I didn’t care for John Wick so not sure why I bothered with JW2 but still don’t like it. Feels too much like I’m watching a video game. It’s got a lot of shades of movies I do like (John Woo especially) but it’s missing some kind of charm those movie have.
I really liked John Wick for much of what you're describing- felt fresh enough that I found it all interesting. I couldn't get through part 2.
Watched all and enjoyed them for what they are. Kick bleep, live through situations that no one should live through fun.
If you go in expecting something other than :popcorn:fun, then don't bother. Just enjoy the ride.
Two was the worst one
Out of the 4 I agree. Really hated the ending.
It did lead to a pretty good 3.

4 might have been one the best, "End of a series" of all time.
Really enjoyed from start to finish.

Yeah... I wasn't expecting Kurosawa for part 2 after already having seen part 1.

I went into 2 expecting more of the same. I just really didn't care enough about more of the same but not as good to keep watching. So I did enjoy the ride until I didn't, and then enjoyed ending it.

4 went on a bit too long, but it was good. 1,4,3,2

How many times can I watch Keanu shoot someone in the head? It just was too much of the same for me. The “secret” fight between Keanu and Common was pretty good at least.

John Wick 1&2 rule. The opening action scenes of 2 are among my favorites of all time. If course JW should have been dead many times over, but who cares?

Now 3&4 are still fun but are also way too much.

This was what I kept thinking, and then I say "Gun Fu" as a description attached to the series and assumed that is what the 4 movies are. Somebody mentioned it above, and give me something like The Raid: Redemption over John Wick any day. Similar plotless popcorn fun, but way more variety IMO.

I’ll check out the Raid because I’ve also heard good things about those movies but I expected more from JW. I like action movies but there has to be some sense of a story with it or characters I can get into or at least some variety.

Be realistic about your expectations on a story with this one. There really isn't one - it is video game level. Big bad in a big building - many big bads in between.

I tried, and only got about 1/2 way through. I figured it was just me - like Airplane! ;) Just not my type of movie.

Then maybe it’s not for me as well. Those kinds of movies just make me want to play a video game instead.

JW creates a mythos, world within a world, that I genuinely enjoyed in ep1.. that gave the ultra-violence a more interesting framework than something like the Raid movies. My 2c.

I prefer the first Raid because it was just so dirty and sweaty. JW has a unique aesthetic with the hotel and suits and code of honor and all, but Raid is bloody grimy fighting. I prefer that.

Watching early Hitchcock and it’s easy to see why Hollywood and Selznick especially were so eager to get him to Southern California. The way he is able to use the camera and create these incredible practical effects with it was so natural for him. The opening shot of Rebecca makes the movie. Perfect use of technique in service of the story.

Dang Substance was really disappointing for us last night. We have pretty normal tastes and did not get this one at all. Not scary, not smart, just a bad, boring movie from beginning to end. My wife and I were both giving each other the side eye at how stupid the last 20 minutes were - hoping for maybe something interesting but it just cruised to the telegraphed meaningless ending.

Awesome to read - I just randomly bought the bluray to catch up on the Oscar Noms.

I actually have watched a few movies this month. I rewatched Dune Part 1 and then finally got to Dune Part 2 last night to start somewhere on the noms list.

I re-watched two movies this week.

1. The Magnificent Seven (2016). It was just as boring this time as it was last time I saw it. The only character I remotely cared about was that crazy Santa-looking dude and that was mostly because his voice was so odd. The rest (including Washington & Hawke, who I generally like) were ......zzzzzzzz

2. The Cincinatti Kid (1964). This is a strange film. In some ways, it's New Hollywood before that became a thing. In others, it's so stylized you'd think it came out 10 years earlier. Doesn't matter, though, because McQueen and (especially) Edward G Robinson kill it. The supporting cast is loaded with ringers like Rip Torn, Joan Blondell, Karl Malden, et al.... This movie rocks.

Well its obviously a matter of personal taste so you may like Substance as many others have. I don't think much about the Oscar awards anymore but am stunned this movie has nominations for best picture, director and - craziest of all - best screenplay.

That ending though :oldunsure:

The production started with Sam Peckinpah in the director's chair but he got fired shortly after filming began. He wanted to add a nude scene with Sharon Tate and shoot the film in black and white.

The Brutalist, now that’s a movie. The near 4 hours flew by. There’s a lot to talk about with this one but I’m guessing most haven’t seen it yet so I’ll wait. Big thumbs up from me. Did Guy Pierce get an Oscar nom because he deserved one, he was incredible.

215 minutes

Also I would suggest watching The Pianist before it if possible. I watched it on a whim last night and I think it’s actually pretty helpful and informative for the “backstory” and subtext you need for the Adrian Brody character in The Brutalist.

Turbo Kid (Prime): 2015 Canadian movie set in 1997 in an alternate timeline where there was a nuclear apocalypse in the 80s. IMDB rating 6.7. Jeremy Irons is the only major actor here. It’s Mad Max on BMX bikes (Mad BMax?) with Evil Dead gore - people are high-pressure blood sacks waiting to explode. The plot is pretty minimal, as it should be. It’s funny to me to see Laurence Leboeuf from Shoresy as the bubbly sidekick here. This is a cheesy over the top movie. It must work for most people based on its rating, but it didn’t quite cross the line from bad to intentionally bad for me. Worth a watch if you’re in the right mood, but barely.

