But yes, as a dad with a daughter, please give me some suggestions. I would very much appreciate it.

Clueless, Mean Girls, Akeelah and the Bee, She's All That

Not classics but all watchable

ETA: i just picked up the dog from @ditkaburgers. She rattled off a list of like 20 movies. We'll see if she follows through and texts them to me.
Yeah Mean Girls and Clueless are high on my list but she is also soooo not that type of girl. She's 85% should have been a gen x grunge kid, 15% princess. I could see her liking those movies but also just hating all the characters deeply. I struggle to predict where she falls on anything.
Legally Blonde
Freedom Writers
Say Anything
Pump up the Volume
Bad News Bears (original)
Freaks and Geeks (not a movie...)

Thanks for the suggestions. She has seen Lost Boys and liked it. Fast Times and Dazed are now on my list too with school starting up.

Also 10 Things, Mean Girls and Easy A
I've seen both of these so many times that I have them committed to memory. I can just about close my eyes and just let them play in my mind.

These movies are so firmly ensconced in the time periods they represent, I'm not sure that a young person today would be able to relate. That goes double for Dazed, which doesn't even really have a conventional plot. It would be interesting to hear her take on these.

Dazed was a 90s movie about the 70s so do you think about the 90s or 70s? :P lol jk

It's likely because Scott had to cut a lot out for the theatrical release. Nowadays, many people don't want to sit in a theater and watch a movie, especially a historical movie, for more than 90 minutes.

The theatrical release was 2 hr 38 min. There's now a director's cut streaming on Apple TV that's 48 minutes longer.

I'm passing on the new version unless they've been able to digitally recast a different lead actor.

He seemed like pretty soon after filming started, he decided to not dgaf. One of the most disinterested portrayals I've ever seen... And I usually like wahkeem

At times his performance reminded me of **** Shawn playing Lorenzo St. DuBois playing Hitler in The Producers

She’s big on this idea she doesn’t belong in this time and wishes she was born much earlier. She isn’t big on her phone or using social media or anything. For the first 9 months or so of knowing her, I never once even saw her phone. I knew she had one because we would talk or text sometimes but never ever saw it. So I think there’s a good chance she will like the throwback nature of those movies.

Was going to take her to see Coraline in 3D as she mentioned she really liked it. Timing ended up not quite working out and she told me to just pick any movie at the theater. The one that lined up best with our missed screening was a 1 day IMAX showing of Everything Everywhere All at Once. I warned her how weird it was and she said she just wanted to see a movie with me and didn’t care. She didn’t give much reaction and didn’t ever laugh so I don’t think she really liked it or even got it. She said it was trippy and she thinks the mom was just on drugs. Pretty sure she fell asleep a few times too (don’t know how that was so loud and hyper paced). But she was in a bad mood before the movie and a good mood after so must not have been too bad.

No I don’t have any blue oyster cult

Yeah that movie sucked so I can totally see her not liking it

I didn't see the part in one of your posts before about her liking animated/kids stuff. I wonder how a Miyazaki movie would go over with her or a similar type of anime.

Funny I posted about that maybe a week or 2 ago. I watched My Neighbor Totoro and didn’t get it. Do you have a suggestion for a better one to start with?

Animated stuff? Iron Giant and Paranorman are at the top of that list.

She'd also probably like the new Jumanjis and Paddingtons. I'd also throw out Bolt, Big Hero 6, Kubo & The Two Strings and Sinbad.

We watched Back To The Future for the x-hundredth time again tonight. That movie will never not be fun to watch.

Edit: It's kitschy but I love the Neverending Story.

Not really, lol. More just spit balling for something different. For a couple weeks I toyed with the idea of doing Miyazaki for DotM next month and thought a book on him might help me understand the movies a bit more. I've liked watching a few I have seen, but it's mostly just because I think the animation is beautiful, but I do feel I am missing something as well. I liked Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke more than Tortoro.

