Short article on a topic that seems to pop up every 6 months in this thread: Best Picture Winners The Weren't the Best Film Nominated

We pretty much covered all the ones they list, recent ones especially. Havent seen King's Speech yet, but a bit surprised they consider it as big of an upset/injustice as most of the others listed. Id still take Crash over Brokeback though (boring, average movie with 1 great performance), but Id easily take Munich and to a lesser degree Capote over Crash (never saw Good Night & Good Luck).

hmmmm... without clicking that link, I'd say 4 out of 5 winners have better movies nominated alongside it.

Dogtooth

After seeing this, I'm pleasantly surprised this Greek film was nominated for the Best Foreign Film at the Oscars, as this was a half uncomfortably peculiar, and half disturbingly strange. The excellent acting and the quaintness of the setting, atmosphere, and the script gives the film a "realness" to it despite the outlandishness of the plot. Overall I thought it made for a very interesting film, though it's definitely not for everyone.

That list was pretty mediocre. They should have included Fargo over The English Patient and Road To Perdition over Chicago

No. Not really. It was interesting but nothing captivating. At the very least the filmmakers didn't do a very good job of telling whatever story there was to be told. I'm not sure why you think my negative take on this film is some sort of indicator that I'm "not into female rockers". Unless of course your post was all shtick.
I think the post where you said
Sure they were the first all-girl "rock" band but that was about it.
is where I got the impression you are not into female rockers. Maybe it's a matter of perception? That statment sounds somewhat dismissive. They were potentially the most influential female rock band in history, and they were relatively unknown in the US. A band with Joan Jett, Lita Ford, future members of the Bangals. They paved the way for the likes of the Go Go's, L7, Liz Phair, the Donnas. After the movie, I kept thinking, imagine if this happened today. A 15 year old girl performs in what is essentially lingere to a string of sold out shows in Japan and is a member of an all girl rock band that is relatively unknown in their country of origin, the US. How is that NOT an amazing story? And what part of this story do you feel was left out... or not told well? If this did happen today, the videos would be all over youtube, and the girls parents would be on just about every news channel having to answer questions as to why they let their 15 yo daughter become a sex object as the lead singer of a rock band in a foreign land.I agree with jdog that the producer character was interesting too. I couldn't decide weather I thought he was the biggest slime ball in the world, or if he was a marketing genius... and I think I decided the answer is 'yes'. Here is what I think. The movie featured 2 girls from the vampirey movies. No one really has any artistic respect for vampire movies. These girls were hyped up in the movie the Runaways. Now, the movie The Runaways is sort of know as that movie with the chicks from the Vampire movies. It totally lacks street cred at this point. I think the actual story of what happened is amazing and historical... but the movie was largely viewed almost as a teen flick. If you can get past the perception of the movie, I think there is a great story there. I still can't believe this whole thing actually happened. There is a documentary on Netflix instant watch called 'Edgeplay' that I'm going to check out.

 I honestly didn't even know that chick from Twilight was in the movie until 10 minutes into it. I asked my 16 year old kid who was the actress playing Joan Jett. He told me and I said "oh". Not sure why you keep trying to come up with theories on why I didn't like the movie. It's not because I don't like girl bands (in fact I pointed out to my wife that their original bass player was Michael Steel) or that I thought it was going to lack "street cred" because it was tainted with vampire chicks or whatever.

Defendor- Woody Harrelson plays a Forrest Gump-type character but, instead of being raised by a loving mother and catching every lucky break in the world, he is abandoned by his mother and pretty much has no luck at all. He dives into comic books to escape his pain and as an adult creates a super hero alter-ego to feel in control of his life and attempt to reconnect with his mother by avenging her death. As cheesy as this movie was I found it rather endearing. Woody did a really good job with the character even if everyone else around him mailed it in.

Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace

Re-watching this with my son since he's never seen it. Holy ####. George Lucas is completely incapable of eliciting a decent performance from an actor.

Deadwood

Re-watching this series on demand. Incredible, poetic, brilliant, profane, and beautiful.
I will continue with it, given this post. We tried to watch the first episode the other night, and I thought it was pretty boring. Then something came up, and we weren't able to finish it. I was contemplating just sending it back.

Wow. I watched the first 4 episodes together in a marathon session. Came away thinking it was the best 4-episode arc of TV I've ever seen.

Good- it's pretty amazing stuff, if a bit Shakespearian-verbose and monotone in voice.

Please do give it a shot. Much like Tarantino's dialogue, the dialogue is often as violent and powerful as any physical violence in the show.

Much like True Grit, the script requires the listener to pay very close attention. But I think it's well worth it.

Yeah. You wanna go outside right now?...after all, it's a lovely day. We could have tea.

Remembered that either IFC or Sundance has some movies on demand- checked last night and saw that Man on Wire was one of them. Considering we know what happened, and that the protagonist was alive telling the story, I was astonished at how much suspense the film created. I thought it did a fantastic job telling that story- getting us into the minds of the players, the amount of work/time/effort/luck/insanity went into the planning and realization of the Coup. INSANITY. Without the charisma of the Pettit, the story would've been nowhere- and of course, the event probably wouldn't have happened either. One downside was most of the reenactments... but they filled up so much of space of the movie, I guess it would've been hard to play out the voice-overs without them? WWEMD (Erol Morris). I remember this happening so vividly as a kid and I just loved seeing how they made it work. INSANITY. My balls actually hurt looking at some of those photos of him goofing around the ledges up there. INSANITY. I loved this movie.
I think this was essentially my review when I saw this (minus the balls hurting). I just couldn't believe how suspenseful it was considering we know he lived.

