I've seen so many, I am trying to come up with ideas for this year's 31. Scattershot of movies? All 70s? Try to tackle a series I haven't gotten to? All Stephen King?

As I prep for my October Horror Movie Fest where I aim to watch 31 scary movies, drop me some suggestions of possibly a little lesser known scary movies available on streaming.
I really want you to check out Messiah of Evil if you can find it. It looks like it's on Prime/AMC/Paramount+. I'm still not sure what I watched, and I planned on a rewatch. Just a bizarre, very visual movie I hadn't heard of.

Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is one that I recommend a lot in the vein of Scream, Tucker and Dale, and Cabin in the Woods. Not quite as good as those, but it's also the one people haven't gotten to. That is on AMC as well.

I was a big fan of Ti West's before X and Pearl. I have recommended all 3 of: Innkeepers, House of the Devil, and Sacrament. Those fly under the radar a little as well and look like they are on Peacock or Prime.

If over the top gore in a fun way is up anybody's alley, Deathgasm and Dead Snow 2 are on Peacock.

I'm sure more will pop out as I start my search...

Some horror movies I liked recently - I'm not sure how well known they are, though Bararian and Let the Right One In are well known, I think.
Speak No Evil (AMC+) 6.6 - I can't shake this one, I still think of it.
As Above, So Below (Prime) IMDB 6.2
Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (Prime) IMDB 7.5 (comedy horror)
Open Grave (Peacock) 6.2
Deadstream (AMC+) 6.4
Barbarian (hulu) 7
Black Mountain Side (Roku) 5.1
Let the Right One In (Prime) 7.9
All three Fear Street movies on Amazon
[REC] (Prime) 7.4
Spring (Vudu free) 6.7 - maybe more of a romance movie than horror? But there's a monster that eats people.
Cockneys vs. Zombies (Peacock) 5.9 (comedy zombies)
#Alive (Netflix) 6.3 Korean zombies
The Battery (Prime) 6.3 low budget zombies
The Night Eats the World (Prime) 6 French zombies
Bodies Bodies Bodies (Paramount+) 6.2
Sissy (AMC+) 6.1
I loved Barbarian and Let the Right One In. I have added Bodies, Bodies, Bodies and [Rec]...plus Bones and All. Forgot about that one.

Just added Pearl, X (forgot I've been wanting to see them) and House of the Devil...may add Innkeepers and Sacrament if I like the others.

I've watched this one several times now.

I would say that is about the order of quality too. House of the Devil is my favorite of the 3 I listed.

I've got some old school horror movies on disc that I just got/haven't played yet that I am doing for sure: Freaks, Nosferatu, 40's Phantom of the Opera, Creature of the Black Lagoon, Don't Look Now, Carrie, Rosemary's Baby. I have seen them all before but just been awhile and haven't checked out the discs yet.

It's not streaming, but my library system has it so maybe yours does. I love A Tale of Two Sisters. It's one of the first foreign horror movies I recommend to people along with stuff like Let the Right One In, [rec], and The Orphanage.

I may have to check my library. I liked The Orphanage and LTROI based on your suggestions.

No One Will Save You (Hulu)

Pretty good but unfortunately did not stick the landing.

Triangle is still my favorite indie/obscure horror movie of recent years.

What was that one that came out just a couple years ago where aliens attack a small American town in the 50's? Edit: The Vast of Night

That's a nice pull. I added it to my queue a couple months ago remembering vaguely really liking it and recommending it to people at the store. I think this will get added to my 31 for the month + (I am going to start on my day off tomorrow and cheat a tad).

Snake and Mongoose (2013 - on Prime) is like a poor man's Ford vs. Ferrari. It tells the story of the rivalry/friendship of 60s-70s drag racers Don "The Snake" Prudhomme and Tom "The Mongoose" McEwen.

There are a bunch of sports movie cliches and the family melodrama is pretty thick at times but I enjoyed my time watching it. It's a relatively low budget film but the filmmakers do a nice job of mixing in cool archival drag racing footage and the actors look enough like the real life drivers to be convincing. The casting overall is strong with Tim Blake Nelson and Fred Dryer (!) is memorable supporting roles.
Thanks for recommending this. I remember the whole thing when I was a boy, but i was too young to understand any of the real story. I enjoyed this and it move along pretty well. I did like seeing the old racing footage my brother and I used to watch on Wide World of Sports.

Here's a few that I have listed for October that I haven't seen yet. Not sure if I'll get to 31 on the month though. That's quite a commitment!

Mandy
Pieces
I Saw the Devil
Ichi the Killer
Hell House
Lake Mungo
Poughkeepsie Tapes
As Above, So Below
We Are Still Here
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

Any of these to avoid?
I've read good things about all and have had most of them in a queue for a while now.

I like you list, Jamny. A girl who walk alone… is on my list and I just started Mandy last night. Got about 20 mins in and realized I need to be fully attentive, it’s trippy.

As above, so below is ok and a decent watch on a dark night. Would actually watch a sequel if it happened.

I’m adding the rest to my que. thanks.

I wouldn't say any of the above that I've seen are avoids, but IMO Pieces doesn't hold up super well and Poughkeepsie Tapes is a tough watch from what I remember. I'm usually a sucker for found footage, so I loved Hell House, LLC and watched that with the wife last year. I still have yet to watch Mandy and will admit Mr. Cage is a reason I haven't tried yet. I also confuse Lake Mungo with Eden Lake. Pretty sure Mungo is the found footage we also watched and liked.

https://forums.footballguys.com/thr...ie-thread-rental-edition.724968/post-24523523 was my quick review of As Above, So Below. Not great, but I liked it.

Team Barbie here. Had no desire to see it but bought into Barbenheimer hype and checked them out. Found it so brilliant I went to see it a second time. And as good as Oppenheimer was, I thought Barbie was better.

Pieces and Poughkeepsie Tapes are actually the 2 I'm least confident about. I love found footage but most are not great.

I just looked at a random list of best found footage movies, and there are very few I don't like on there. CGI is a big no-no for this subgenre for me, so stuff like Paranormal Activity 2 isn't high on my list. Some don't do a great job with why it's a found footage movie either, but I still seem to like most I come across.

I love a well made found footage movie but think they are challenging to make. I'm overly critical with them and if there's any slip up, like when there's all of a sudden a different camera angle that shouldn't be there, it starts to lose me. Or if there shouldn't even be a camera at times. I also find they rely too much on jump scares. And sometimes the acting doesn't seem real. They also sometimes are too shaky or too dark. V/H/S didn't really need to be a FF movie. It was more of an anthology. But [REC] was amazing. So was The Taking of Deborah Logan.
Looking more into Poughkeepsie Tapes and I think I'll skip that one.

Not really that scary, but one of the ones I've been most impressed with was The Bay. I need to rewatch with fresh eyes, but I remember being impressed with how it was put together - using police dash cams, security cameras, things like that. I have a specific fear of old haunted insane asylums, so Grave Encounters has always been at the top of my list too.

I hear you about the acting. It's probably frowned upon to mess with them too much like Blair Witch nowadays though.

OMG - if people haven't seen One Cut of the Dead, please do so. I keep forgetting about that one. Also on AMC+/Shudder.
Yeah, I was shocked at how bad this was, then impressed by how awesome it was as it went along. Most of the crap parts of the first movie had great explanations in the second telling.

And the credits confuse me - are we watching the making of the fake making of a fake movie?

Thanks for that! Definitely some I haven't seen and a couple I haven't heard of.
I would flip flop your #1 and #2, but the original NotLD holds a special place for me. It's my favorite movie of any kind. My parents let me stay up late to watch it one night. I don't remember how old I was but probably like 9 or 10. I had nightmares for two nights. They started all over again the next night. I was hooked after that and watched it every time it came on TV.
I would probably move Train to Busan to #3 and move the rest down. After #7, it's hard to judge. I would have the original Dawn of the Dead on the list instead of the 2004 version and probably put it at #4, again because of the experience. We got someone to sneak us in to the theater to see it when it was released. I was 14. Might be #3 for me.

Great list...thx!

I added the 90s remake of Night of the Living Dead as a possibility for my 31. That one worth a watch? I forget that Savini directed it.

I saw the original Dawn of the Dead so long ago that I can't rank it, and I haven't found it on any of my streaming services. When I saw it originally, I only had NOTLD to compare it to, and I didn't like it as much... but I know everyone likes it, so I'll give it another shot when it pops up on one of my services.

I will say, though - I'm having a hard time making it through some of the 70s and 80s zombie movies. I've pretty much stopped watching them for a while now after trying to slog through some from that era that have relatively high ratings... I can only take so much. I also haven't been loving Romero movies as much as I expected to.

I'm having a rough go of 80s horror movies. Time has not been kind to the movies of the decade in general IMO, but especially so in horror movies. So many crappy sequels and slashers to wade through.

Probably better off watching the TV shows The Hitchhiker or Friday the 13th (which had nothing to do with the movies). Schlocky as heck but at least they were aware of it.

I remember liking the Friday the 13th show at the time. Wasn't it about a family that ran an antique store that had weird/haunted collectables or something. I also watched the Freddy show too, of course.

Nice, I knew Criterion would deliver. In October they have 3 horror themes that have a ton of interesting looking titles. 90s Horror, Art House Horror, and Pre-Code Horror.

I liked it even as a purist for the original. They do some cool twists from the first one. Not as good obviously, but worth checking out, imo.

I kind of prefer my horror movies that way. I actually don’t love ones that are actually too scary.

There's still good stuff out there, but when I try to take my nostalgia blinders off a bit, I realize just how dominant that stuff was in the 80s and how bad many of those franchises got. Hell, watching the OG Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th and I start to doubt how good they were to begin with. Maybe I'm just mostly done with slashers as I turn into an old grump, and that's fine too. As my warm-up for October I watched a Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and Halloween 3 double feature. I had fun with those, except now I have the Silver Shamrock song stuck in my head.

Some good upcoming 4k's this next year.

Maltese Falcon, African Queen, the Star Trek TNG movies (I'm in for Generations), and most importantly...The Abyss. I'll still believe that one when I see it, but I'm cautiously optimistic.

Now...about Aliens and True Lies...
Well, we might be getting closer on The Abyss...
