I saw Mary in the theater with a huge audience and laughed a lot. Re-watch that film a couple of times alone on your TV and it doesn't hold up very well. The Farrelly brothers are excellent comic filmmakers. But I think Mary is more of a zeitgeist than a great comedy.

Watched two episodes. Intrigued. Jeffrey Dean Morgan a charismatic lead. Production value off the charts. Probably the best looking cast I've ever seen. One girl better looking then the next. Olga Kurylenko

This Is the End - I got through 42 minutes and shut it off. Maybe it gets better, but I had to take a poop and never went back to find out. Would not recommend.
2 Guns - Not terrible. It provided the entertainment I wanted and had some witty moments. Paula Patton is also not ugly. Would recommend.
Gravity - I really enjoyed this. Bullock pulled this off a la Cast Away/Tom Hanks. While it may not be all that exciting, I found myself holding my breath for some moments because the effects/movie is done so well. Would recommend.

Overall, I really enjoyed this. Domhnall Gleeson and Rachel McAdams had good chemistry. The secondary characters were mostly solid and I liked the overall message.

Finally caught The World's End. Honestly, as someone who thought Hot Fuzz and Shaun of the Dead were somewhat overrated, going in I expected to have the same "meh, it was ok" reaction to this one. I was totally wrong. Loved it. Much better than the first two, and eclipsed This is the End as my favorite comedy of the year.
Not a ton of roll on the floor moments, but it kept you constantly chuckling throughout, and the sad/emotional stuff they mixed in was actually very fitting and well acted. Good characters, good comedy, good action, good drama. 9/10.

The Past
Another really great, realistic and compelling family drama from the Iranian director who won the 2011 Oscar for best foreign film for A Separation. Winning the award so recently is probably what kept this film from making the short-list for the 2014 Oscars. Highly recommended for fans of A Separation or foreign films in general.

Really enjoyed Anchorman 2 and American Hustle, now I've seen two more really good ones:
Frances Ha
I was inspired to watch this after enjoying Noah Baumbach's Greenberg. I really loved Frances Ha. Excellent writing, acting and cinematography. This movie is special. It's very funny, and even when it's making a more serious point, it's very lighthearted. Probably one of the best films I've seen in the last five years. Huge thumbs up.
We Bought A Zoo
What a surprise. I was fully prepared to hate this movie. In lesser hands, this would have been terrible. Despite using devices that are dreadful in a bad movie, Zoo has a framework and character development that allows it to rise above the inherent cliches based on solid writing and acting. Great family film.
Really enjoyed Anchorman 2 and American Hustle, now I've seen two more really good ones:

Still can't get all the way through this one. As people have been posted, Stiller is hit or miss for me, and usually needs to be outshadowed a bit by others in the movie. Once the movies get too "Stillery", I loose interest.

Just the type of stupid humor I was looking for. Thought it did a lot better job at bringing the funny and poking fun at the figure skating world than Zoolander's attempt to poke fun at the modelling world. Could just be for me Farrell >> Stiller to begin with. Enjoyed this one quite a bit.

Group of friends known for throwing great 'theme' parties decide on their last blow out before the house is sold out from under them - of course it is an orgy. Couple of the characters were kinda funny and there was so decent chemistry, but overall it was a dud for me.
Now time to pencil in the 7-8 movies that I wanted to watch before release on Tuesday.

There just aren't many laughs in this movie. The gas stations scene was funny. But again, most Stiller comedies do not take advantage of his comic timing and presence. They fail at the script level.

Ummmmm...ok.
Just for the sake of argument, are there any other words that will prevent you from watching a movie? Too many "and"? Too many "monkey"? I apologize for sounding glib, but I really cannot fathom how an adult is sensitive to cussing in the year 2014.

It's just a thing I have. I don't like gratuitous anything, including profanity.I had to turn off Boondock Saints because of it.
People I hang around don't swear. They just don't. And I think East and West coasters do it more than Midwesterners.
I'm 100% certain I'm not alone in not liking excessive profanity in my entertainment.

No, I'm certain that there's a significant segment of the population that is sensitive to vulgarity. This is an interesting topic to me. I understand that vulgarity can be very offensive. But words are words, and as such they are just tools. For example, "Black people are not smart," is extremely offensive despite those words being pretty benign by themselves.

Absolutely better than Hot Fuzz. I think the World's End is a great film (I've seen it popping up on some top 10 of the year lists, which it deserves). It is layered with rich, deep characters, but it isn't afraid to set up a bunch of silly gags too. It is very well acted and executed. I cannot recommend this movie highly enough.

Well, I said "almost" as the "N" word always is and the "F" word is almost like that.

Watched the first new Hobbit movie again - the one with the really really long build up to that awesome, can't believe I just saw it, cliff hangar of looking at a mountain a few worlds away. Yeah, I still liked it.
Star Trek - the first new one. Where the old spock told the young Kirk to betray the young Spock so that they could end up being friends like old Spock and the no longer exists Kirk - still love it.
STar Trek - the one with Khan - the new one - the one where they took the best ending in sci-fi history and inverted it to look cool to all the new kids like lighting up a camel cigarette that split second before you inhale and realize that holy hell they dont' have filters - eh, I still love this one too.
Star Trek Nemesis- the one with the clone of Piccard that looks absolutely totally in every way nothing like John Luc Piccard who was wanting to blow up the Earth with midget gargoyles who also happened to be telepathic but couldn't share the idea that hey, we are ****ing stupid as a villan in this universe. One of the worst of the bunch, but hey, there is a new Data so, cool.... Brent Spiner still gets his $20 a day food allowance.
Thor - the first one. I have watched it alot since I DVR'ed it and I'm not going to lie.... it's solely to watch Natlie Portman do or say anything. I keep hoping there is a scene where she smiles and then just starts kissing Kat Dennings and...... sorry. The soldier chick was hot too. This is one of the better superhero of late movies. Look forward to watching Thor 2 when it comes out on free tv as well.
Cars 2 - I have kids. Watching this I wish I didn't.
Top Gun - on TV, only caught the end. Still one of the greatest movies ever made. You have to give credit to Tom Cruise and directors for dressing a man up like a woman just enough to not make it so bad when she/he is the main love interest in a movie that really, really didn't need one. It would have been better if he just took over the man duties with Meg Ryan.
Batman Rises...... has anyone watched this movie and thought................... god will he stop using that ridiculous whisper voice please god almighty have Bane rip his throat out. A Mute Batman. That would be awesome. All Dark Knight-ish but a nod to handicapped people in a PC world. Fights crime. Can't talk. Perfect. I liked the picture of Maggie Gyllenhal on the desk in the beginning. You deserve to lock yourself in a room for 8 years for thinking she is hot. I get it, I've seen her I'm a whore movie too and she can act the whore with the best of them, but she isn't good looking. She would certainly not be a highlight of the prostitute thread at all.
Pacific Rim - my son watches this once a week so I watch this once a week. It's still fun from start to finish. Might just be close to the perfect movie.
Yeah, that's pretty much it lately. Will be going to the Lego movie on opening night. Oh yeah, middle aged parent right here. Check me out.

Watched Assault on Wall Street and can't recommend it. It's a revenge fantasy movie about a guy that loses his life savings and takes vengeance out on the stockbrokers he believes were responsible. Takes forever to get to the action, but once it does the action is realistic (earns it's R rating). Movie didn't seem like it knew how far it wanted to go, with the lengthy time given to the (poorly acted) frustration of losing everything to the cartoonish action in Punisher/Rambo mode.