If we are just talking animated, I also have The Iron Giant way up the list. Other popular animated movies at the KP household are: Rango, Big Hero 6, Encanto, Meet the Robinsons, Monsters Inc, Moana, How to Train Your Dragon, The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs, Soul, and Inside Out.

Iron giant is awesome.

Whatever you do, don't let her see Whale Rider.

Watched the Costner Horizon movie and enjoyed it. Excellent cinematography, good production values and attention to period detail. Decent plot and action scenes. Will definitely watch the next chapter.
Nice I got to see this.

I liked Horizon but it's more like three episodes of a ten part streaming series than a standalone movie. There are a lot of characters to introduce and their separate story lines barely intersect in part one. Costner's character doesn't appear until the one hour mark and only gets 30-45 minutes of screen time.

I would have liked to have seen one of the story lines come to some kind of resolution at the end of the movie but instead we just get a trailer for the remaining parts. If I had paid to see this in the theater, I would have been very disappointed. That said, I hope Costner gets the funding to complete his cycle because part one is a solid, modern (non-revisionist) Western.

I heard the same. That it just seems like it should have been a Paramount series. I wonder why he insisted on this being a movie.

Costner's magnum opus has been in development long before streaming was a thing.

Chapter 2 is premiering at the Venice film festival next week although release plans are up in the air since the first one bombed in the theaters.

Just seems like after the success of those Paramount shows, he could have found a streamer to pay him to make this a series instead of him having to basically put up a massive chunk of his personal wealth to make this 3 movies.

Horizon was released via Warner Bros. which is why it's turned up on Max rather than Paramount. I didn't follow all the ins and outs of the production but apparently WBD didn't put up any money and just served as the distributor. After the poor box office for chapter one, they've backed out of a wide theatrical release for chapter two.

What in the holy hell is the matter with you?!

Just came in here to post this and ask for any recommendations: Noir City Chicago It's at my favorite theater so I'm totally stoked. The only ones I've seen are Le Samourai and The Postman Always Rings Twice.

Also figure @Eephus might have good ideas for me? And not sure if @El Floppo likes noir, but he and I seem to love all the same movies, including but not limited to Whale Rider. Not sure if he's mentioned that one to you.

That's awesome. I went to Noir City Detroit awhile back before COVID. I think I am in Seattle for a wedding the weekend of it this year. The line-up for Chicago looks great. Odd Man Out and Brute Force are awesome movies but if I had one I could see there it's for sure This Gun for Hire in 35 mm.

Odd Man Out- a young and extemely handsome James Mason plays an IRA member injured in a robbery gone wrong as he tries to stay alive and avoid the authorities in Belfast. It's directed by Carol Reed of Third Man and you can see shades of that visual style in it. Real good stuff.

Brute Force- classic prison movie where the real evil are the guards and the warden. Burt Lancaster leads a group of prisoners on attempted break out- love this one.

This Gun For Hire- the first and best pairing of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake. Super sexy adaptation of a Graham Greene novel about an assasin who gets paid off in marked bills and goes out for revenge. IMO this is possibly the first real film noir and the prototype from which we get all future hitman movies.

Thank you! I love James Mason. Never seek him out, but when I come across him in a movie I'm always reminded how incredible an actor he was. Think I'll try to see Odd Man Out and This Gun for Hire for sure, then maybe Brute Force if I can do three days in a row.

Google seems to say Costner put up $65 million

I've also seen $20M and $38M figures thrown around. Chapter two is in the can and some filming has been done for part three.

Costner has been kicking this project around for twenty years and seems bound and determined but my skeptical take is that it doesn't get finished. Warners is retrenching under the "leadership" of David Zaslav and there's no telling what comes out the other side of the Paramount takeover by Skydance.

The silver lining if there is one is that Costner has creative control. If this is as far as his project is going to go, maybe he can recut chapter two to bring things to a more satisfying conclusion.

