Anyone watched The Bikeriders on Peacock? Got it qued up. Looks decent.
Made it 20 minutes and turned it off. That female narrators voice was causing me severe displeasure. Just couldn't do it any longer.
You didn't miss much. I had somewhat high hopes for this one and it way under-delivered.
Everything felt like it was too heavily lifted from Scorsese. I liked Jodie Comer in the Last Duel but she was rough in this. Her accent work was really bad to the point of neing like an SNL character, she was just 100% the wrong choice for this part. It had potential and I thought Austin Butler was elecric but it didn't work. I will say the soundtrack was great and it did look good- was filmed by people who knew what they were doing visually telling a story. Even if the script didn't.
Had the same experience @ 30 minutes in I turned it off. Felt I had suffered enough. Comer’s accent was annoying as F.

It was bad. I think eventually you had kind of adjust to it but it does kill the movie. I will say it was at least entertaining but just not good if that makes sense.

Watched Argylle (2024) for the free Apple TV weekend because we generally like spy spoofs but man, it was awful. The setup was kind of clever for about a half hour but the story got completely wrapped around the gimmick from there on out. This is pretty typical for Matthew Vaughn whose movies tend to run out of ideas before climaxing in ridiculously choreographed violence. There were so many forced twists and turns that I stopped caring long before the credits rolled.

I was surprised by how few movies are available in the Apple TV+ catalog. I scrolled through the entire thing and it had to be less than a hundred films. I guess the TV series are good but I'd prefer more choices for one-off viewing.
I added Apple+ to my services on JustWatch and it had 1 movie from my list of over 120 movies I’d like to watch: Greyhound.

Hundreds of Beavers

I admire the moxie it took to actually get the film made. And I do like some Buster Keaton like slapstick. But the gimmick wore thin after about a half hour and I stopped watching.

Coda was Apple+. I do think their movies are a bit limited. They do have some good documentaries though. Velvet Underground doc from a few years ago on there. Bread & Roses doc about women in the Taliban on there too.

I enjoyed Coda, Cha Cha Real Smooth and the Beastie Boys documentary the last time I had free access to Apple TV+ but I was surprised that they haven't expanded their feature film catalog much since then.

I'm going to try to fit in Blitz before the paywall closes again.

The narrative gimmick of the reporter interviewing Comer's character detracted from the flow of the story (such as it was).

I looked last night and it seemed like there weren't very many movies. Are there more once you sign up? Didn't take advantage of the free weekend since I'm watching football and trying to binge things on paramount+ but it says I can get a free one week trial so that's something you could do Eephus unless you've already used it.

We have subscription... Not many movies that aren't paywalled.

I watched Blitz (2024) to finish off the free Apple TV weekend extravaganza. It's a WWII homefront film from Steve McQueen (the British director not the American actor) about a London family separated during German air raids. It's a McQueen film so there are beautifully shot sequences and racial themes (the young boy is mixed race).

I thought it did a good job recreating the time and place and capturing the terror of living under bombardment . My main criticism was the intercutting between the stories of the boy and his mother (played by Saoirse Ronan) along with flashbacks, dream sequences and some artistic interludes made the movie seem a bit disjointed. Musician Paul Weller had a role as the family patriarch which was kind of cool.

I could have gone my entire life without seeing Rosemary's Baby.

It compounded being stupid by being stupifyingly long. I have no clue how or why it could possibly have become the "classic" it's considered to be today.

Public service announcement: Apple TV+ is free this weekend. It looks like most of their exclusive content is series rather than feature films but I'm going to try to watch a few movies before the paywall slams shut.
I always recommend Greyhound for folks that have a shot at Apple TV. Tom Hanks as commander of an escort convoy from the US to England during WWII. Thought it was great if you haven't seen it.

The best part of the movie was Dua Lipa in the beginning. Looked amazing.
As soon as she raced off on the motorcycle in what was one of the worst CGI scenes ever, I knew I was in trouble.

Not really. AppleTV is pretty dumb imo. If we weren’t sharing passwords with friends, there’s no way I would pay for it.

Agreed. And we're subscribers, but only because it was bundled with something else.

If we had to pay for it solo, I could see doing it for a month at a time to binge their shows- almost all of which are good to very good, none of which are top tier (I know Lasso has its big fans).

Argylle had some of the worst CGI I've seen in a recent film. I almost convinced myself that the dodgy CGI in Henry Cavill's scenes was done intentionally to emphasize the narrative gimmick.

Nightbitch last night with Amy Adams…it was OK, some decent comedy / body horror, definitely seems like it skews towards female viewership though
It was interesting and I liked the message - but they sure did beat you over the head with it. It's not a movie I would want to watch again, but I appreciate that movies like this can still be made in-between all the Blockbusters.

Yeah there’s enough one there that I might subscribe for a month and power through
Wife wants to watch shrinking and and I’ve heard severance is good? Anything else?
We already binged Black Bird awhile back

And I’m not watching Ted Lasso

Agree, I re-upped for Silo, cancelling now.

