cuts? The Player and Gosford Park are my other favorites.
 Short Cuts never gets enough attention.Alas, manipulative or not, I still dig Spielberg. Haven't rewatched most of the older stuff in ages, but I doubt my opinion would change much.

Pirate Radio Mrs. TRF and I caught the last 30 minutes of it the other night. It was awesome. So we DVR'd it and will watch it this weekend. Can't wait!!!!!!!!!

This movie might very well suck, I haven't seen it. But that scene where Ferrell screams while attacking the suspect cracks me up.

This movie is really fun. Nothing really unique about it - and the one-dimensional British fascist government was over the top. But I sure liked it a lot.

There is a bit at the beginning with Ferrell and Wahlberg jawing at each other that may be the funniest thing I've ever seen from Ferrell.

We Were Soldiers

Meh. That said, is there a more enjoyable actor to watch than Sam Elliott? This guy should be in every movie. All of them. Mel Gibson was solid. But this is a pretty lame effort overall. This movie might have been decent pre-Flags of Our Fathers or pre-Apocalypse Now. But as it stands, it's more like a Michael Bay movie than anything else. Painfully obvious and cliche.
Just curious but what were you expecting? It's based, pretty closely, on the book.Agree with Sam Elliot, I've never seen him in a bad role and that includes Ghostrider.
I was expecting a better script and something other than a bunch of rehashed war movie cliches. If John Wayne had made this movie fifty years ago, it would have been excellent. But in the modern era, we've seen too many excellent war films to let an inferior movie like this slide.
While I don't think it was Royal Shakespeare Theater quality I think WWS was better than all that. Some of the cliches were a little painful to watch and all that but I thought that from a strictly military aspect it presented some unique perspectives and is one of the few battle films that bothered to really lay out and map the events to give the audience a more realistic glimpse of how battles develop. In other words I think they did a very good job lifting the Fog of War for the audience.I also liked the way they included the female characters in the overall story. I thought they had a powerful impact.

So while I agree that there were many cliches that were at times tough to bear (and the ending battle was a little oddly executed) I thought it also had many redeeming elements that make it a worthwhile film to view.
I did enjoy seeing the planning and execution of the battles from both sides. But without having read the book, I will assume that was more about the source material. Including the female characters was a good idea. But how about that scene where the one white wife is just horrified that a black soldier can't have his laundry washed at an all-white laundromat? That was some of the most painful writing and acting I've ever seen in a major film.Let's just set aside my other beefs and look at the editing. The editing of this movie is terrible. Some scenes end abruptly at times, while others go on and on. I'm surprised this movie was directed by the same man that made Braveheart. Because that is a far superior film.

The movie has some redeeming qualities. I think it was very earnest in showing the fear and anxiety of being a soldier. But Full Metal Jacket showed all that and was 100 times better.
Full Metal Jacket >>>> We Were SoldiersFMJ is a full blown masterpiece, I wasn't putting WWS anywhere near that category.

watched Edge of Darkness on demand. say what you will about Mel Gibson off screen, but he has a pretty commanding presence on screen. overall, I liked the movie. some of the plot was a little convoluted, and certain elements were cliched, but it was still pretty good.

and Ray Winstone is one of my favorite underrated actors.

Just got done with After Hours

Not sure what I expected, but I wasn't expecting it to be that dark of a comedy. Great movie experience. Love the claustrophobic feeling you get watching the movie - as if you were trapped with this poor sap in hell for the night too. Maybe got a tad too much at the end, but it's a minor beef. 8/10

i think back to all those movies in the 80's that were built on the premise of "one wild crazy night" and how "after hours" just teases that out to great effect. it is dark and funny but also a pretty keen character analysis of a type played by dunne.

Next up I'll catch up on some Scorsese films here's the list:

Haven't seen:

Mean Streets

King of Comedy

After Hours

Casino

Last Temptation of Christ

Bringing out the Dead

Seen Once/long ago:

Raging Bull

Gangs of New York

I bolded the 3 I had down to watch. Is there another on the 'haven't seen' list that is a must watch?
Mean Streets, King of Comedy, and especially Casino are all must watches IMO. Bringing Out The Dead I dont think is must watch, but worth watching. Id watch any of those 4 before re-watching Raging Bull (which I personally didnt like much at all).

...Also, as far as the previews before the movie go, The Fighter looks like its going to be great and Christian Bale looks poised for an almost surefire Oscar nom and possible win.
Cant wait to see this, I think Im definitely going to check it out sometime this weekend. Bale looks like he put in his best performance since American Psycho and already got nominated for the Golden Globe BSA. Surprisingly, Wahlberg also got nominated so maybe all you Wahlberg haters here will realize he's got some talent. .....I also want to see True Grit, but Im a little concerned the Coen's made it PG13 instead of R. Yeah, theyve succeeded at PG13 before with Raising Arizona and O Brother, Where Art Thou?, but True Grit + Coens feels like it should be an R-rated movie and I hope the violence isnt dulled down so they could make it PG13 and maybe hit the box office bigger. Surprised this didnt get any GG nominations, so that might be telling.

Not concerned in the least about the rating, the original was G, so they probably just didn't add the abundance of cursing we are used to. The violence they can get away with in PG-13 movies is really surprising sometimes, (Think Bourne movies) and there are only a couple short gunfights in the story, all with dudes wearing heavy western clothing so its not like there is much opportunity for blood baths anyways.I think the only difference between this and a R rated version would be a couple F bombs and a gruesome head shot or two. I doubt most people will notice.

Yeah, youre probably right. I still think it looks good, surprised it didnt get any sort of nomination, actors or otherwise.

Oh, it will, when the awards that matter come around.

Did the Golden Globe nominees come out, or is that still coming up?

Some of my favorite western films are pretty tame. Love all the Clint Eastwood westerns. So the PG-13 isn't worrisome to me. For some reason, I really don't like a bunch of violence in my westerns.

Not sure how many signs a trailer can reveal that a movie is ####, but this one screams "####!" with every frame. They might as well have called this "TOTAL #### MOVIE #4,892." They could have showed people protesting outside the production with signs that read, "WARNING!!! THIS MOVIE SUCKS," and it wouldn't have mattered, because it's obvious ####tiness would have glowed like a #### candle on National #### Day.

By the way, how did the movie get one star? Was there a really cool special effect that refunds your money at the end?

Yeah, the more Ive thought about this the last few hours Im hoping the dialogue isnt toned down and thats why its PG13 as opposed to the violence.

Saw Iron man 2.

One of the worst sequels in a while. Too bad as I really liked the original.

I had low expectations and it was still worse than I thought.

I did like Mickey Rourke as the villian.

I'm always surprised to hear this - despite the fact that a lot of people agree with you. I thought the sequel was exactly as good as the first movie - which I thoroughly enjoyed.

It's a good popcorn flick. Not up to the standards of the film snobs in this thread, but I'm a contrarion, I watch the dumb flicks and enjoy them:)
Dude, I totally love dumb flicks. I have no shame :loco:

The Big Blue by Luc Besson - Absolutely incredible. His best work, yes, even better than Fifth Element. Only gripe was when I found out the American ending was an add on to make the audiences feel good. It was still powerful.

Me too. I felt the same way when people derided Spiderman 3. :scared:
