Dìdi (2024): 4/5
A coming-of-age film about a Taiwanese-American growing in up Fremont, California, during the mid-2000s. Excellent acting, funny script, and a great soundtrack.

Network (1976): 4/5
Black comedy about obsession with TV ratings. Fantastic script and phenomenal acting, especially from Faye Dunaway, who'd win an Oscar for her role.

I tried watching a movie called Hidden (Duffer bros, some Skarsgard, looks like a possible zombie movie). Roku app claims it's there, but when you click it a different movie by the same name is shown... and this is a laughably bad movie. I don't know if the plot is bad or not, but the mechanics of how it's filmed and the sound quality are sub-p0rn level.

This happens a lot with Roku

Watched Rebel Ridge on Netflix this weekend. Meh, blatant Rambo rip off but I'll say, I liked the lead (Aaron Pierre) just not in this role.

Terry Richmond enters the town of Shelby Springs on a simple but urgent mission-- post bail for his cousin and save him from imminent danger. But when Terry’s life’s savings is unjustly seized by law-enforcement, he’s forced to go head to head with local police chief Sandy Burnne and his combat-ready officers. Terry finds an unlikely ally in court clerk Summer McBride and the two become ensnared in a deep-rooted conspiracy within the remote township. As the stakes turn deadly, Terry must call upon his mysterious background to break the department’s hold on the community, bring justice to his own family-- and protect Summer in the process.

The One I Love (2014) - Mark Duplass and Elizabeth Moss go to a secluded house to try and save their marriage. Things get pretty interesting after that

Can’t remember if someone mentioned it here or I saw something about it elsewhere

I’ll just say I really liked it

(y)It's a clever movie and moves at a perfect pace with even keeled acting. Really enjoyed this one.

The end covers it a little, but too much obviously good guy/bad guy going on in the writing for me, so it never really elevated despite a couple good performances.

That was probably me. I liked it, glad they didn't explain stuff.

Godzilla Minus One - It started off great and I loved the parts where Godzilla was actually in the movie but the backstory of the main character and some other scenes had me fast-forwarding quite a bit. Like when they were fixing up the plane. Needed more Godzilla. Better than some other attempts though.

Quiet Place: Day One - Enjoyed it more than I expected. Didn't waste time getting started and kept the tension mostly throughout. Great effects of NYC being destroyed.

Finished up Old Henry last night, classic western with a twist. Was very good, if you like the genre, give it a go.

Old Henry is an action-Western about a widowed farmer and his son who warily take in a mysterious, injured man with a satchel of cash. When a posse of men claiming to be the law come for the money, the farmer must decide whom to trust. Defending against a siege of his homestead, he reveals a talent for gunslinging that surprises everyone, calling his true identity into question.

Caught both Escape Room movies.

I enjoy a good escape room so the rooms themselves were fun, minus the death. Acting was terrible, editors were idiots and I think the writers gave up at some point so they weren't great but they were fun enough for mindless entertainment.

Added to the queue… and I followed a link on Tim Blake Nelson and found a bonkers looking movie called Colossal that went on the list too.

Colossal is pretty good. The concept is so ridiculous but it somehow makes sense most of the time.

Nelson also turned up recently as the CIA director in Netflix spy thriller The Bricklayer. It was an offbeat casting choice but he nailed it as usual..

The kid decided on Good Will Hunting tonight mostly because she thought Matt Damon looked hot in the picture she saw. She definitely liked it a lot, especially the love story and all the banter between the Boston crew. I was hoping maybe she would get some inspiration from the therapy part but nope that didn’t budge her an inch on wanting to talk with someone.

True Romance

I know I watched this before but remembered none of it. I liked it okay. One interesting part is seeing how derivative of this story a lot of Tarantino's other work is. Another is that it is definitely a Tony Scott movie - nobody did the pan into quick edit quite like him.

Headed to see Laura tomorrow in 35mm for Noir City with Eddie Mueller.

@krista4 did you end up catching anything?

Sorry, I've thought several times that I needed to report back, and then didn't find the right opportunity. Unfortunately we only made it to one, but it was a doozy: Odd Man Out (per your and Ee's recommendations). Wow. I've been haunted by it for the past two weeks. What a gorgeous, brilliant movie. And Eephus was not kidding about young James Mason being extremely swoon-worthy.

