My kind of action movie. It starts fast and doesn't stop. There's very little dialog/plot, just the bare minimum to get by. If you're in the mood for a mindless popcorn flick this is a pretty good one.

I don't understand why you rated it so low. It - rightfully - received a lot of hype on these boards. If it's a nonstop mindless action movie you want, this is as good as it gets. The fighting rarely takes a break. Loved this movie. I'll give it a 5/5 'for an action movie'.

End of WatchWent to see the Master in 70mm, but it was sold out, so I caught this instead. The review left me nonplussed and I could not see Jake Gyllenhaal or Michael Peña carrying this movie on their shoulders, as would be required in this type effort.I was mistaken. Both actors were phenomenal and made the rapidly-growing-trite character-held video camera pretty damn compelling. Both actors gave bravura performances that sucked me in and made the movie a thrill and a joy to watch. I really cared about both characters and what happened to them/. Very well done.4.15/ stars
Saw this a few weeks ago and loved it. Really one of the best cop/crime drama movies of recent memory. Gyllenhaal and Pena's chemistry was great and makes you really believe this is based on a true story. I thought the video aspect of it would get annoying, but it didnt, and it really added to the action scenes.
Goon - 8/10I remember this getting good reviews here overall and I dug it a lot more than I thought I would. While not the greatest actor, Seann William Scott did a good job and he's able to pull off a tricky character to play. Baruchel was over the top but it didn't take away from the movie and I think it actually helped add to the scenes where he was being supportive of Doug. Schreiber was perfect for the character, thought he did a tremendous job with the minor role.
This was great. It wasnt quite as funny as I expected considering the good reviews, but I enjoyed it all the same. Easily one of the best sports comedies/spoofs ever. I know its drawn comparisons to Slapshot, but its a real good sports comedy in its own right.
Terminator 2 was on last night. How fricken phenominal was that movie? Sure, she couldn't manually load a shotgun with one hand repeatedly, and the kid wasn't a great actor, but seriously. Who cares? This may have been the pinnacle of Arnold's career.
I have only seen a few of the movies that were nominated for best picture last year (Hugo, Moneyball, War Horse), but looking at the rest of the list and being reminded of how great this movie was all around, I think Hugo should have won best picture last year.

I watched these two over the last few days and agree with your assessment. Quite a few good laughs in The Campaign which make it worth the watch, but overall I think it was lucky it clocked in under 90mins (which is what comedies should be at).
I loved Safety Not Guaranteed, but I wish I could unsee the last 5mins or so of the film. It really felt out of place with the rest of it and it left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Mostly it had to do with the 'tone' of the ending and how out of left field it felt. Up until the last 5 mins it played like an indie mystery and I felt like we were supposed to be figuring out if this guy was nuts or for real. Now all of a sudden we have a time machine on a boat with a light show that looked like it was out of that Guy Pierce Time Machine? Felt really out of place.
Mostly it was the tone, but I did feel cheated by them telling us that he was capable of this. Yes, I think an ambiguous ending would have fit more with the rest of the movie. Maybe have them get into a more iffy looking machine, and have it open as to if they died or travelled in time? Or as somebody suggested, leave it open somehow by him deciding not to go because he met the girl, but maybe at the end somehow give us a hint that he just might have done it the other time like he suggested (maybe tie it in more to the Kristin Bell story thread?).
A couple are planning to make a movie about a cult whose leader (a great Brit Marling) claims to be from the future. I loved this movie. Great tension throughout and a fantastic performance by Brit. After this and Another Earth I will be watching anything that she has a hand in. I thought they did a great job of building the suspense, creating tension amongst the new couple and between current members and the new initiates and trying to figure out who is lying to who and what is going on. Liked that the ending made me want to watch it over right away. For now, one of the better movies I have seen from the past year - 8/10

Still really liked the movie...
I can understand that but I really dislike ambiguous endings. I feel like they're a cope out by the director. Up until the big ball of light (or whatever it was), I thought it was very tense and could have gone a few different ways.

I like ambiguous if it matches with the rest of the movie. It would have worked better with this movie since the whole movie was going back and forth whether he was making it up or not. One of my other beefs:
At any point did we get a hint about him having any sort of technological capability? After seeing the time travelling boat, I was also annoyed because there didn't seem to be too much of a hint of him being able to to this at all. We seem them 'training', but that seemed laughable. Sure he stole some equipment, but I don't remember seeing anything laying around that might suggest he had any competency in building anything. Maybe I just missed something.

kind of off topic but maybe this can help someone else like it has me. if you register at IMDB you can create a watchlist of movies you want to...well watch. i have been using IMDB for years and never knew this existed, it has really helped me keep track of movies i want to see.
Watched it last night, and I am still not sure how I feel about it. Seemed like the core story was better, and I got into that more. However, thought the CGI looked cheesier and it is hard to shake thoughts about why this movie needed to be made. I guess it's easiest to say that there are things that were better and things that were worse in it and I would put it below Spidey 2 and even with the first one?
After being in the dark this week, we are jonesing for a movie-night and thinking about This Must be the Place (w Sean Penn), which is playing just down the street. Anybody seen this?
Interestingly odd little dramedy starring Sean Penn as a soft spoken Robert Smith type retired rocker. Not sure if it was because I was slightly inebriated, but I thought the plot kinda jumped all over the place in the middle/end portions. Still, had some very funny bits and some great lines throughout, and I thought Penn was excellent in his bizarre role. David Byrne also makes a cameo appearance/performance. It had some of the pieces to be great, but erratic plot in the 2nd half of the film held it back. Still, one of the more interesting films of 2011 that I liked overall.
That's what JZilla and I had to say about it. If I recall correctly you aren't able to go to the theatre very often? If that's the case I'd probably take the chance with Cloud Atlas over This Must Be The Place.

