Hello Herman

Decided to check this out despite the really low rating (4.9) because of Norman Reedus (aka Daryl Dixon). Not sure what people had a problem with but I thought it was a little different take the mind of school shooter. People on IMDB seem to be screaming 'propaganda' (I assume right wing Fox News watchers) but I didn't see it that way since it presents everyone in the movie poorly in some way.

World War Z

As an action flick it works well. I enjoyed it as such. As a zombie/horror it is awful, so look at it as a mindless action ride.
Watched it last night.... thought it was terrible as any kind of movie. Zero character development and too much motivationless action that seemed shoe-horned into scenes just to create confilct. I was ready to turn this thing off half way through- wish I had.

Saw Flight last night. It had it's moments but man, was it disjointed. I was also annoyed by the repetitive use of heavy soundtrack fading out to headphones or a background radio in the scene. Annoying.

The Counselor

Saw the movie last night. Very, very good. Cormac McCarthy is a poet. Now, while I don't think Cameron Diaz is on par with the writing in this movie, there's still plenty to like here. Much like No Country For Old Men, you aren't going to see a typical thriller here. Great movie if you like script-driven films.

Watched a lot of horror flicks over the past week

Teeth...based around the premise of the main character having teeth in one of her holes that isnt her mouth. Still not sure how I feel about this one. It was well done, and had a handful of particularly gripping scenes, but didnt really go anywhere it seemed, although the ending did reach a climax. It was funny seeing the one Nip/Tuck Dr's son here playing a supposed bad ###. It was almost as much drama as it was horror, and almost felt like I was watching a real life story unfold, as odd as that may sound. I liked it, but expected more I think...2.6/5

Cloverfield...Enjoyed this, although Im a bit surprised by the overwhelming acclaim it seems to get, I guess partially because of how many people dislike found footage/handheld shot movies. It gets rolling quick and doesnt let up, and has a short running time to boot. Couldve used some more shots of the monster towards the end I think, although I did like the ending....3.2/5

All The Boys Love Mandy Lane...Slasher starring Amber Heard. Its 7 years old but based on what I read before watching I guess it was/will be re-released in theaters this year? I thought the main ensemble of actors were quite good, as was the dialogue. Heard plays the good girl who everyone wants to bang, and she gets invited to join a group of friends, who are acquaintances to her, from her high school for a weekend at one of their family's ranches in the sticks, and violence ensues. It starts to make you think one thing, then start second guessing and has some nice twists. Really liked the last 20-30 minutes. With how much slasher garbage is out there, this was a really nice surprise...3.7/5

Hatchet..decent, although I expected more. Like Cloverfield sort of, Im a bit surprised by the cult status Hatchet seems to have. Ive liked them in other movies and again I thought Joel David Moore and Deon Richmond were good and probably the biggest reason this is a cut above your standard slasher. Not much else to write home about though, and didnt find it particularly scary either...2.5/5

I Spit On Your Grave...The remake from a few years ago. If you dont know the plot, a girl gets raped and then gets away afterwards before they can kill her, and then she proceeds to get revenge on those that violated her. Pretty brutal but I thought it was well done and thoroughly enjoyed it at the same time. Tons of suspense, I thought the lead girl was very good, and while her revenge doesn't pull any punches, its also well thought out and not just gore for gore purposes...I plan on watching this one again, for sure..3.9/5

Would You Rather...A young girl whose little brother has cancer gets an offer from a philanthropist to go to his dinner party, where one guest will be rewarded with full medical care/priority for their loved one in need. Of course, its more than just a dinner party, and the guests are pitted against one another until there is only one left to be the winner. I found this more entertaining and dark comedy than horror (and it worked in this regard), but of course there is some twisted violence as well. Its hard to explain the ending without giving anything away, but its quite memorable...2.8/5

Maniac...I didnt realize this until after the fact, but this is somewhat of a remake of a movie called Maniac from 1980. Here, Elijah Wood plays the title character. Its pretty much entirely shot as a POV from his perspective, which added an interesting element I thought. I didnt know how I felt about this one after it ended, but its stuck with me for a few days now so I guess I liked it more than I initially thought. Its really as much of a character study on Wood's character as it is horror, as youre seemingly in his head for the entire film. Wood plays a guy who takes over the family business of restoring mannequins, some of which in his mind come to life thanks to him after attaching a human scalp to them. Although it was hard to buy into the diminutive Wood as this sadistic serial killer at first, I thought he did well pulling off the part, and the creepiness that first appeared from him in Sin City is here in full force. It gets a bump from me for its originality in the POV shot style that lets the viewer almost feel like they are the killer..4/5

Cloud Atlas

I'm only 30 minutes in, but this is some whacky, ####ed up ####.
Did you finish it?

