The Boogie Nights talk in the other thread gave me a movie theme for the week since my wife is out of town for work: movies she would probably hate me watching as I go to bed (she really dislikes Boogie Nights). In my research queue I have: The Lighthouse, The Revenant, Midsommar, Drive, Saltburn, Oldboy, and The Wolf of Wall Street. I might need to watch a couple of these this week.

Major score with Marcus mystery movie tonight -Jurassic World Rebirth.

summer blockbuster fare - better than the Chris Pratt run. It’s going to have a tough box office sandwiched by F1 and Superman but may do well in long run.

If these, one sticks out to me as tiers below the others. I really didn't like Saltburn- found it indulgent and silly.

Andy comes out swinging! Another thing we agree on. I have grown to appreciate Fury Road after watching some behind the scenes footage, but I also think it's all a bit silly. But hey, I love Deathgasm and other dumb horror movies, so I can't talk too much. They just don't click with me.

Fuiosa: A Mad Max Saga

I lasted about 30 minutes. I'm just going to shoot it straight - I think the whole Mad Max universe is stupid.

If you are into style over substance...okay. I can see why it might be your thing. But there is nothing here for me in these movies.
I don't get the hype for this one either. I thought it was silly.

Keep with the one word title motif, watched Plane last night. I am usually a fan of Gerard Butler but this one kinda fell flat. One thing I will give them credit for, they embraced his Scottish heritage and made him from Scotland so he didn't have to try to hide his accent. The action was predictable, the plot was stupid and it really didn't appear to have a reason to be made other than Butler cashing a check. I watched it so you don't have to.
I just thought of this, the only redeeming feature of this film is the proper use of a Barrett 50 cal during one of the shootouts.

I am hesitant on that one. I did 2nd movies last night with Lighthouse and Midsommar. I watched Wolf this morning, and think I'll do a Leo/animal day and watch The Revenant tonight. That leaves a hammer violence pairing of Oldboy and Drive.

Did me a search in this here thread and came up empty... doesn't mean none of you have seen/enjoyed the Kraven the Hunter flick. Watched it on my flight out to Texas last week and it did what it was supposed to... fill up about 2 hours of my "sittin' around time" with fairly mindless entertainment. Set up well for a second one, and hey, why not?

Solid 7.5/10 ... won't watch again, but would consider watching a sequel.
I don't believe you.
It won't win any awards, but it served its purpose.

Watched this on the trip home as referenced earlier w/ Kraven. Plane was definitely pretty dumb but like Kraven, it served its purpose to fill 2 hours of sitting in an airplane. Of course, about 10 minutes into the movie I thought to myself "maybe this wasn't the movie to watch while on a plane!"

Maybe swap out Drive for The Audition. Kiri kiri kiri

We enjoyed Deep Cover (2025) on Amazon. The combination of action and comedy worked better in the first hour than in its convoluted conclusion. Orlando Bloom's over-the-top portrayal of a method actor was funny and Sean Bean is always watchable.

It wasn't as good as Deep Cover (1992) but that's a high bar to clear.

Thats 90s, though. ;)

I need to watch the 2nd 1/2 of The Revenant tonight, and the wife is home for a night. How much more animal violence in the last hour +?

Feels like I could watch The Wolf of Wall Street once a week for the rest of my life and still enjoy it.

Watch Drive sometime and pretend Gosling is just shy. It works.

Also, that end was awful. Gosling's a bad ***, but 64 year old Albert Brooks bests him in a fight?

Under Siege is a gold-plated classic.

Understanding what a jerk Seagal is in real life makes appreciation of his "acting" even more sublime. Famously, Seagal refused to lose any fight in his movies. Ever. Watching him act, it's clear he equates bravado and absurdly blind confidence with strength. Seagal is a weak man. Oh sure, he could kick my *** if he was 92, but that's not a brag. Seagal had muscles once, but even then, his narcissism and obvious fear is a mask he cannot remove. Every line delivery sounds like a 13 year old bully that's only slightly larger than his classmates. His words aren't uttered, they are sneered.