In his defense he's had a David Cameron like career of doing what everyone said he shouldn't and making it work. People thought Field of Dreams was a terrible choice and his agents and others tried to talk him out of it (it's weird, you can't do 2 baseball movies in a row, etc). Dances with Wolves (you aren't a director, westerns are dead, there isn't enough action and violence, why are you trying to make a slow 3 hour movie about Native people) and even though Waterworld got roasted for being an epic overbudget disaster, in the long run it ended up earning a modest profit.

krista: I've only seen the noirs ilov80s mentioned and agree with his recommendations. Odd Man Out in particular does a lot with very little.

I found a good print of Black Tuesday on YouTube and will let you know if I watch it. The 50s are an interesting period in Edward G. Robinson's career because he had to work in low budget pictures because of the blacklist and his age.

Hollywood is a very different place today and while Costner is successful and rich, I don't know if he can put in another $100M to finish the project.

lmao James Cameron obviously but that was a funny brain fart

Sure is. I don’t think he’s going to win this one.

I read the list to OH, and of course he had already seen (and loved) Odd Man Out and This Gun for Hire, but he's willing to see them again. Or I can go alone, which I don't mind at all. He has not seen Brute Force, so we'll do that one for sure.

Watched Silence of the Lambs with the kids (13 and 17)... They watched it with almost no glancing at their phones, which is a win. They definitely liked it- hunkered down at all the good suspense spots.

It places the lotion in the basket.

They'll finally understand why I say that every single time I ask for lotion.

Put the ****in lotion in the basket!!

I had a buddy in college that was freaked out by Buffalo Bill, so sometimes after drinking i would leave him a message on his machine. "it rubs the lotion on it's skin or else it gets the hose again" lol

One of the biggest a-ha moments ever for me was figuring out that Jame Gumb/Ted Lavine played Stottlmeyer in the Monk TV show.

Never seen it, but it has been weird seeing him pop up in Heat, Fast and the Furious, and other things.

Something in the Dirt (Hulu): 2022 movie, IMDB 5.9. This is the 5th Benson and Morehead movie I've seen. It's really odd - I don't know what category to put it in. Two drifting guys experience some supernatural stuff in an apartment, then decide to make a documentary about it. One gets worried as the stuff seems to get more intense, the other seems to be a bit of a wacko.

This was really interesting. I don't know that it has a message, and there was definitely something missing (filmed during Covid, so there was basically no interaction with other people)... but overall I'm glad I watched it. If I had to rank their movies so far, it would be:
1. Spring
---(small gap)---
2. The Endless
3. Resolution
---(decent gap)---
4. Synchronic
5. Something in the Dirt

Huh - I was just looking at IMDB and they did 2 episodes of Archive 81, which I really liked.

Thought it was excellent. Watched it twice already. Hoping it focuses more on Costner and the Sykes family. By far the most interesting of the storylines imo.

Watched FURIOSA over the weekend; and am kind of ashamed that my unbridled enjoyment of FURY ROAD didn't have me going to see this in the theatre opening night.... BUT

I didn't really watch the trailers intently and really had no clue this was as much a prequel for Immorten Joe and The Citadel as it was for Furiosa. Furiosa was a great character in FR in her own regards but my casual attitudes towards researching this movie led me to believe this was just a movie detatched from even the non Max characters of Fury Road. At best I guess I thought it was some sort of Citadel origin story( with a last minute Immorten Joe cameo) rather than seeing the Citadel in its full fury.

Excellent movie...every bit the companion piece to Fury Road and I'm sorry my lackadasical attitude will contribute to them not making MAD MAX: The Wasteland.

On the list of near perfect movies.

So good, they both wanted to follow up with Hannibal the next night.

And both bailed before anything much happened... Which is like 2/3 through the movie. Really, it's just got the fantastic final scene with Ray Liotta and otherwise not much else worthwhile plotwise. I enjoyed Hopkins and Oldman, but hard to sell a movie to a couple teenagers on acting performances.

I much prefer Manhunter, but not sure I'll be able to get them to watch it.