I thought it was better than I expected (though to be honest, I had low expectations going in).
Not yet. Will take another crack at it soon.
For a movie guy, you sure watch them weird. I notice you often break up your viewing. That'd drive me nuts. If I don't have the time available to watch it all the way through uninterrupted by anyone or anything, I wait.

Sometimes you just have to take your time and trudge through. Cloud Atlas was one of the ones I was glad I forced myself to finish.

I watched The Shining, front to back, for the first time last night.

I'm not normally a big fan of Kubrick (only slightly less overrated than Scorsese) but this really is a terrific movie.

Lots of crazy theories as to what it's "about". But if you watch it through the lens of alcoholism - which King wrote the story about in the first place - I think the movie makes perfect sense.

And it really is a cool looking movie. Lots and lots of great takes.

The Hunt - 4/5

A Danish film from last year. It explores the consequences of a false accusation on a lonely man. A small town descends into mass hysteria as this man's life is brutally shattered. It's heartbreaking to watch. You'll recognize the lead actor as the villain in Casino Royale.

Is Life of Pi worth watching? I'm easily entertained. Keep on resisting it on HBOGO.
You can pass on it imo. The story wasn't great and things got rather boring when it was just the kid and the tiger on the boat. The movie's very impressive visually, but not impressive enough for the movie to be worth a 2+ hour sit through, though that may have been the case if you saw it in theaters, as apparently it was one of the best uses of 3D in film ever.

The 18 year old me would be surprised to hear me say this, but I don't ever need to see another serial killer movie again.

I think there's been a distressing lack of good serial killer movies in the past decade.

Do you mean slasher style films? IIRC you are a big fan of Zodiac.

I don't classify Zodiac as a slasher movie. That's more of a thriller. Ficher put together a compelling movie around the violent aspects that elevated it above slasher movies. I've had it with the Dario Argento/Lucio Fulchi-spawned misogyny of most slasher movies.

Maniac is actually pretty good, but its not on a Zodiac level of good. Id still say its worth checking out though.

So it's like Hugo on a boat?

Pretty much, but not as entertaining.

I don't classify Zodiac as a slasher film either. You said that you don't need to see another serial killer film, Zodiac is most definitely a serial killer film. I was just looking for clarification, which you provided. Thanks.

Only God Forgives with Ryan Gosling is awful.
So there is a bad Gosling movie, interesting.
what makes me sad is it happened twice in a year- gangster squad also came out in 2013.
I enjoyed Gangster Squad. If you dont take it seriously, and it didnt seem to with its over the top style, schtick, and dialogue, I thought it was a fun watch. Sort of like Shoot Em Up except not quite as much satire.

Its not Chinatown, and it wasnt trying to be.

Agreed.

White House Down

Not nearly as good as Olympus Has Fallen, but it's worth a watch if you're bored. The special fx reminded me of something from an early 90's action flick, and it was very cheesy at times. So many cliched characters it made me roll my eyes.

No really. I don't know that I've ever enjoyed a Scorsese movie.
Goodfellas, The Departed, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, or Shutter Island?
No, not really. Shutter Island was okay, but that was the least Scorsese of the Scorsese movies you listed.

Holy Jesus what an indictment. Olympus Has Fallen is one of the worst movies I've seen in the last 10 years.

I thought it was great at what it wanted to be. A mindless action film. Were you expecting Casablanca?

No, but I wasn't expecting Die Hard 5 meets Plan 9 From Outer Space.

Then I would suggest you go nowhere near White House Down. Unless you're one of those shmucks that enjoys watching things they don't like, (like in the walking dead and SoA threads), which I am confident you are not.

This makes it very difficult to put much faith in your movie critiques.

I might be willing to concede that Taxi Driver is somewhat overrated, Casino even more so and I am not really a fan of Departed or Shutter Island. However not giving any love to Raging Bull or Goodfellas is mind boggling. Seriously :loco: stuff right there.

If you hadn't turned me onto The Core, which I love, I would probably put you on ignore for this thread.

So you agree with me on 4 of the 6 movies.

And I'm not saying I DISliked Raging Bull or Goodfellas. They're just not incredible masterpieces like some say they are.

I absolutely love all those, and its not like those are his only good or noteworthy films. Mean Streets, Gangs of New York, Cape Fear, The Color of Money, The Last Waltz, The Aviator, etc, etc. The Wolf of Wall Street looks like another winner.

To each his own, I guess.

I agree on two of the films, kind of agree on one and think Taxi Driver is still an incredible film but perhaps a little overrated.

Raging Bull is an absolute masterpiece and Goodfellas comes close and what it lacks in "masterpiece value" it makes up for in "pure awesomeness".

this might just be the beginning of the end. choosing movies about fighting robots over a good slasher? I feel like I don't know you anymore. ;)
