I miss Siskel and Ebert. Those guys were my cinematic North Stars. Used to record their show on my VCR each week. Refused to go to a movie that wasn't 2 thumbs up (unless one made a compelling case for their thumb up). Had a couple of Ebert's books. Roeper was pretty good too, though I missed the magic of the OGs together. They were special.

Gladiator 2..... It was fine. Tad too long. Missing some oomph the first one had. The Emperor's were way more annoying than Phoenixs version

Yes those twin emperors were awful but not in a way that made the movie better. Just bad performances.

Wallace and Grommit: Vengeance Most Fowl (Netflix). I’m not a WG guy, but I watched a lot of Shaun the Sheep with the kids and always enjoyed it. This was a lot of fun - the little gnomebots were consistently funny, as was the penguin. I liked the Shaun the Sheep farmer cameo. A surprising thing is that this almost lands in the horror category - the middle part totally fits.

I just saw that a new cut of DIG! , called DIG! XX and 2.5 hours long(!), is coming to theaters in a couple of weeks.
Is that the one circling around The Brian Jonestown massacre? If so, one of my favorite docs.
All i remember is the chick from the dandy Warhols playing the tambourine topless and that Anton from BJM came off a a huge knob, but I do recall liking it

Tried to get the wife to watch this a few weeks back so maybe I’ll check out the new cut when it’s streaming

ARQ (Netflix): 2016 time loop movie, IMDB 6.3. Very claustrophobic setting - the whole thing happens in a dingy house. I saw this years ago but had forgotten almost everything. Since I’m watching time loop movies lately, I thought I’d give it another try. I liked the evolution as it went on, and the ending was unique. I’d rate it higher than the 6.3.

Liked this one, think i had it in my top 100

What’s the movie with a long sequence where someone gets… new eyes installed? in a gross house with some underground surgeons who kind of abandon him there?

ETA: Minority Report. Something about ARQ reminded me of that.

I watched The Worst Person in the World list night on Hulu. What a great movie, I was riveted from the jump. Nothing ground breaking, just a young woman trying to find her way in her career and love life. The quality of the film making and performances really stand above most of the movies I've seen recently. I will probably rewatch this over the weekend.
It gripped me also - just finished it. Some mixture of identifying with some parts of her, recognizing parts in other people, and finding her compelling. I agree, this was really well acted. “That was hurtful. I don’t know what to say” was acted really well. I also liked how understated her story was at the end, taking photos of Aksel and finally returning to that to become her own person.

Also think you’d like The Discovery

Watched Rebel Moon: Part II on a flight yesterday. Only because I love 300 and had seen the first.

Both parts are pretty bad.

I like to call it "Cringey Steampunk Star Wars"

Solid 4.5/10 but I'll probably watch the rest of them (Zach Snyder said 5 or 6?) if I'm bored.
I liked the first one I fell asleep during the 2nd one I might give it another shot
Well if you plan on watching the entire 5 or 6 movies I guess give 'er a shot. There were moments in the 2nd one that were OK, but it's pretty damn cheesy and predictable. OK for popcorn flick and/or watching on a flight or something.

Avoid: "Morgan". An artificial intelligence in human form attacks a doctor, and the company responsible for the AI investigates it's product to determine its viability moving forward. It's a great idea, but executed very badly. There's your ordinary problems like poor acting and editing, but there's a howlingly ridiculous twist so telegraphed it would make Shyamalan blush. Your time is valuable, don't waste it on this.
I wish I read this about 2 hours ago.

Brutalist best movie I've seen in a long time. Its 3.5 hour runtime seemed much quicker than most 100 min movies
That run time has given wife and I pause about seeing it.
Same here. I was in NYC over Xmas and planned to see it there on opening day in IMAX. Too cold to walk that far, that week. I finally got around to it yesterday and saw it in IMAX that was essentially and private screening since no one else was there.

Cruel & Unusual (Tubi): 2014 sort of time loopy Canadian movie. A guy accidentally kills his wife then dies right after. He awakens to relive the evening. He is in some prison that makes him relive the day as punishment, unable to change how it goes.

I’m not really sure what was going on here, though anyone our age who spent roughly 10,000 hours trying to find any way to have fun with a calculator (55378008) knows that when you get sent to room 7734, you’re in hell.

This was a dreary movie and despite a somewhat clever ending, I can’t recommend it.

The first Vacation is funny. The others I find terrible.

I'm trying to think of a comedy sequel that was funnier than the original but all I'm coming up with are action/comedy movies that were "better" because of higher production values.
Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls
Scary movie 2 maybe? Which one has the strong hand scene
That is a good call too. Chris Elliot, David Cross, and Tim Curry!
And Kathleen Robertson. Yowkers.

I feel like if you'r e a horrible person and end up in hell Rebel Moon parts 1 & 2 would be playing in the waiting room. And if you were really, really horrible, it would be the director's cut.

I mean, I don't see how 300 was such an awesome flick and the director got his hands on the "space" version of it and just mucked it up so badly.

