They'll never want to watch movies again if you show them this.

I know it took a while for me to recover.

Edit: Oh, I see there's an extended version with 50 minutes of additional footage. Which, of course, means that there are actually TEN circles of hell.

Never heard of Tree of Life but read the Wikipedia page....looks interesting but might be a bit much for 9 year olds. Great cast.

My wife owns the movie My Girl but thinks it'll scar the boys. It's a fantastic film.

Can't wait to see how Jaws goes!
Jaws is getting re-released in July. Never saw it on the big screen, so hopefully it lands near me :shark:

I checked and I didn't see Jaws at mine. :kicksrock:

What I did see was Spinal Tap 41st anniversary, Brokeback's 20th, Clueless' 30th, and Sunset Blvd's 75th for showings.

Goonies, Midsommar, Vacation
Well let's just give them some meth and plop them in front of Melancholia!
I think the best course of action is just to go through the A24 catalogue one by one with the kids.
As punishment for misdeeds? Good plan.
Education for future movie lovers with great taste! ;)

I realize that studio's output is very much an area of disagreement with us.

Spaceman with Adam Sandler I liked it quite a bit. I was pretty baked though

Watched this over the weekend. I thought it was really weird at first. Then realized - oh it is really weird.

But I quite enjoyed it. Fun, strange movie.
Same, didn't know anything about it and enjoyed it. It seems to be a 'rip off' of Project Hail Mary though, can't wit for that one.

I like Tree of Life by I for sure would not show that to a 10 year old. I don’t think they would get it or like it at all.

@General Malaise - time for me to apologize and maybe eat a little crow. Or at the least clarify a strong stance I had the other week about the quality of movies this decade.

I have been scanning lists, specifically on wiki the list of American releases for each year as I get my list together. My strong reaction about the quality of movies overall was very much from the 00s-2015 or so. Again for context that was when I owned the video store then went to manage Family Videos for 5 years after. I looked at every movie, and tried to watch as many as I could. There were years as I went through I could write 30-50 movies no problem that I saw and liked enough to recommend to people. I hit 2018 and I am writing down 5-6. In that regard I very much understand and echo your frustration about choosing a movie in the theater to watch.

For clarification of why I think there are still a ton of great movies is that what I do still watch a lot of is: kids movies, horror, dark depressing dramas, and foreign movies. IMO each of those listed have had a big boom of great movies in the last 10-15 years, so that is what a lot of my reaction is based on.

Kids: from Rango to Encanto to Moana to Inside Out I have loved sooo many family and kids movies from this era. We honestly don't watch that many movies from the 80s because of this. We have watched the big ones like Back to the Future and Karate Kid, but besides that we watch all movies from this era.

Horror: IMO horror is as good as it has ever been. I also watch a lot of them and there is still plenty of crap but the highs are very high.

Dark dramas: the above comment to Andy was true. A24 has been a source of a lot of my favorite movies over this time. Many are horror, but there is a range of genres that I have loved from there. It became one of the first places I looked for new movies coming out. If you miss the indie movies of the 90s, IMO this is a great place to look for ideas.

Non-American movies: This makes up the last big chunk of movies I love from this era. Again, a lot of horror movies but a ton of others from City of God and Amelie to Parasite and Another Round.

So, the last decade has been ripe for these types of movies but I agree on the over abundance of crap in the theater most times I look.

Also, my strong reaction has a lot to do with the uptick in quality I saw in 2023 as I looked. There are 8-10 dynamite movies in there from several genres. I am sure some of that is still covid carry-over as studios built up their movies to try to get them in theaters when people would actually go see them.

My biggest blindspot is from 2018-2022 (specifically 2018 and 2021). A combination of being when I left the video stores and the covid years has a lot to do with that. When there are movies I see listed from those years I have seen, they are ones that I REALLY loved. We have our introduction to Robert Eggers and Ari Aster for starters. I saw Ford v Ferrari in the theater and that was great. Tartantino puts out a great movie, and a couple personal favorite dramas come out during those years and I have mentioned a couple in here within the last week. Combine that with the post above and that is why I have a strong reaction when people seem to be saying there are no good movies to watch anymore and it's all sequel and known IP garbage.

In the opposite, I have a much higher % of movies I’ve liked from the last 7-8 years than I did from the 2008-2015ish period.
It's almost like we should make a list of movies together!!

The years I had the most written down by far were 2000, 2001 and the stretch from 2007-2014. Each of those years had 30-50 titles that stood out as movies I saw, liked, and would have no trouble recommending to people. I haven't gone down the foreign language lists yet either. I would guess some years that would add quite a few more titles to a list. I forget that '99-'01 was when I was working at the Blockbuster in IA, and the other stretch was the other wave of video store work.

The biggest director blindspot I have is probably Yorgos Lanthimos. I can confidently say I have seen 1 of his movies, but still don't really remember it (The Killing of a Sacred Deer) . A couple of those are on my watch list. There are a few other of my favorite directors that have had recent movies that I just never got around too, so I added those as well. (I forgot Mann directed Ferrari).

I think it would be really cool to go through a genre chronologically to see the evolution. Evolution of Horror podcast made me think about things this way, but I think we've mentioned in here that it would be cool to do this with action movies as well - the jaw dropping when you hit some of those breakthroughs like Bourne and Raid would be cool for someone to experience. Watch those movies out of order and they lose some of their power - Raid can look like discount John Wick instead of Sweaty Proto-Wick.

I like Yorgos a lot, but he’s definitely a bit out there

Sacred Deer was good but didn’t love it

Dogtooth is amazing though and I thought Poor Things should have won best picture.

