Red State:

Kevin Smith has done comedy and "action", so this was his attempt at a thriller/horror I guess. Centers on a cult-like church in the vein of the Baptist church that protests the funerals of homosexuals and soldiers. We get 3 kids captured after replying to a sex ad and taken to a church to so they can make an example of them. The rest is just a 20min long sermon and a terrible looking shoot out with really bad acting and dialogue. Thought the idea sounded mildly interesting, but Smith really doesn't have anything fresh to say during the movie. Feels like in his mind he was shooting a Tarantino-type movie. I am a fan of his first few movies for what they are, but really he hasn't put out a good product in quite some time. 5/10
Politically, I'd say that my views are pretty similar to Smith's. But there's no part of me that wants to see this movie. The real Westboro Baptist Church is horrifying enough on their own.
I'm a huge fan of his and have even talked to him a few times, but I couldn't finish this. Watch instead the documentary "The Most Hated Family in America", which is much more terrifying that Red State.

12 Angry Men - 8/10

Mark this as another pre-'75 movie that I really enjoyed.

I really liked that they had the characters display the intense emotions they did without having it seem like overacting (which I find endemic in older films).

All the performances were terrific. As was the camerawork.
This is nearly perfect film IMO, I give it 10/10. It hard to judge it next to more complicated films but I don't have any complaints about it, which is rare.

Ive never seen either of the Pet Sematary movies...if I watch them on AMC will too much gore/violence be cut out?
not really any gore that i can recall. not really a good film or adaptation of king's work.ETA: the thing i remember most about it was ed "herman munster" gwinn using the worst maine-northeaster accent ever committed to film history.
One scene from the first that might get cut would be a guy getting his Achilles sliced. Other than that I don't remember much gore.
Best ACL injury in a movie? My vote goes to Murder in the First.

Never seen it. Any good?btw I'll take an ACL over an Achilles six days a week and twice on Sunday.

Oops, I must have been out of it this morning. Meant Achilles injury. Absolutely brutal unless you don't care for Kevin Bacon. It's pretty much the only thing I remember from the movie, but I think it was good.

This reminds me of a thread in the shark pool yesterday about Demaryius Thomas...

he tore his achilles, in about 5 threads since then i've asked anybody to name me a WR1 after they tore an achilles

maybe there is one but i'm still waiting for his name
He lost it when he was a kid. Not just torn and repaired but he doesn't even have it at all. I remembered this from some story about him back when the Steelers won their first recent SB.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hines_Ward

When he came out of college it was discovered that Ward was missing an ACL in his left knee, which he lost during a bicycle accident during childhood

If you're a Smith fan you should rent his college lecture DVDs. Really funny.

Black Christmas (1974):

Have seen this one on quite a few lists but never got around to it. Was really impressed with this one. Sure there was a bit of 70s cheese in here, but it was offset by a really effective and creepy use of POV shooting. Also thought the killer's phone calls were unnerving as well and really added tension to those scenes. Highly recommend this one to fans of horror, as it is quite interesting to see the genesis of slasher movies before the onset of Micheal, Jason, and Freddy.

Maybe my favorite horror movie of all time. Saw this when I was a kid and it scared the #### out of me. Just watched the last couple scenes on youtube and still find it unsettling. Olivia Hussey was incredibly hot.

Last night (thanks to Rhymes) I watched "most Hated Family" (on documentaries.com), then watched Red State. The doc was pretty compelling, but it just made me profoundly sad as the director began to get close to the girls and got to know them. They are all going to be so criminally effedup (yet still attractive) that they probably poison and destroy numerous future families. I just don't see how that kind of crazy can ever be cured.

i think it made me more enjoy, or at least put into better context, Red State. Overall I was quite disappointed. it had some really nice flashes, but felt very sophomoric. At this point in his career, Kevin S should not be flashing the sophomoric. I also thought the third act was completely unnecessary. REally did not need govt conspiracy on top of all the other plot devises in play.

I've long said that Smith is a better writer than he is a director. And I think his deficiencies as a director are most evident when he's directing serious material.

I guess I gave him a bit more of a pass because this was so different from what he has directed before. Like you stated, there were flashes in this movie - while it was a tad long, I thought the sermon stood out and there were a couple decent action scenes. However, what is getting me frustrated with Smith is that his dialogue is so damn juvenile. Feels like he is trying to tackle serious topics while writing for Jay and Silent Bob. A lot of groan-worthy lines in this one that really took me out of the mood of the film.

The Birds - 7/10

I don't get Hitch's penchant for abrupt endings (see: North By Northwest). But my god is Tippi Hedren gorgeous.
this is one of the hitchcock films whose stock has been risen over the years for me. it's a departure from a lot of his other films but really succeeds. And, yes, Hedren is a hot POA.

