Continuing the "let's make each other watch movies we love" thing, Mr. krista4's next selection for me was Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia.

Other than Kris Kristofferson in a good rapey role, someone please explain why I should have liked this movie.
Can you unpack this...thx.
What was unclear about Krista's description? His character gets his rape on, what more do you need to know?

If it was statutory or a good regular raping, ofc.

peckinpah is a weird director, i think. alternately great films like "the wild bunch" and then there films like this and "straw dogs" or "cross of iron" which are terrible. i like warren oates because he's a good character actor but not enough to watch this movie again.

I loved The Wild Bunch. Warren Oates is great, but this movie was so incredibly boring. At one point I said to Mr. krista4, "she isn't going to bring out the guitar again, is she?" and he confirmed she would. Should have turned it off then. I'm glad to hear you didn't like it either; was worried that you or another whose tastes I admired would have liked it.

Watched Salt last night.

Ehh. 1.5 / 5

I usually suspend belief for the sake of actions movies but this movie was just ridiculous. Watch it and you'll see what I mean.

Jolie is hot as always --- if you are into Jolie that is.
I have to agree. I go into these movies with the right mindset and am totally prepared to accept their reality but this one was just silly and not from a plausibility standpoint but the fact that there is false drama created when there are disgustingly obvious resolutions to the fabricated situations that the filmmakers completely ignore. And does every film released have to be a set up for a trilogy? I mean not every character is worthy of a franchise and Salt is definitely in the "We're not worthy" category.

It really isn't very good.

I didn't pay close enough attention to my Netflix queue and wound up having Kick-### sent to me. I didn't really want to see it until some good reviews in this thread. I had it for over a month before finally checking it out...and I'm glad I did. Much better than expected. I like Nicholas Cage in the goofy roles. Good concept, good story, great fight scenes. 3/5

the other thing about "bring me the head..." is how, well, ugly the film looks. i don't know the version that you saw but it just didn't look good. watched "the damned united" last night. not a great film by any stretch but this was a good role for an actor like michael sheen. he often plays the same role in films and it was nice to see him straying from that a bit here. i also dig his turn on "30 rock" for that same reason. anyway, i'm sure that it could have been a different movie with more attention given to the football instead of the interpersonal relationships but i liked it just fine.

Watched The Sorcerer's Apprentice last night.

The Rotten Tomatoes consensus says:

It has a likable cast and loads of CGI spectacle, but for all but the least demanding viewers, The Sorcerer's Apprentice will be less than spellbinding.
So, I guess I'm not very demanding, because I thought it was pretty good. :goodposting:

I didn't like this one much either. It reminded me of a 70s Euro movie - not much dialogue and lots of closeups. I'm still not sure if it was trying to be artsy or what. Maybe I just didn't get it. Some seriously hot ladies in it, though.

Rocky Balboa

All of the Rocky movies are the same. This one was in line w/ the rest. I doubted it would be worth a crap...just as I did for all of the others. Then came the "rocky moment". We all know it. We all wait for it. We all love it. Yes, this is a great flick. I'm a better man for watching it.

Yes, I over did the review. I did, however, enjoy watching it.

3/5.
Disagree. The first was an incredibly well done film on every level. Rocky II was enjoyable but it is where the franchise started becoming a commercial enterprise. Rocky III was fun from a "I want to see some action" perspective, which it delivered, but everything after that was total garbage. But the original Rocky was a phenomenal film and should not be dismissed, nor categorized with the others in the franchise.
I liked Rocky Balboa - IMO it's the best Rocky film since the original. But I can see where those who like III/IV the best wouldn't like this one as much. It's a much quieter movie than those and there's not as much action.

I loved Rocky Balboa as well. Very retro to the vibe of the first one.

My rankings

1) Rocky

2) Rocky III

3) Rocky IV

4) Rocky Balboa

5) Rocky II

I refuse to acknowledge they ever made Rocky V. Insane how bad that movie was. A disgrace to the brand.

Comedian Patton Oswalt stars as reclusive, troubled NY Giants fan. Written and directed by Robert Siegel - the write of The Wrestler. Very good movie. Thumbs up. The trashy, suntanned, breast-enhanced wife of his brother is worth the price of admission alone.
I enjoyed this movie.Anyone see Greenberg with Stiller in it. I have not watched the whole thing but I'm not sure if I hated it or enjoyed it

Haven't seen Greenberg yet. But despite some high critical praise, that movie doesn't look very good to me.

It's subtle with the humor, does have some chuckle moments but overall from what I saw it was a bit boring.I need to watch the complete movie until I pass full judgement but it's probably not good.

It is absolutely horrible. Shut it off after 45 minutes.

Skyline - Anyone involved in the making of this movie should never be allowed to make movies. I'd rather be kicked in the nuts 10 times than watch this piece of crap again.

City Island - Andy Garcia in a comedy about an extremely dysfunctional family in the Bronx. Their lies to each other grow and grow until they finally hit a tipping point. Very entertaining movie (81% on RT).

I enjoyed Greenberg. It's not great but it's enjoyable. I find that I generally enjoy the less over-the-top work of guys like Stiller and Sandler more than most of their big budget work. But I really did not like Big Fan. Decent premise, tedious execution.

Not a fan of this one at all... I rememer digging the choppy, quick editing, but that was about it. Pretty sure I turned it off (Garcia's Head, not the Wild Bunch, which is fantastic).

Agora... anybody?