Thanks man! Been rewatching their show on YT recently. The Worst Movies of {fill in the year} are so so so so good. Much of their criticisms still work today. God, they were great.

I'll check out the doc.

Anyone else an AMC+ member? I finally got one last week. $25/mo for 3 movies a week. Any movies: any time any format. You cannot cancel for 3 months.

Watched Nickel Boys yesterday. Brilliant. First person camerawork really ended up working well, despite being initially distracting/confusing.

I've never been a big audiobook fan outside of some non-fiction books, but I checked out 1984 with Andrew Garfield, Andrew Scott, Cynthia Erivo and Tom Hardy (as BB) and thought it was really good. So I checked out the movie with John Hurt. Well done and really captured the book without cutting out too much. Hurt was great in it.

I've watched my share of B&W movies, from old horror, to Marlon Brando and James Cagney flicks, to a deep dive into Kurosawa that I posted here years ago. I've seen some of the classics too but my overall exposure has been lacking, so I've decided to work on that.

First up, The Third Man. I tried watching this years ago but never finished it, so I gave it another shot. Great acting, solid story, the music was a bit distracting at times but the star of the show was the backdrop of war torn Vienna. I wish I watched it before going to Vienna last year but was still able to place locations in it with the help of Google maps. I probably wouldn't have known the connection between the city and the movie if not for an Anthony Bourdain episode. I'll probably watch it again some day and read up on the "making of" to learn more.

Next up, Notorious. I've seen a bunch of Hitchcock, mostly the horror ones, but I gotta say, I really liked this one. Excellent acting, snappy dialogue, some tense moments and a great pace overall. I've probably only seen Grant in North by Northwest and Bergman in Casablanca, both of which I saw many years ago and will rewatch. This one made me realize I need to look into more old classics.

I also zipped through One Million BC (1940). Pretty bad. They really didn't care much about cruelty to animals back then, did they? The fight with the human sized dinosaur was hilarious though.

I too found the zither music in The Third Man to be very distracting and frankly annoying.

Notorious rules. Top shelf Hitchcock.

@jamny I have a growing list of classic movies I could recommend! :excited:

go on
Ethnic cleansing against Jews was occurring in Ethiopia. These people were fleeing being massagered, but were being stopped from leaving the country. Many were being smuggled out of Ethiopia to UN refugee camps in Sudan. The Sudan government was getting a stipend for each refugee, but soldiers would regularly raid these camps to rape and kill. Israeli Masad set up a fake " diving resort" in Muslim controlled Sudan. The refugees were regularly smuggled out of the camps to this resort and picked up by boats from a ship offshore. This happened many times until the Sudan military caught on and tried to stop this. A daring rescue got the last group out, but many more still remained in Ethiopia.

Saw this on Netflix.

Got invited to a sneak peek last night of You're Cordially Invited starring Will Farrell and Reese Witherspoon which is officially released on Amazon Prime today. My wife and I actually liked it quite a bit. I had fairly low expectations going in, but I was entertained and definitely had some good laughs. It has an NFL player cameo in it too. :-)

Sure! I'm only early in compiling a list.
That's why I love the Youtube.tv unlimited DVR. I have over 100 movies on it after skimming through TCM for the last year or so for anything that looks interesting.
The Killers - Lancaster/Gardner
The Killing - Kubrick
Seven Days In May/Patterns - Scripts written by Rod Seeking
In A Lonely Place/To Have And Have Not - Bogart
A Face In The Crowd/All The King's Men - relevant to today's political climate
Mildred Pierce - Joan Crawford
Out Of The Past - Mitchum
Sunset Boulevard
Shadow Of A Doubt/Strangers On A Train - Hitchcock
High Noon - Cooper/Kelley
All About Eve - Bette Davis

There's more, but that's a good "best of" start for me.

this is top 3 of all time for me.

the zither music is amazing. as is every other component of this one from direction, acting, writing, cinematography on down... and it has my favorite ever closing scene to a movie.

Lots of good trivia for this Capra film:

Friz Freleng's unpublished memoirs mention that this was one of his favorite films, and that it contains at least three things which the character "Bugs Bunny" was based on: the character Oscar Shapely's (Roscoe Karns) personality, the manner in which Peter Warne (Clark Gable) was eating carrots and talking quickly at the same time, and an imaginary character mentioned once to frighten Oscar Shapely named "Bugs Dooley." Other mentions of "Looney Tunes" characters from the film include Alexander Andrews (Walter Connolly) and King Westley (Jameson Thomas) being the inspirations for Yosemite Sam and Pepé Le Pew, respectively.

When Clark Gable showed up for work on the first day, he reportedly said, grimly, "Let's get this over with." Gable was loaned to this film by MGM as punishment for his affair with Joan Crawford.

Colbert only agreed to do the film when they doubled her salary.

Similar to Casablanca, the leads didn't think much of the movie they were making and expected it to fail.

I’ve been skeptical of it because that. I really don’t like Lady of the Lake (Phillip Marlowe movie that’s all 1st person). But I do want to give this a shot.