The Lobster is pretty good too but been awhile since i seen it

I don’t think we’ve seen the Favorite yet (im not a huge fan of English period pieces) and been wanting to check out Kinds of Kindness but haven’t got the wife on board yet

Yeah sorry that one was a joke, I did actually like it though, but there’s definitely a “coming of age” scene with the neighbors dress so that’s why i thought of it

I wish there would be more podcasts with that idea. Evolution of Action or Evolution of Comedy would be good ideas.

That is one of my favorite podcasts. I think they said they were doing "man made monsters" next?

Platoon is better than I remember it being. There are definitely some scenes that I had forgotten that really got to me, like the first village raid where the villager's wife gets killed. I was reminded of a couple things that hold it back for me though. Sheen was brought up in the other thread, but I don't mind him in the movie at all - but his voiceover I don't like. My weak link of the movie is McGinley though - I feel like he is in a different movie. In general before we really get the clear division of factions in the troop, I also thought Elias' crew had the better actors. The scene of Sheen going to the underground and smoking for the first time features a who's who of actors I love. Barnes' crew gets McGinley and Dillon hamming it up. I also don't give Stone enough credit as a director, but many of those battle scenes were great and puts you in the chaos and crap conditions. I didn't change my stance on liking Apocalypse and FMJ more, but I am glad I rewatched this one with the discussions fresh in my head.

That's an excellent - and revealing - question. I had to think more than a minute about it because, after reflecting, you're right; I don't really enjoy dark movies.

I'd have to say the closest answer world be Mulholland Drive or if it qualifies, Black Swan.

Oldboy? The Machinist?

I hadn't thought of Mulholland, but I was specifically going to ask about Aronofsky and The Wrestler or Black Swan.

The other two I love as well and would qualify. I think your other tastes apply here, and along with the darkness there are themes of humanity and redemption in these movies. Others I think of like Von Tier are much more oppressive and draining watches, IMO.

My wife owns the movie My Girl but thinks it'll scar the boys. It's a fantastic film.

Can't wait to see how Jaws goes!
Jaws is getting re-released in July. Never saw it on the big screen, so hopefully it lands near me :shark:

Watched this last night on AMC - it's been a while since I've seen it and my son surprised me with a brand new 65" TV yesterday, so maybe the technology is new to me, but the look for the film is very different from what I remember watching. As if the movie were remastered or enhanced with digitalization? Like, you could really get crisp colors of the bathing suits and the actors almost looked in HD. Is that new or am I getting old and losing my marbles?

Excellent synopsis and glad you gave it a re-watch. I don't mind the voiceover stuff but I can see how that might be distracting. I think Stone was masterful with his filming too and as an 8th grader watching this in the theater with a buddy's dad who served in the Vietnam War, I'll never forget his reaction leaving the movie. He said that's as close to what it was like as anything he's ever seen. Yeah....that stuck with me because that movie didn't shy away from the violence, the heart break, the chaos, the terror or the evil of man.

Jaws went through an extensive restoration when it was prepared for 4k.

Hey man, you've given me a TON of movie ideas for summer so a dad can bond with his kids, you're the bees knees in my book or animated feature length film. ;)

Keep the hits coming! You and the other movie buffs are my north stars for films.

My Girl
The Sandlot

Watched this last night on AMC - it's been a while since I've seen it and my son surprised me with a brand new 65" TV yesterday, so maybe the technology is new to me, but the look for the film is very different from what I remember watching. As if the movie were remastered or enhanced with digitalization? Like, you could really get crisp colors of the bathing suits and the actors almost looked in HD. Is that new or am I getting old and losing my marbles?
Jaws went through an extensive restoration when it was prepared for 4k.

That explains it. Thanks!

I kind of prefer the eeriness of the low def version. :bag:

That’s funny some people prefer some movies in lower quality because it reminds them of what the old VHS tape they had looked like. Most older movies are getting restored now which generally is getting it to look closer to what it would have looked like when filmed. Film obviously being physically degraded over time so using the original negatives they can scan it at 4K. Because it’s film and not digital, it’s actually an unlimited number of pixels to be made. Jaws could got 8K or 16K someday and continue to look “better”. The tough part imo in switching mediums is retaining the look and feel of film in a digital presentation. You want to keep some of that grain.

Loss of grain causes the movie collector crowd to lose ALL of their ****. They're ready to hang James Cameron for how Aliens and True Lies look. It's all they can talk about at Blu-Ray.com.

Yeah there’s been a lot of criticism from fans for some restorations that directors were in charge of. People didn’t like the color grading Michael Mann and Wong Kar Wai did to the restorations of some of their movies. The directors are saying the new tech is allowing them to make the movie look how they wanted it to look at the time but I also get the idea of millions of fans having experienced something a certain way and not wanting to see it changed. Who does the art really belong to? Is it ever really finished?

Hold up, have a new entry to the mix, Vanishing Point. Tell me somebody has seen this obviously underrated classic!
I've always meant to since its dialog is used in GNR's song Breakdown.
It's on Netflix according to my AI assistant

ETA - this is why you can’t trust AI, not on Netflix or Prime but is on the ROKU Channel
Totally disappointed last night, fired up ROKU and the only thing they have is the ****ing trailer. I'm guessing this is going to be a Youtube watch because it's not on any of the major streamers I can find :kicksrock:

I'm not sure what category we're talking about now but if Vanishing Point was good to you I'd imagine The Sugarland Express would be too. I just want that last week for the first time and am wondering why I waited so long - it's great.
