Weird. Is it just me or is The Wolf of Wall Street just Boiler Room mixed with Wall Street?

Oz The Great & Powerful - The sad thing about this terrible movie is I think that that somewhere deep down there was actually a good movie to be had. Otherwise it's overwhelmingly meh with far too much pandering to "LOOK AT ME!! I'M IN 3D!!!", which makes it downright terrible.

Boiler Room is a 2000 American crime drama film written and directed by Ben Younger, and starring Giovanni Ribisi, Vin Diesel, Nia Long, Ben Affleck, Nicky Katt, Scott Caan, Tom Everett Scott, Ron Rifkin, and Jamie Kennedy.
The film is based on interviews the writer conducted with numerous brokers over a two-year period, and is inspired by the firm Stratton Oakmont and the life of Jordan Belfort, whose autobiography was later adapted into Martin Scorsese's 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Belfort.

loved both of them. some like it hot got a little too slapsticky towards the end, but I was surprised at how funny I found it. sadly, I don't think I had seen Marilyn in any movies before. I "get it" now- wow was she ####in sexy in that movie. indemnity was a great noir. so many have voiceover but here it worked because of the reason it was being used in the film- smartly done.

Just saw Captain Phillips, was a gripping and emotionally gut-wrenching biopic with an excellent central performance from Tom Hanks... recommended

Double indemnity is a classic noir.
Just watched American Hustle, and was joking that Christian Bale talked more in narration than in dialogue at times.
I thought it was good, not great.If you like noir, Out of the Past might be the best, The Ashphalt Jungle is very good, so are The Big Sleep and Murder, My Sweet (last two based on Raymond Chandler novels).
On a different note, saw Round Midnight and Bird again recently (funny, but there was more music than I remembered in the latter). Both won Oscars, Round Midnight for score, Bird for sound.

Captain Philips was an entertaining enough film but if you read even a little bit about the reality of the situation I think it takes away from the film version quite a bit.
Bottom line is that in reality Philips took a course that was much closer to the shore than corporate directive dictated and that is what allowed the pirates to get close enough to the ship to board it in the first place. The crew members do not seem to be as big of fans of Philips as the general public, or Philips himself, and frankly that takes away from the film for me.

The Other Guys - I know comedies aren't given nearly the weight of other movies, but I consistently laugh to pieces every time I see this movie. 4.5/5. ON FXX earlier tonight.

Yep, it's pretty good but not great, IMO. Just heard this morning that it's the highest grossing animated film of all time and 10th highest grossing movie ever. Never would have guessed that.

The more I think about it, the more I like it. It's not a non-linear story as much as it's interwoven. Real good performances by the two teenage actors. On Netflix and worth a watch, IMO.

Most of the women at work have been talking about Frozen. One girl is even having a Frozen viewing party for her daughter. Another lady said how she sold something that had to do with Frozen for like $300, so Im not surprised its the 10th highest grossing movie ever.

I watched Revenge of the Sith the other night. I have no problem with people ripping Phantom Menace and to a lesser degree, Attack of the Clones, but IMO Revenge of the Sith is pretty awesome with little to complain about. Everyone rips Lucas for the new ones, but I thought he hit the mark with Sith.

He did. My biggest problem with it, aside from the obviously terrible dialogue (better than the other two but still
at times), is the excessive visuals. Every square inch of the screen is flashing and spinning and zipping past to the point that I was surprised that I didn't read about anyone having seizures. Even the awesome light saber fights are excessive and just go on forever. Yeah we get it, they're super awesome laser sword fighters just move on already.Despite many major flaws in the new trilogy, and my goodness there are so very many, Lucas did craft a credible backstory to the formation of the Empire and I do appreciate that.

The Wolf of Wall Street - Well acted and it was fun watching all the excesses of the characters but it felt pretty much one note and ultimately fell flat for me. I think the problem for me was that so much of the time was spent showing the excesses of Leo that Scorsese pretty much ignored the human toll that was enabling Leo's excessive lifestyle. When it came time for all the principles to be indicted I had to think about what they actually did that was illegal.
I think that is where Boiler Room got it right in that it at least gave us a glimpse of the people that were being hurt by these brokerages.
Also I gotta say I thought Vin did a better job on his telephone closing scene in BR than Leo did in his WoWS telephone closing scene. I find typing that sentence as shocking as actually believing it.

Inside Llewyn Davis - I hate to say it but the Coen Bros just aren't bringing it like they used to. It is hard to find a bad apple among their first eight films but, frankly, six out or their last eight are "meh" at best. Two of the last three are downright difficult to watch (Llewyn Davis & A Serious Man).
Now the music was quite good in ILD but other than that it was a film about a bunch of boring to downright despicable characters enabling the main character who was little more than an uninteresting ###### bag. And even with the music I found it to be excessive to the point where the movie started to feel like little more than an vehicle for the Coen Bros to show the world how they are musically more enlightened than the rest of us.
I am fine with the notion that nothing really happens during the film, and as a rule I don't really mind despicable main characters either (Blue Jasmine was like that on both fronts but was still very entertaining). But none of it worked for me with ILD.

I was surprised that I really enjoyed TOG. I had zero expectations, in fact I had heard almost nothing about it when I caught it on cable. It was an unexpected pleasure and I would happily watch it again.

It seems like it's going to be about a bad-luck schlub with more misery than whatever comedy can make up for... not in the mood for that. But I'd be happy to be told otherwise.

Yeah you pretty much nailed it. I wouldn't say not to watch it based on my review, I often find that with Coen Bros films that I need to see them more than once to appreciate them. However, as with A Serious Man, I just don't think I am going to have the desire to do so. The humor aspect is also something that just fell short, I just didn't find the funny. John Goodman's dialogue, while nicely delivered, felt forced (not as bad as Richard Kind in ASM whose character almost made me nauseous to look at) and didn't really bring much funny. Timberlake was actually kind of okay and some scenes with Peter Scolari were decent enough.
Just nothing to move me enough to come back to it.

The stuff with Wahlberg and Eva Mendes kills me. And the soup kitchen...
First time I saw it I hated the scene where Wahlberg confronts the girl at dance class, but I didn't get it. Second time I understood why he acted like that and it made more sense.

Listening to the /Filmcast review of Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac, I am once again gleefully happy that I won't be seeing this film. Really, Von Trier is the very worst characature of an avant guarde filmmaker: pretentious, disgusting, and far less talented than he thinks he is.

It was a lot better then A Serious Man but the love fest Llewyn got from the critics was a bit much. 96% from top critics on RT. A Serious Man got 89% as well.

Man, this movie rocked. I think the best Marvel films are Iron Man and The Avengers. I could argue this is the better movie. Top-notch action, like you'd expect. The hand-to-hand combat is some of the best you'll ever see in a movie. Set piece after set piece of fantastic action. A lot better than the first Captain America, and it makes the Thor movies look pretty weak.

Finally saw Brazil. I didn't know too much about it besides it being a fantasy film, so I was really surprised at how funny it was; one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. I also really liked the art design, and you can tell it has had a large impact on other directors/films, especially Jean-Pierre Jeunet. Thought things fell off a bit in the final third of the film once he met the girl, but the ending made up for it. Also found it surprising that De Niro did a film like this, had no idea he was in it.