I'm in the middle of watching Vertigo and the way the camera goes through the restaurant for the first time Jimmy Stewart sees the wife was so well done.

Yep and that kind of move is something I’ve noticed in even some of his earliest work. Really smooth stuff, crazy he never won a Best Director Oscar.

Still thinking about The Brutalist, I will have to see that again soon. I am still behind on my watching, but probaby the best movie of 2024 for me so far. It blows my mind it was made on a $10 million budget. It looks and feels like a $100 million movie.

Saw a cool little 'chase' movie called '71 - During a riot in Belfast, British soldiers make a hasty evacuation and accidentally leave one of their guys behind. The soldier has to navigate through unknown territory while he has a bunch of IRA dudes trying to put several bullets into him. Pretty tense little movie, and the pace only slows down enough to let you catch your breath.

Probably more gripping if you know what times were like in Ireland back in the early 70's, but it works even if you don't. A little gem of a movie.

I used to watch repeats of My Three Sons as a kid and liked Fred MacMurray in it along with his Disney movies. Maybe that's why I had a bit of a hard time buying his character in Double Indemnity. Not that he was bad but I feel like the role needed a little bit more cool. That said, it was still a solid movie with good pace and clever dialogue. I try not to analyze a movie too much as I watch, just sit back and enjoy, so I didn't see the twist coming. Edward G was great as usual. Barbara Stanwyck's hair was a bit distracting.

Vertigo was a beautiful movie to watch. Loved the sights of San Francisco and all the cars. I really loved Jimmy Stewart's acting early on but had a little hard time buying him in the third act. I'm not sure if it was the acting or just disbelief in the character's actions. It all seemed like an overreaction to what transpired in such a short time. Kim Novak was excellent as well but I also had a hard time accepting that she would be that in love with him in such a short time to put up with his crap trying to change her. And to be honest, I wasn't even sure if the two roles were the same actress at first. They did a great job of changing her appearance. The very end was a bit too sudden too. And what happened to Midge? They didn't do a good job of finishing up her storyline, imo. And what was up with the weird green effect when Madeline came out of the bathroom to fix her hair to complete the transformation? All that said, I really did enjoy the movie though. I didn't find it slow or boring at all given its length. I put it on par with NxNW. Not sure which I liked more yet.

I think this brings up an interesting thought. I'm watching the classics, so it's hard to judge how good they are compared to other movies of the time since they are all good and I don't have experience yet with the clunkers.

Saw this a while back, very underrated IMO. Especially the ending, wasn't expecting that.

Totally unrelated, different genre, all the things but another underrated movie you probably see regularly on the streamers and wonder if it's any good, The Siege of Jadotville.

Fred M's character is supposed to be a patsy. IMO if he was cooler that would be less plausible.

I've seen Vertigo three times and for the life of me cannot understand what the big deal is about that film. Like you said, it LOOKS cool, but it asks me to suspend disbelief far too far.

Then maybe he could have played it a little more gullible and every man. idk...just seemed off but again, I'm not used to his dramatic acting.

I have this issue with a lot of movies. I don't think I was always this way, but the amount of eye rolling I have to do now watching some movies is getting tiresome.

Fred M's character is supposed to be a patsy. IMO if he was cooler that would be less plausible.

I've seen Vertigo three times and for the life of me cannot understand what the big deal is about that film. Like you said, it LOOKS cool, but it asks me to suspend disbelief far too far.

I have this issue with a lot of movies. I don't think I was always this way, but the amount of eye rolling I have to do now watching some movies is getting tiresome.
You're not wrong, especially with recent movies. As a general rule they seem to have a problem following their own internal logic - if there even is any.

I thought Hostiles (Netflix) was a really good recent western
Surprisenly enough I had never heard of Hostiles. Watched it today on Amazon prime. Wonderful cast. Hershel from the Walking Dead? Nice. For some reason I don't mind my westerns to be slow grind movies. Can't explain it. This was a slow grind but decent. I won't watch it again, but it was decent .

I really enjoyed it.

A Good Person - Wow, check out that cover! Florence Pugh and Morgan Freeman living life and riding bikes...this is the feelgood movie I've been looking for! Nope. It's an Ok movie, but kind of a downer. Death, addiction, relationship problems, attempted rape...not a movie I'd watch again. Freeman is nearly always good, and he really digs into a dramatic role here.

It's not a bad movie, it's just a waste of your time.

Boy Kills World - I should like this a lot more than I do - I just don't know why it didn't connect with me. On paper, there's a lot to like. Classic long-term revenge story, replete with training montages. Everywhere I look there's actors I like. Skarsgard, "Mad Dog" from the Raid movies, Mary from Downton Abbey, Famke, Copley, that one dude with the beard (Brett Gelman)...the talent is there. Lots of quick cut action that was pretty good. Final fight was terrific. Many of my boxes are getting checked...so why don't I love it?

Maybe it's the tone. When you pull back, it's a pretty dark story but it plays everything as a joke. So I never get invested in the action like I should - it's like watching someone play a video game. When I don't care, I get bored - no matter what kind of action is happening. It really was a frustrating watch.

There's enough there that I'm going to watch this again. Maybe I just wasn't in the right frame of mind.

Paul Greengrass' 2002 film Bloody Sunday would make a good double feature. It has the frantic visual urgency of Greengrass' other films like the Bourne sequels and United 93.