Inside Job:

Damn good doc about the financial meltdown. Some of the info I had an idea about, but this really cleared up a lot of the big concepts about what was going on. Still not sure I understand the concept of derivatives (I'll look for a book about that), but did a decent job of explaining this in a fairly straight forward way. Haven't seen any of the other docs nominated for the Oscar, but I can see why this one took home the award.

I did not mean for the comments about the vampire movies and 'street cred' to be directed specifically at you. I guess I should have posted it separate? It was meant to be a 'general' comment about the overall acceptance of the movie. I was much more interested in hearing what you had to say about everything I posted up to that point. My interpretation of what you said is that the movie did not tell much of a story except that they were the first all girl rock band 'but that's it'. I laid out to you the parts of the story that I think made it fascinating, and why I think it should get more credit then you do. Do you not agree with anything I said before I made the comments about 'street cred' and vampire movies?

Smokin' Aces

What a steaming pile of ####. One of the worst films I've seen in the past couple years. More plot holes than there are craters on the moon. The last 30min of the movie is as if the director is trying to one up his previous plot hole with a bigger and more idiotic one. Two redeeming qualities of the film: Jason Bateman was hilarious in his 3 odd minutes of screen time, and Alicia Keys was very hot.

I know movies are subjective, and not everybody is going to agree all the time.............but I thought Smokin Aces was very good. In all respects. 1) It's funny "#####, you forgot your hat!" and the ADD kid showing off his skills immediately come to mind. 2) The soundtrack is very good. Particularly enjoy the Prodigy song as the Tremor Brothers exit the elevator, and the Clint Mansell (who is wonderfully wonderfully gifted) instrumental at the end. 3) Alicia Keys is smokin hot. 4) Nice visuals. 5) Jason Bateman. Can you see the ending coming a mile away? Sure. But in my opinion, it didn't take anything away from a really enjoyable movie. Much better than 3/4 of the crap that's put on the screen. (Come see Angelina Jolie as a secret agent/assassin/bullet curver!!!)

Jackass 3:

More of the same, but it hit the spot last night after watching Inside Job and a having a couple of cocktails. Just like the other ones, there's stupid gags that weren't funny, some great laughs, and some stuff I could have lived without seeing (notably the "volcano" and the cocktail that Steve-O drinks). Only downfall was not having a 2D version, as you have to sit through some annoying slow motion scenes throughout the movie. It's on par with the other two movies.

This is kinda like an old white guy commenting on his favorite rap song, probably a reverse barometer, but i hate action moves & loved Smokin' Aces. Shoot-em-ups (like heavy metal & any kind of fanaticism) seem insanely stupid to me, both predictable & nonsensical. As soon as the hero dodges a voluminous strafing to hit the target with a single shot or begins a car chase that is sure to injure 100 to save 1, youve lost me. I think, in fact, it was the basic lack of heroism (the good guys being more "Holy ####!" than "Step aside") in Smoking Aces which allowed the violence to hit a suspension-of-belief level of glee necessary for me to get a kick out of it.

I can totally understand a wide, wide disparity in opinions on Smokin' Aces. Depending on the mood I'm in, I can find it awesome or awful.

it's not a good movie but it has its moments. it's derivative as hell with a plot that is utter nonsense. i knew that simply by looking at the trailer for it though. it's a perfect USA network saturday matinee flick and nothing more.

I guess the movie was just too nonsensical for me, especially considering the built up of the FBI's case was done in a pretty serious light for the first 30 minutes of the movie. Maybe if I saw the trailer of the movie first I would have known a bit more of what to expect and prepared myself for it, though I still don't think I would have liked it much. Stuff like how the FBI was shooting randomly with their pistols out of a window trying to kill a sniper in a building that's over a hundred yards away and how they didn't even know where in the building the sniper was just too much stupidity for me from the FBI. Also really didn't like how every person seemed to have 9 lives, couldn't help but roll my eyes every time it happened after the first 2 times. There were dozens more things like that were just way too nonsensical for my tastes, especially the last scene of the movie which was really bad imo.To SmoovySmoov's point, the ADD kid was pretty funny, forgot about him; except for that kid and Bateman I didn't find too much else funny besides a few random lines. Before seeing the movie I knew Clint Mansell scored the film, so I knew the soundtrack would kick-###. Didn't really think the visuals were very good at all relative to the standard shoot-em-up; the guy getting his leg sawed off by the chainsaw wasn't even shown.

The difference being that Guy Ritchie pretty much invented this style. Aces worked ok as an action flick. But all that pretentious, heavy handed nonsense? Completely unnecessary.

The Adjustment Board

This movie really worked for me. Similar in concept to Inception, but much more linear and accessible to me. I also really cared about the main characters (Matt Damon and Emily Blount). That trumps special effects and self-indulgent complexity in my book. Its based on a Phillip K **** short story and I am a big fan of his work. There is not a lot I can say about it without walking around spoilers, so I'll just say go see it. I read a couple of reviews before I went and I wish I had not. I would have been really fun to have all that revealed to me, rather than know it was coming- And bring your wife or a date, they'll like it too.

4.5/5 stars

As an anecdote, go rent My Favorite Year

The Next 3 Days:

Couldn't get through this one, and found myself using the FF on the remote. Movie with Russell Crowe and Elizabeth Banks about a wife accused of murder and somehow her nerdy professor husband busting her out of jail. I know it's a movie, but it was all kinds of unrealistic and thought the acting was bad. Average at best, and I could see others liking it, so the rating from me will be a 4/10. I know there are many fans of P.Haggis and his masterpiece Crash in this thread who will be disappointed to read this review. Not that I should take much stock in imdb rankings, but I was surprised this was sitting at a 7.4 there.