Halloween (70s):

Yep, still one of the best horror movies ever made. 10/10

House of 1000 Corpses:

Watched it again for the first time in awhile. I have really grown to love what Zombie brings to the table as a horror director. Basically this movie is a TCM rip-off thrown into a blender with a really ####ed up carnival. Love him or hate him, he has a way of getting a visceral reation out of the crowd and for me that is a step in the right direction. I like his middle two movies more, but this one is ride I like to take every other year or so. And I want to do dirty, dirty things to Sheri Moon. 7/10

A Nightmare on Elm Street 2:

These movies have not aged well at all. Still like the first one for sentimental reasons, but even that one looked dated. This sequel I had a hard time even getting through. Here we have Freddy trying to take over some poor sap's body so he can come back to kill. Just filled with bad acting, cheesy bedroom dance sequences, etc.. that really kill any creepiness that might have been able to build up. Was thinking about revisting this whole series slowly like I am starting to do with the Halloweens and Friday the 13ths, but not sure I can do it in this case. Will put in 3 because I remember liking that one a bit, but not sure I will go much farther. 3/10. I think Freddy as a horror icon >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> the quality of these movies.

Dumb question for the videophiles. If I buy a BluRay DVD and play it in a standard DVD player, will it work?
no, but many Blurays now come with a "digital" copy that you can play on most computers and many dvd players.
Cool. Thanks guys. Just looked and was shocked at how much cheaper BluRay players are now than when I last looked. Will probably just get the damned player and move my standard to the bedroom.

It's been ages for me but I recall the third one being my favorite. It appealed to my comic book nerdness. And IIRC there was a very hot nurse who did some amazing things with her tongue.

I thought Freddy vs Jason was pretty good, certainly much better than the handful of movies in each franchise before it

I had Jason Goes to Hell on last night. More so bad its bad than so bad its good

I like some slow moving, experimental movies, but The Tree of Life was a total failure IMO. The story had potential and what there was of it was interesting, but half the movie was visuals that I found extremely boring. Maybe I'm not as open minded as I think I am, but it wasn't for me.

I saw that #### in the theater. Remember something about a coroner eating Jason's heart or some crap like that.

Did my 'put-the-baby-down-while-watching-part-of-a-movie" thing... caught 1/2 hour or so of Invictus. Based on the 1/2 hour, that was a pretty horrifically cliched pile right there- quasi-hack-like film-making. Is my quick-pick assessment wrong?

Batman Returns is even worse than I remembered. The original Batman was pretty decent, but that whole franchise was a joke pre-nolan.

I remember how big of a deal the first one was in 5th grade when it came out but damn they really bastardized the whole thing compared to begins and tdk.

Not really wrong, but that describes 90% of sports movies, doesn't it?

And wasn't Invictus by Eastwood? IIRC, it was fairly well reviewed? If so on both counts... woof. I've liked Eastwood more than not, but between Hereafter and Invictus, I'm done.

I like Gran Torino the best out of his recent productions. Mystic River and Million Dollar baby are vastly overratted IMO. At least GT wasn't overratted as well.Haven't heard good things about Invictus or Hereafter. Kind of bummed he directed J. Edgar cause I was looking forward to that until I realized it was Eastwood and not Scorsesse.

I was flipping through channels last night and forced myself to watch the end of Batman Returns to remind myself how bad it was, however, it was actually even worse.

I grew up watching all of the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. Absolutely love them. Watched each series multiple time.

Never got into Freddy, but I could watch Jason all day long.Jason Goes to Hell is awesome, that part where he rips the chick in half with a steel fence post is so :moneybag:

Gran Torino is likely my favorite as well. I thought Mystic River was very good, I dont think Id call it overrated. However, Million Dollar Baby and Flags of Our Fathers I think are overrated, I found both to be heavy handed and very average. Flags of our Fathers is my least favorite war movie I can remember seeing. For what it was, I thought Invictus was perfectly fine and its worth seeing for Freeman as Mandela alone. As for Hereafter, looks horrible and I have no interest in seeing it.That said, he definitely has some "recent" movies he's directed that I think are underrated like Blood Work, Bird, and a personal favorite, True Crime. Now Id probably prefer to have Scorsese directing this, but Eastwood has a good enough track record that I expect J. Edgar to be good and wont hold the films I didnt like against him. Not to mention DiCaprio is the best lead actor he's ever directed (I was going to say since Sean Penn, but I dont think anyone was a lead in Mystic River)

As someone who watched both Nicholson's Batman and Batman Returns in their entirety within the past 6 months, I was amazed how bad Batman was and that I thought Returns was relatively much better. I wouldnt call either good, but I think DeVito/Walken > Nicholson here and Id rather watch Returns again if I had to pick one.

Oh, I like them, and I definitely like the Friday franchise more than Nightmare. I actually thought there was more movies in each series between 1990 and now, but there was only 3 movies in each series besides Freddy vs Jason, which I still think is the best of that bunch.

The Hangover and This is Spinal Tap

I must have a really different sense of humor because neither of these elicited anything more than a slight guffaw from me.