I don't know much about most Hollywood stars, and even when stories proliferate about certain actors being jerks, it's not always clear these are objective observations. Sure, there are a few people that are talented and seem so down to earth in interviews, I'd be bummed to find out they suck. Judy Davis is one that comes to mind. So it then follows that with most celebrities, I have no clue what they are like and most often don't care. But with Seagal, it seems clear he's a misogynist and guilty of sexual assault. Thankfully, we have his eternal gift of several remarkably bad performances.

A yes, The Passion of the DiCaprio.

How do you win an Oscar? By suffering and grunting.

You know, there are a large number of popular movies I dislike. And the number seems to grow at an increasing rate the older I get. What that says about me, I'm not sure.

June 20th was the 50th anniversary of the release date of Jaws - the movie that changed everything.

Has anyone noticed that it's really two moves in one? The first half is horror. The second half is essentially a road movie (with an element of good cop/bad cop).

Good description. You could also say the first half is a 70s style gritty cop movie. There’s a killer on the loose. The detective is struggling in his hunt for him personally and with the pushback from the system. The powers that be in town want to block his investigation, down play it and cover things up. We get to know the town and how people are impacted from the mayor down to the locals. The second half is an 80s adventure. 3 guys on a boat with guns and explosives chasing down their treasure, blowing things up.

I get what you are saying, but the direction and acting in this movie was outstanding, for me it was mostly about the direction.

I think I liked it. Haven't really thought about it since seeing it in the theater.

That's interesting, what you said about direction. To me, that element of movie making is either "bad" or transparent.

I don't think I notice when a bad (or at least "not in my enjoyment wheelhouse" ) movie is directed well.

Can't wait for the last week of August when it is re-released.
I was 8 when it was released so seeing it on the big screen is going to be :excited:

Thoughts on the 2 big movie announcements the other day?

1. Denis Villeneuve will be making the next Bond movie
2. Aaron Sorkin is writing/directing The Social Network 2

Eh...

DV is great but...Bond feels like an anachronism that has run its course at this point.

The Social Network is still problematic to me. Taken as a work of fiction it's really good. But as it has it's roots in factual events, yet is apparently so UNtruthful , it feels like slander as entertainment.

I can't find the link now, but I read the other day there's a standalone version of The Stand film in the works. I'm as dumb as an oyster, but what the actual hell?

Yeah after endung the last Bond as they did, it seemed like a logical concluding point. If I was in charge of the franchise I would try to do like Mission Impossible used to and bring in a dffierent director for each movie. Tarantino or Edgar Wright to do a 60s/70s call retro version, Mangold and Kasinski could do great action work as well. Heck I wonder what Spielberg could do with it.

Meh x2.

Bond isn't a franchise ive watched anything from, and Social Network minus Fincher doesn't interest me as much.

Drive 4k was on sale for $8, so that is what i started last night. I forget how great the opening is. I might pair it with Collateral instead of Oldboy, though.

I'm a huge 007 fan and will be there opening weekend no matter who the director and star may be. I think Villeneuve and the new production team understand that part of their mission is stewardship of a tentpole franchise so it'll be a Bond movie before its a Villeneuve movie. I didn't love the psychological heaviness of the later Craig movies so I'm curious to see which direction the filmmakers take.

Calling it now, The Social Network 2 will be a commercial flop if it ever makes it to the screen. Release of the first one was perfectly timed with the explosion of Facebook usage around 2010. Fifteen years is a long time and I don't think audiences will be interested in a movie about the subject now.

Not rental, but went and saw Mission Impossible Final Reckoning last night and love d it.
I thought it dull and boring and jumbled. Disappointed as I thought the first half was enjoyable. I think it's time to reboot the series which I think was partially done

F1: The Movie- it's not quite Top Gun Maverick or Ford vs Ferrari but if you liked those movies, I bet you will like this one. See it at the biggest and loudest theater you have. Don't complain to me about this movie if you wait until it comes out on streaming to see it.

Sounds like the perfect basement home cinema movie ;) 🍿