I like serious super hero movies, but how many good ones are there? I think it's harder to do a good serious super hero movie because the subject is innately silly.
I don't think many have been attempted due to the "innately silly" thing. Which I disagree with wholeheartedly BTW. They have been made that way by people who haven't respected the heart of the source material when bringing them to a larger audience. Spiderman was about a socially disconnected/inept, nerdy, teen trying to find his place in a rapidly changing world. They used the villains and situations to tell that story in a unique way but Spiderman's flawed humanity was still the heart of the matter. And it made for some powerful stories. One of the reasons I loved Iron Man was the flawed human being at the center of the tale. A brilliant man who was also an alcoholic with massive personality issues and serious health issues. It was the struggle with that frailty and the desire to be more that really made him interesting, everything else is just a way to tell the story. With Downey in the role I was hoping it would get explored more. But they went the easy way really. Still enjoyable but they lost something IMO. So for me pretty much every superhero tale from the Marvel Universe could be much more serious in it's tone and it could work.
"Watchmen" might have killed the prospects of the 'serious' superhero movie. It may be a while before we see another one that portrays superheros with such realism.
I hate to admit it, but I really like how M. Night did Unbreakable as far as a "Superhero" movie. He corned it up a little too much for my taste, but I still like the "realism" aspect to it. Remains one of my all time favorite superhero movies.
I really liked it, but don't you think that one scene in the weight room kind of ruined it?I'm pretty sure that's teh only scene that explicitly spells it out for us that the guy is superhuman, up until that point being left up to us to decide if he was, or if it was simply some kind of crazy determination and self confidence.they should have left it a mystery, putting the emphasis on his strength of character rather than how much weight he can lift.
If you find Ben Stiller, Jonah Hill, and Vince Vaughn funny (I do for the most part) this is a terrible movie with some pretty good laughs. If you don't find them funny, it is a terrible movie. Some of the banter was great between them, and I would probably watch a little if I stumbled across it just for that, but wouldn't want to sit through it all again. For fans of those three - 5/10 for non fans probably more on the lines of 3/10.
The Staircase:
Started watching the first 2 parts to this last night. Maybe it was getting late, but I think it is detailed to to fault. Still damn interesting if you are interested in seeing a case (for this it was an alleged murder) and what goes on behind it. Can be a little sluggish, but I have the feeling it is only going to get better.
Secretary:
Co-worker recommended this one to me, and I ended up enjoying it. Spader is great as the sleazy dominating boss, and I thought Maggie G was great in it as well. 7/10.
The wife and I also have been slowly going through the first season of American Horror Story. Was caught off guard (in a good way) by some of the content on the show. It got a bit repetitive after 3-4 episodes, but there are still enough creepy moments and decent characters to keep us going. I think we are on episode 8 or so now.
I finally got around to seeing gattaca, and while I thought it was pretty decent it seemed to get a lot more favorable buzz, if I remember right.maybe my expectations were too high, and I'm not saying it was bad, but who really loved it and why?
I liked the concept alright, acting, story and direction too. But I loved the art direction- the styling of it was right up my alley (favorite car featured in it as well as some fantastic architecture and costuming).eta: so in Chaka's version of the future, dudes in styling suits take off on outerspace missions.

Just dominant. Spader and Gyllenhall were two halves made whole by fulfilling each others pschyological needs maniifested through primal physical desire. It's similar to that yakuza leader in "Ichi the Killer" seeking out the ultimate in pain and finally finding his euphoria in the torment that leads to his death.

Not sure about the spaceship thing (although, hey why not?) I'm talking about the dudes in styling suits creating a caste system between genetically modified and natural born people thing.
Didn't know what to expect. A single and lonely guy joines a medical study to kill time. He takes pills and his life starts to change. Pretty well done. The acting is first class. I'd probably watch it again.
I tried to watch this and couldn't do it. Maybe it was because I was on a plane. Perhaps should give it another try.By the way, I've let this thread down. :( Will try to do a little make-up posting and then be better in the future.

I think I posted in the separate thread on this one. Even with the hype, it didn't disappoint--I LOVED it. Watched it twice in a row as I figured there were a lot of things I'd missed the first time around that I'd catch on second viewing, and I did. I could watch that "Roll with the Changes" scene over and over and every time.

I'm not going to post long reviews of anything since I'm so far behind but will give quick thoughts on a few that stood out to me over the past six months.
On the "good movies I kind of wish I hadn't watched" list, add King of Devil's Island, a Norwegian movie--with the always-great Stellan Skarsgard--about an uprising at a reform school in the early 20th century. I realize that description doesn't make it sound great, but it's extremely compelling though difficult to watch.
I've been mad about the movie Young Adult since I watched it several months ago. So mad I haven't wanted to write about it. Think jdogg or someone else whose views I respect loved this one, yes? The premise was very good, and there were so many moments of great cleverness and promise. Inevitably those moments would be followed by something so trite, so cliched, so predictable, that I just couldn't stand it. I was actually yelling at the screen before
she slept with the Patton Oswalt character
, "Don't do it! Don't let the movie go for that cliche!" But they did. Every time I thought we'd turned the corner into a movie that could be pretty special (for instance, I loved the line, "He knew me when I was at my best"), it was ruined. And Charlize Theron is just a spectacular actress, by the way.
Quick note that I really enjoyed Moonrise Kingdom despite having a general bias against movies with oh-so-clever children as protagonists. Breath of fresh air, that movie. The best movie I've watched in a while was the documentary Undefeated, though I recommend NOT watching this on a plane as it was quite embarrassing to be sobbing in full view of the flight attendants.