Seemed a movie without a clear aim that the director (same guy as The Others) did his best to constantly both expand and reel in (narratively, at least)- had too many micro and macro stories going at once for my liking. It was a beautifully filmed movie with some amazing art-direction- sets/costumes and probably CG after effects. Maybe because it's an international cast directed by a Spaniard, the acting didn't come across so well (probably hard to get full control over actors when it's not in the mother tongue... at least I'd think so) and despite my absolute  of Rachel Weisz, I didn't think this was one of her best. But if you like period pieces (this is set in Alexandria 4th C AD) and/or strong female protagonists, and/or historical/religious films- this is worth the watch. Not fantastic, but it does a great job immersing you in the feel of that place and time.

So- Black Swan...

good, but not great for me.

I felt like the story line wasn't terribly original or interesting (life immitating art... ok, I get it) and there were a couple things that really bothered me- like, distractingly bothered me: the flappy arm choreography that kept going on and on and on throughout the entire movie (alright, it's Swan Lake, but give it a rest already) and sound editing, particularly around Portman's breathing- too much.

Still... this is a very, very worthwhile movie- beautifully shot and conceived, fairly well acted, and I genuinely appreciate the ambiguity in the ending (at least, to me it's ambiguous- maybe it's clear to everybody else?). I really liked Cassell in this too.

Look-at-me-sidebar.... I had a stretch where I was wierdly immersed in City Ballet (the company and theater where Swan takes place/emulates). A very gb was dating (and now married to one of the dancers), I was seeing another quite a bit (she was my main movie buddy- but for some reason not gf- for a couple of years) along with her friends, and my next door neighbor was one of the principals... plus my folks have been lifelong fans (they'd come back to NYC and see the ballet more than they'd see me some trips). Given all that... LOOK AT ME. ... well, that, and with that perspective, I thought the film did a good job portraying that life (even the Kundis burger scene- contrary to common perception, those dancers are all world class athletes and need to fuel up the way other athletes do, so they'd put away serious meals... of course, they also have ballet-mistresses telling them they're too fat- but that happens at lower levels than City Ballet typically). Oh- my movie gb also dated the guy who knocked up Portman and choreographed the movie- he was short, but a jaw-dropping amazing dancer).

Not ashamed to admit that I don't mind The Notebook as far as romantic movies are concerned. But this was terrible, not just corny, but terrible.

Looking forward to this. But it came down to Black Swan or True Grit, and I am really glad I went with True Grit.None of my friends wants to see this with me :goodposting:

Krista et al, I also enjoyed Namesake- excellent story and very well shot and acted.
Krista and El Floppo: I highly recommend you see Iffran Khan's episodes of In Treatment on HBO. If you have Comcast, it's on for free On Demand if you're an HBO subscriber. I loved him in that series.

The first Rocky is genius, top-to-bottom.

The rest are... something other than genius- but still fun.
:lmao: And I think that's the point (though the most recent could probably have been a decent little film on its own with a little rewriting and without the Rocky history). I mean come on, Rocky is almost a different character in each movie - sometimes dumb & lovable, sometimes damned near mentally handicapped, sometimes - gasp! - smarter than the others, sometimes Rambo in shorts.

Anyway, Apollo is my favorite character in the series even if he was modeled on Ali.

I know you've been a fan of this series, and that I should give it another shot... but the first few episodes in the series were just- ugh- to me. Growing up in Marin in the 70s, it felt like every day conversation at the supermarket.

I agree re the film being filmed in an ugly fashion. It also didn't help that everyone in the movie had giant nostrils.Agree also re The Damned United.

Mr. krista has turned this show on now and again, but I've never watched. How would I go about figuring out which ones are the Iffran Khan episodes?

I understand and agree. I didn't make it through all of season two, and in season three I've only watched Deborah Winger and Iffran Khan because the other character was annoying. However...

I will say, though, that the experience varies wildly depending on which patient you're watching. I would be very surprised if you didn't end up loving Khan's character in this series. In some ways, it's a lot deeper and better than his character in The Namesake.

Killers with Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, thought it would be like a funny Mr. and Mrs. Smith, but besides Heigl's nice rack, this movie had few good qualities to go with a predictable and lame story line that was neither action nor romantic nor a comedy. 0.5/5 for Heigl's looks. Don't watch.

I watched Easy A. Pretty good modern take on the Scarlet Letter.
Watched this last night. Very entertaining.
:goodposting: really???This was the worst movie i have seen in a long long time. I am still mad at my wife for picking this one.0.5 / 5
Interesting take. Too bad you're wrong.
To each their own. If I was a 15 year old girl I would have probably liked it more.

I saw the doctor today. He said I actually grew an ovary after watching that movie. I also have been infatuated with Miley Cyrus lately as well.

Weird.

Can anyone give me your quick review of Southland Tales? I'm interested in watching it, but don't want another clunker like Sky Captain.
While I can't honestly call it a good movie, I found it to be pretty entertaining. Its weird as hell and constantly flies off the rails while making only small amounts of sense, but its basically an entertaining B-movie. Its much more entertaining than Sky Captain. I'd also give it points for being extremely unique, there isn't really another movie I think I could compare it to.I'm under the impression this is a love it or hate it type movie though. it was VERY poorly received by critics.

I'd give it 8/10, but I'm probably in the minority.

Just saw The King's Speech today. As usual, Colin Firth gave an unbelievable performance. In fact, everyone in it did a great job. I'm not normally a big fan of Helena Bonham Carter, but she was really good.

If you only like Armageddon type movies, this movie might not be your cup of tea, but if you like well acted films go see it.
