There's just not too many good movies right now...kinda sucks. Wake me up when the next Dune gets here.
I just looked at upcoming releases and stopped in mid-February as it got depressing not finding anything worth going to see :kicksrock:
Wait did you miss this?

As a fan of the original Nosferatu and having seen Egger's version, I decided to check out Werner Herzog's 1979 remake. Pretty impressed with it. I'm sure some consider it boring but I found the trance-like feeling of it all to be very effective. There are a few scenes that looked like paintings. This one in particular. I wouldn't say it's better than the original and really wouldn't call this one scary, but it's a solid version of the Dracula tale.

Sherlock Holmes (Max) - the Guy Ritchie / Robert Downey Jr one with Rachel McAdams at the peak of her powers. It was fun, not sure what else to say about it - pretty 50/50 blend of Holmes and Ritchie. IMDB 7.6 seems a little high, but it’s worth watching for sure.

Got about halfway through Interstellar last night. Man.....it's a long one. Not in love with it, but I suppose I'll finish. I should have paid attention in school more because some of this science, I can't understand.

Sometimes they need helmet, sometimes they do not need helmet.
don't let scoreman know...

I tried to finish this but the rock 'em sock 'em space ship race to the mothership or whatever was a bridge too far for me. I don't care how this one ends it got stupid fast. There were hallmarks of a decent movie but the editors of this one spit the bit.

We've all got different tastes, don't we?

That was probably the best part of the movie and it's hard to understand how it wouldn't be found exciting.

My suspension of disbelief broke long before.

I can agree that the film does ask a lot of the viewer.

I watched Interstellar last week after only seeing when it first came out on video. I think the whole Matt Damon storyline could have been done better but I'll chalk it up to space madness and not let it take away from what is a very good movie. Not the #1 sci-fi but solid.

Definitely not my preferred genre. I can see why others enjoy it though.

Related, I never took physics in HS. :bag:

It’s Science-FICTION not Science-FACT, jack

I liked Interstellar, but I truly don’t think it deserves the almost 2001 level of reaction it gets. It’s not the best anything, not by a long shot. But also I find all the harsh criticism of it to be totally off base.

It was Science-STUPID. Cheesy acting to boot. So nice that after all those years Matt whatever was freshly shaven and tan and Anne Hathaway had perfect makeup throughout. Ugh.

I don't think I like Christopher Nolan. It's a me thing. As I said earlier, 10% of the world can't stomach cilantro. I'm part of the 10% that thinks Nolan movies taste like soap. It's not you, it's me.

There’s a group of people who strongly dislike him so yeah you might be part of that 10%. Is there anything you did like? Memento? Dunkirk?

Never saw Momento, but willing to try it out.

I thought Dunkirk was visually stunning and super intense in parts, but the lack of character development is where you lose me. I'd rank Platoon 2 stars ahead of Dunkirk.

I just watched the Dylan movie with my dad this week....that's my lane. Loved that movie but I'm sure it comes with its fair share of criticism.

I think Nolan relies on visuals and a fast paced plot to cover up for his deficiencies as a director/film maker. Slow down, fella.

Curious what his lover thinks of him in the sack.
100% agree that his weakness is in character development and humanity. He is less about the human experience and more about the movie going experience. He is creating amusement rides. He's just a pure master of it. Hitchcock did a lot of this too. It's an approach but I can see how it doesn't work for some. I like Nolan a lot, but I do concede his weaknesses. He's just so good at the big set pieces and the big ideas and his control of the medium is insane. But he does lack heart. Oppenheimer is probably the closest he's come to really getting to the heart of people and their relationships and development which is why he was awarded so heavily.

For me, Memento is his best movie. Now, it's a ride as well. Perfectly designed, put together quite intricately. Every piece has to be just exactly where it is or it won't work at all. There is just almost nothing quite like it even if it's mostly an experiment in form. For me the characters are realized enough and the experiment so original and flawlessly executed that it makes a perfect movie. Insomnia is a banger too and much more character driven. I would like to see another movie like that from him but also they don't make those kind of 7, Zodiac, Kiss the Girls movies anymore. That all goes to an 8 episode streamer now. So I guess I do recommend Memento and Insomnia even if you aren't a Nolan fan. Those ealrly movies are a little different IMO.

Definitely check out Momento. Not a big sprawling flick and its a trip.

This is fun for sure

The Six Triple Eight (2024 - streaming on Netflix) is a WWII drama that tells the true story of a battalion of African-American women who sorted mail for the troops in the European theater. It's a Tyler Perry movie so there's lots of sentimentality and humor in a mostly entertaining package. His script tries to stuff too much into its two hour runtime and the narrative is consequently rather disjointed, especially the last half hour. Kerry Washington gives a good performance as the commanding officer and there are some fun cameos.

Perry made Six Triple Eight at his studio in Georgia. It's not a bad looking film although it's heavy on that gauzy diffused light that's come to signify the past. In spite of some dodgy CGI is the opening battlefield sequence, the production values are vastly improved compared to the Madea pictures that made his fortune.

ETA: Oh hell yeah, Madea Goes to Jail is streaming on Tubi

To be fair, can't we do the bolded with just about every movie ever made? They are movies, that is part of the package.

I get it, and I do that a lot when I am not enjoying what I am watching. If I am sucked into the movie, I DGAF about that crap. When I am not having fun, I start nitpicking everything.

Exactly. Kubrick gets this criticism as well. I still argue that The Prestige has heart and is the closest he comes on that front. I also get that I am a bigger fan of that one than most, and I didn't like Oppenheimer as much as most people.

I should rewatch Memento, it's been quite a while since I've seen that one.

Have I told you about my condition?

Conclvae, wow.

I know some dont like the 3rd act but I think it actually improved the movie. I am a huge fan of this kind of secret scheming backroom thing and the end worked for me. I liked this a lot. Disclaimer that I went to Catholic School for 12 years and was in Rome this past summer.

Anora was good, although it started off a little uncomfortable because I told the wife “I heard it was good” and it opens up with a lap dance scene so of course I get the “oh I see why you wanted to watch it” followed by 100 questions about strip clubs.

Memento has been sitting at the top of my queue for 2 years, screaming at me to watch it... and I just watch some crapass movie instead every time. I can't explain it.

I joined someone who wanted to see it and it is not my genre cup of tea at all, so I'm not starting from a place of wanting to love it....but Nosferatu sucked.

But I can go my whole life without seeing anything in the vampire genre and be perfectly content.

Civil War- really well made, great sound and visuals but not sure what the point was exactly. I didn't feel much watching this. Killer soundtrack though.