Best show on the platform but to each their own.

I liked Slow Horses when we had access the last time but not enough to try to binge a season during the free weekend.

As I said, pretty much all of their shows are decent to quite good. But id stick to the following:

Slow Horses is genuinely good, but took a bit to grab me (maybe partway through S1) before I was all in binging the ever loving hell out of it..

Bad Monkey was fun if you like Vince Vaughn.
Silo is interesting and well done Sci-fi, but maybe not for everybody.

1st season of For All Mankind was pretty great, 2nd also quite good, but off the cliff it went. Still worth a watch for the 1st 2 seasons.

Shrinking and Lasso both have a similar sweet approach to humor, so if you like Shrinking consider Lasso (which arguably tries for more as a TV show)

I enjoyed the Big Door Prize quite a bit for quirky, concept comedy.

For more sci-fi, Foundation and Monarch: Legacy of Monsters are decent enough if more adult scifi or younger Godzilla type stuff interest you... But both are also skippable. Good, but nowhere near great.

But you *must watch See. Imagine a post apocalyptic mad max type world in the future where everybody is blind. Hijinx ensue. (*Note... See is terrible, but I love it)

Take this TV stuff to the Netflix thread. We stan cinema here.

I enjoyed Furiosa. Some cheesy CGI and a somewhat tired storyline but it was a fun ride. I watched it one segment at a time so maybe that helped with the length of it since it is a long movie. I tend to really like origin stories and I like how it set up Fury Road. I think I actually liked this more than Fury Road.
I liked Furiosa better than Fury Road also.
Not me, Fury Road looked a lot better and was perfect entertainment in how singular it was. Furiosa is good, I thought Hemsworth was so much fun. Someone biger and stronger for Furiosa would have been better IMO, ATJ is just so tiny. But it's a great addition to the series and Miller still finds ways to add lots of things we haven't seen before.

Mr. Nobody - Jared Leto is the last living mortal and contemplates his life choices or something. Beautifully shot, explores some interesting themes. I enjoyed it

It’s insufferable. I don’t like it at all. But anyway back to our movies.

I love soccer and I avoided it for the same reasons. Soccer is just the sport that bonds the group together.
The show really isn't about soccer.

You should at least give it a chance.

I started watching Lasso and had major reservations about the humor sweetness. Kept waiting for some darkness or edge. But eventually (about 4 or so eps in) , the sweetness and fantastic characters really won me over. Couldve been the covid zeitgeist making me more susceptible to it... Dunno. But it's smartly funny, sweet and and gets into some deeper things along with some interesting tv in trying things out (moreso S2).

Keep in mind, re: too soccery... They are college football coaches who approach all of it from that standpoint as outsiders. Plus, soccer isn't really what it's about.

ugh, my dumb *** opened tik tok last night and watched a Baldwin equate hollywood with evil (probably is) and the proof is that all xmas movies released now have satan themes

Got about halfway through Interstellar last night. Man.....it's a long one. Not in love with it, but I suppose I'll finish. I should have paid attention in school more because some of this science, I can't understand.

It’s insufferable. I don’t like it at all. But anyway back to our movies.
At what point did Santa... sorry... Satan... steal your soul?
is this also a sneaky reference to that god awful Christmas movie with Jack black about the dyslexic kid?
ugh, my dumb *** opened tik tok last night and watched a Baldwin equate hollywood with evil (probably is) and the proof is that all xmas movies released now have satan themes

That was the dumbest Baldwin of all, wasn't it? That born again schlep Baldwin Tim I think? The blond one? Dumber than a box of hair.

I looked last night and it seemed like there weren't very many movies. Are there more once you sign up? Didn't take advantage of the free weekend since I'm watching football and trying to binge things on paramount+ but it says I can get a free one week trial so that's something you could do Eephus unless you've already used it.

Yeah there’s enough one there that I might subscribe for a month and power through
Wife wants to watch shrinking and and I’ve heard severance is good? Anything else?
We already binged Black Bird awhile back

And I’m not watching Ted Lasso

The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Not exactly a silent film I could recommend to just anyone. It's mostly typical of the silent era - the overly expressive acting and the constant sounds of unrelated music. But I stuck it out to the end and actually did appreciate the allegory which to me is "power persists".

I read a couple other takes on the film and mine is subtly different - there will always be insane and powerful Caligari types (be they a Kaiser or a Fuhrer) that will take advantage of the "sleepwalking" populace. I think the cherry on top that this film states is that the failed powerful will turn the tables on the weak and say "oh no, it was YOU that was the insane one".

Never heard of this but it has Amy Adams in it so will eventually watch it.

She’s very good in it, but if you have a “thing” for her and that’s why you’d watch, you may be disappointed.

Yeah they make he look like those CELEBS WITHOUT MAKEUP tabloid pictures…and some other stuff I don’t want to spoil

She's very cute but I'm more a fan of her acting than her looks.