I'm on my couch right now, not feeling well for a few days, so want to fire up a movie. Anyone have a good idea for something streaming that's good but not something I have to think about a ton, maybe a thriller or such?

I’m checking out Sicario.

My first date with my wife was Good Will Hunting. Great movie. Robin Williams hit an absolute home run with his performance. The scene with them in the park is as good as it gets for movie scenes.

But does she like apples? ;)

An American in Paris?

Glad you really liked it. It’s very well told and does the thing where on its face it’s a genre movie but there’s actually something about human compassion and community and the risks we will or won’t take to help others. I saw Laura today which is none of those things. There’s no message, nothing at all to learn. It’s just a juicy murder mystery. Have you seen that one? Eddie Mueller gave it a lot of credit for firmly establishing the style and tone of what noirs and crime films would be. He also took a little shot at stealing shows like Presumed Innocent saying it doesn’t take 8 hours to make a good whodunnit, Laura does it perfectly in 88 minutes.

It's been a while but I remember it as a traditional upper-crust murder mystery with some noir trappings. Unless I'm thinking of Gilda instead of Laura :bag:

You have it right. The noir elements really come from the dialogue being so acidic and Dana Andrews does a lot to set-up the kind of detective we imagine leading a noir. It never gets too deep or too dark, I always gliding along looking to provide perfect entertainment. It knows it’s having fun that’s for sure.

Odd Man Out just unexpectedly came up in a podcast I was listening to. One note that I thought was interesting was is that the British police were stylized and tailored to resemble NAZIs. I thought that was a subtle but very bold move for 1947.

Civil War was a lot different than I thought it would be and that is a good thing.

They made both sides look bad for fighting a losing battle without preaching as I thought it would.

Worth a watch IMO.

Megalopolis - Was super excited to go see this tonight. I mean -an epic Francis Ford Coppola movie? Sign me up. Well, wow. What an absolute piece of dung this is. Just a complete mess. And with so much contempt for the viewers. He clearly thinks we are idiots.

My recommendation - skip it. But at least wait until its on streaming.

Man from Earth (Prime): 2007 movie with a massive 7.8 rating at IMDB. I can give away the basics because they happen in the first five minutes: a guy working in a faculty decides to move on, his coworkers/friends ask why, he reveals he doesn't age and moves on every 10 years for the past 14,000 years so people won't notice he doesn't age.

This is a cheap movie - nothing really happens, just some conversations among friends. The sound synching with the video is pretty rough for the first few minutes. Some shots have questionable focus choices. However, this is a really smart movie in my opinion. Someone really thought this through and vetted it with experts in different fields. All of the stuff we assume about someone 14k years old doesn't really fit with how human brains work, or how things have changed, or what people knew at any given time.

There was one choice that I really didn't like. It led to some interesting discussion, but you could see it coming and I hoped they were faking us out. Anyway, that didn't ruin things.

Totally worth watching in my opinion... though I have no intention of seeking out the sequel based on the preview they showed at the end.

File this under "Things I wish I could buy stock in". The plot synopsis sounded beyond dumb and the pretentiousness looked off the charts.

One of my favorites

I watched some Aussie Time travel movie with smoking drugs being the catalyst... Kinda funny.

Watched a home double feature with Floppinha... Becky, Wrath of Becky. Over the top gore teenage girl revenge fest. I assume came from a graphic novel. I might be a little nervous that she wanted to watch the second one immediately after the first. Some interesting casting (Kevin James as a neo Nazi) and despite the gore, some ok writing for the bad guys... To a point.

From all the coverage that's come out about this movie, were you really that surprised it was terrible?

Not shocked but disappointed.
Despite the horrible reviews, I'm still interested only because the visuals in the trailer look good. But I'm not going to pay to see it.

Wolfs on Apple. Stars Clooney and Pitt.

You know what you're in for. Clever banter. Some light action. We enjoyed it on a rainy Saturday evening.

(y)Really enjoyed the first one and Kevin James going against type was a nice touch. Second one was good enough as a sequel goes.
