I've been watching about a movie per night the last few weeks, and a whole lot of garbage.
Stalker (1979)
The Thicket
Waiting (still good). Did you know they made a Still Waiting?

Couple of others, but anyway, last night, finally hit a winner on Prime. Heads of State. Yeah, it's a John Cena movie. But it has the perfect amount of ridiculousness, humor, action to make it hit the sweet spot. And Jack Quaid really steals the show in his scene. if you see the trailer, you know exactly what you're getting yourself into. It's great.

eta I forgot I also watched and enjoyed The Promised Land with Mads Mickkelson. He's pretty great in everything and did not disappoint in this one. Solid.

I watched Species (1998) in tribute to Michael Madsen (RIP). An alien who takes on human form has been done before and done better but the movie delivers some thrills, humor and titillation up until a weak final battle where the lack of budget shows.

Madsen's character is the action man in a team of scientists pursuing the alien. He gets off some good lines and holds his own with a couple of Oscar winners: Ben Kingsley as a poor man's Professor X and Forest Whitaker as an empath who can somehow sense the emotions of an alien on videotape. Madsen also has good chemistry with Marg Helgenberger who plays a slight variation on her character on CSI. Natasha Henstridge shows a lot of alien skin. I liked it enough to consider Species II tomorrow night.

I was scrolling on Tubi and saw Chef in the leaving soon section so I'll check it out.
thought it was very enjoyable. If I had to nitpick it might be that I felt a more open ended ending would have fit better. Was so weird seeing a movie that "stars" RDJ and Scar-JO but they were barely in it. Humor didn't always land for me though.

Has anyone seen a movie with Dbox? I'm thinking about going to see F1 with it. Is it worth the extra money?

Just got back from this.

F1 is formulaic, predictable, and a little cheesy. It's also SUPER fun and pretty awesome. It's just a really good, fun summer blockbuster.

Also, the dbox was fine. Basically the chair would move a little and vibrate during the racing scenes. For a movie like this - it was added entertainment. But not particularly necessary.

I mean, yeah it's decent. The action scenes are pretty good and the odd couple shtick is decent enough. Agree with you on the Jack Quaid bit.

I watched this last night. I really enjoyed it. I think Cena is a great comedic actor. He's really funny. And Elba is obviously a great actor - though not necessarily a funny one.

Guru wrote that you know exactly what you're getting with this movie. I would say yes - but a good version of that action/buddy comedy. Fun movie.

On this edition of BP watches bad movies so you don't have to (or why he makes bad choices)....

I still like Topher Grace. So I watched Take Me Home Tonight. I knew it had bombed so I knew it (likely) wasn't very good and the reviews on RT are dreadful but the ones on IMDB (which I trust more) are a little more upbeat...several 7's for a composite score of 6.3 It wasn't very good but not really that bad, just kinda meh. I thought the first 4oish minutes were ok but it starts to lull. I did like the interaction between the father and son though.

Watched the Accountant 2 last night. Awesome movie. Kind of like Rain Man on steroids with guns. I haven’t seen the first one yet. Ben Afleck was superb. The guy playing his brother (Shane from walking dead) is just OK. Never been a fan of his, but probably liked him in this more than other stuff he’s done.
Watched the first accountant last night. I must say I love both of these movies. The concept of his autism with being a bad *** is appealing. I could take or leave Shane from The Walking Dead.

bernthal is 10x better than afflek  funny you don’t find him better in fury or as the punisher

Just not a fan of his. He has the same mannerisms in everything he does that doesn’t appeal to me.

The family and I went on the 4th to see Jurassic whatever. Meh. Just more of the same.
Story is weak. Not enough dinosaurs and Scarlett just seemed so miscast. Like they realized they needed a star....any star and paid her whatever it took.

I haven't liked anything in that series except for the first JP which is maybe the best summer blockbuster of all time.

I have seen them all besides the newest one, and you make better life choices than I do. ;)

Oh don’t worry I’ll see the new one too. My wife loves her anything Jurassic Park/World.

