I watched the Japanese film Shoplifters on Amazon which won the Palm d'Or at Cannes in 2018.. It's directed by Hirokazu Kore-eda whose latest Broker is in art house release now.

Its pacing is very deliberate as it builds audience empathy with a family of outcasts who survive by shoplifting. But then things begin to unravel in the last hour. There are some wonderful performances and Kore-eda's framing is masterful.

After enjoying Bound, I went with another 90s crime thriller from a director who would go on to bigger things: Shallow Grave. For a low budget first film, Danny Boyle did a great job. It’s an entertaining movie but felt a bit like you had to be there (UK in the 90s) to fully get the impact of this one. I very much preferred Bound. They make a great double feature though.

I need to dig even deeper on his movies. I recently watched Shoplifters and thought it was great. I've sung the praises for After Life - one of my favorite movies I watched last year. I also watched Still Walking and After the Storm as well. There hasn't been a bad watch yet.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance - Watched this over the weekend. Its really good. John Wayne and Jimmy Stewart each doing their individual thing blends really well. Their roles are perfect for their acting skills. Really enjoyed it.

This one was a bit of a disappointment for me. It was good but not the classic that I was expecting.
The payoff is very good and the Wayne and Marvin characters are, too.
But Stewart's character becomes pretty mundane and boring through way too much of the middle third of the film.
For me, it just doesn't rank with the old classic westerns like The Searchers, The Magnificent 7, True Grit or High Noon.

Watched On The Rocks with Rashida Jones, Bill Murray, and Marlon Wayans on AppleTV. Love Bill Murray, and he doesn't disappoint. Fun dramedy.

Thought Christian Bell was very good, and the actor that played Edgar Allan Poe did an excellent job.
Will probably do a rewatch to see if I can catch clues.

The Seven-Ups - Watched this tonight. It was a good 70s, gritty cop story. With a little cop porn thrown in. Reminded me a lot of Bullitt and The French Connection and the Dirty Harry movies. Especially with an epic car chase. It was not surprising, therefore, that when I looked it up, I saw it was directed by the same guy who did Bullitt and the French Connection. Definitely worth watching.

Philip D'Antoni produced Bullitt and The French Connection but The Seven-Ups was the only film he ever directed. The car chase is great and I loved the gritty 70s urban decay but the movie doesn't snap like Friedkin's French Connection.

Holy crap this was a great movie. It's sort of a 50's era Glengarry Glen Ross.

A screenplay by Rod Serling shows the cutthroat happenings of New York big business and its effects on a mostly decent new executive.

Great performances abound. And as one who has always had a great aversion to Corporate America, this one really hit me.

I’m expecting it to win the Oscar for film editing, and I’ll be as pissed as I was when Bohemian Rhapsody won. Like film editing should be awarded based on number of cuts.

I think Elvis is well edited. One may not like the style because it’s a whole lot but at least it’s well edited and well made. Bohemian was not a good movie imo and objectively was a poorly edited movie. I do not understand that win at all.

I have to agree. I reluctantly watched in the last 2 years. I felt like zombies were done, nothing more to be done or say with the but Train to Busan sure did reel me in.

Even straightforward dialog scenes were filmed in ways that made the characters seem less significant. It was technically brilliant though.

I'm late to the party on Everything Everywhere All At Once but I finally watched it before it goes off Showtime on the 14th. I probably lost something by not seeing it in the theater. Watching movies at home always removes a bit of the immersiveness which I think EEAAO needed more than most films.

Enjoyed the movie but it didn't quite match the hype for me. 10/10 for originality but once the multiverse layer was revealed, I thought the story lost momentum and the film hung around for about 20 minutes too long.

Michelle Yeoh is fantastic, but my brain can't even handle that trailer. Too much.

We watched Night of the Hunter the other night. I kept seeing it on lists of classic horror movies for some reason. It doesn't fit the bill and was really slow at points but it was ok. Robert Mitchum obviously makes the movie. The little boy was a really good actor for his age and the time. I looked him up and he only did a few more movies after that. I was expecting to see that he was someone I was familiar with.

Not really a horror movie, more like suspense. The Bad Seed is much closer to a horror movie than Night of the Hunter.

• Thin Man - I know this has been talked about previously in this thread. It was quite enjoyable. The couple had a great repartee. It makes me wonder why they haven't done a modern version. According to wiki, Johnny Depp was signed on to one in 2011. But it was shelved. Seems like a great idea for a modern take.

Love that one. As far as I'm concerned, studios should make most of the Dashiell Hammett novels into movies. They're great source material.