I also totally misread that as you hadn't SEEN any besides the OG. :bag:

Last week's single word theme resulted in some good movies and Twisters. Holy **** was that bad. @krista4 - I also watched Presence and have thoughts, but I am still trying to formulate them into a more coherent opinion.

This week's theme is: time.

Have you seen Predestination?
Yes.

It definitely would fit the theme, and movies I saw once or not at all research pile. It was a movie I remember really disliking, but I honestly don't remember why.

 They really do get terrible. I used to complain about reboots/remakes a bit, but IMO legacy sequels are worse.

Primer (I'm sure you've seen)
Looper (if you can get over the uncanny valley effect)
Live, Die, Repeat
Source Code
The Jacket
Triangle
About Time
Mirage
Arrival
The Fountain
Run Lola, Run
Enemy

I can't recommend Timecrimes, Synchronic, The Endless, or Stalker - did not enjoy.

Sinners on HBO
cool opening with Michael B Jordan sharing a cigarette with himself. Enjoyed the story, dialogue, music.
Weird things happening in Jim Crow south.
Enjoyed this one. Had the From Dusk Till Dawn feel just updated. Enjoyed the music, like Michael B. Jordan as an actor and thought he did a great job playing the role(s). Solid watch :thumbup:

Also watched The Thicket. What an odd cast of characters for a Western. Peter Dinklage as a lead, James Hetfield as bit player, Andrew Schulz as a pimp and the one that fell the flattest was Juliette Lewis playing a woman sounding like a man looking like a transgender from the 1800's? I don't know how to describe it, you just have to see it. Odd western but not a terrible watch.

The Old Guard 2 - was really looking forward to this one. It was good but it hit a little flat compared to the original. In the end it just sets up for a third and hopefully, final installment. The plot was solid to start but it tailed off at the end. One of those sequels seemed like everybody was doing for the paycheck.

Seen all of those except Mirage. Never heard of that one.

I have several on my 21st century research list that could fit the theme. These are just a fun way to narrow my list down for ideas to watch. I started last night with a time/single word movies crossover and went with Mr. Nolan and Tenet.

Lol. I've had the 4k sitting on my shelf for a couple years, and i have been trying to actually watch some of these.

Not a fan of the movie or of Nolan in general?

My summer/pool reading has gone from horror in june to books that were made into movies. I grabbed some random books at a used book sale, and first up is Last Picture Show. Also a 4k purchase i haven't watched yet.

Back when I had cable I'd watch a lot of the same movies over and over but now that I'm a streamer I like to watch things that I didn't have access to before BUT...

I wanted to watch ID4 for July 4th (was only 2 days off) still think it's a good movie.

I generally like Nolan but thought Tenet was just terrible.

I had a very Roger Ebert reaction of "To the degree that I do understand, I don't care."

I know it isn't saying much, but we enjoyed ten fold over the last two. I thought the storyline was at least interesting, thought there were some quite intense scenes, and like Scarlett's role.
I'd recommend it as a summer :popcorn:flick.

Always enjoy re-watching looper.
Live, die, repeat is a blast. They really screwed up with the name and advertising as I wish I had seen it in the theater. :kicksrock:

Another great one. That was one of my favorites that year. I knew nothing about it, but think Samberg is funny often enough to click on it.

Beyond the Infinite Two Minutes is the "time" movie I would recommend from the last few years that really surprised me that hasn't been mentioned yet. I loved that one and River by the same people.

It also doesn't have to be time travel. I purposely left it at "time" for anything else interesting that might pop up. For example, 25th Hour or Boyhood could qualify.

I wondered about this. Started putting together some suggestions but then wasn't sure what "time" meant in this context.

Now that i think of it, Presence would also qualify.
How about one of those one-take films like Rope or 1917

You'd just have to google. I'm not sure what you were looking for-movies that are good and you'd rewatch or movies/tv shows that you haven't seen yet.

Not one take but kinetic try Run Lola Run.
