Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (42 Viewers)

watched London Has Fallen recently... great film-making it ain't, but a fun ride it is. 2nd half felt a little like watching somebody else play COD... in a good way.  also, watched the new keifer sutherland tv show, 24 minus a couple. couldn't help but compare and the tv show, so far, fell way short.

If... (1968)

A Clockwork Orange (1971)

O Lucky Man! (1973)

In a span of 5 years he starred in three classic films then it wasn't until 1979 he made another good one (Time After Time).  After that, nothing worth mentioning, mostly B-movie career.  I would have thought that Time After Time (which he was only 36 in) would have been a turning point in his career for the better since it showed his range as an actor.

he's a terrific but hammy actor. the roles that suit him best are often ones that ask him to dial it down. "Time After Time", for example, is a perfectly fine movie. I heard an interview with him and he said the most "unsung" film of his is "O Lucky Man!".

 
Thinking about seeing 'Don't Think Twice' tonight.  According to my system (7.7 IMDB, 83 Metascore, RT 99% critics/78% audience) it should be a good movie.

Sully also has high ratings but doesn't seem interesting to me.

Haven't seen Tom Hanks in many clunkers.

 
Saw magnificent 7 Today.. what a great film.. loved the cinematography, the musical score, story and most of the acting.. Some VERY funny :lmao: moments and some, to me at least surprises. .. easily one of my favorite movies this year. . Two :thumbup:

I'm no "movie snob" that is for sure .. I go to 5-7 movies a year at the theater and all/most will be what many consider :popcorn: flicks. Just looking for 2 hours of entertainment.

Saying that... It's a reboot of a movie made 56 years ago...  I did see the originally one 30+years ago but heck if I recall most of it.... With so few western's made now days, and this one grabbing my attention from start to finish, it was well worth $$ for my Dad & I.

Go back to kicking the kids off your lawn old man.. ;)

After his last two movies, Jeremy Saulnier is definitely a director that I am just going to watch whatever he puts out (until he proves me wrong).  What he seems to be able to do is no easy task - make movies where ordinary people get themselves into trouble and have to resolve it in a realistic manner.  I loved Blue Ruin a few years ago because it was a great revenge movie, but also because it showed an average Joe trying to do stuff that usually we see the Stathams of the world doing.  It was bloody, messy, and all the more realistic and tense for it.  Same thing goes for this movie.  Here we have a punk band witness something at a show they shouldn't have, and are stuck there and need to get out as the bad guys start circling.  Again, ordinary people have to use whatever they can to get out, and again, it is bloody, messy, and very tense.   This is more of a horror movie than his last one, but I still think people who liked Blue Ruin will probably like this too.  The only thing holding it back a little for me is that it plays like a home invasion horror movie, and that is one of my least favorite types.  Still damn good.  7/10

I really liked Blue Ruin but was somewhat disappointed in Green Room.

Speaking of home invasion movies, I'm not really a fan but they scare the hell out of my wife, Hush was pretty good. The added twist is that the woman alone in the house is deaf.

Saw it and it was very good, not quite great. Starts out very funny but then becomes mostly a serious drama.  Great comedians in it (notably Key from Key and Peele, Britta from Community) and there are a lot of literal LOL moments.  Hard movie to grade but I'll give it a conservative 7.5/10. 

 
Good Night and Good Luck - Great performances, script was a little choppy. B+

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Unique story and Pitt did pretty good. Two scenes stand out...The encounter with the German U-Boat and the sunrises. A-

 
Storks

Adults won't like it but my daughter loved it.  Some unique moments (like the wolves) but geared for kids under 10.  Safe movie to take younger kids to.

Are the wolves different than the dogs in Up? Previews make them  seem identical.

We stopped in on The Magnificent Seven over the weekend.

What I liked most about it, is it's a movie you wouldn't feel uncomfortable bringing your young teen kids to.

It has violence but nothing over the top gratuitous.  It's a fun popcorn movie.  Good guys vs. bad guys. 

I never care for Vincent D'onofrio, but even his character was unique this time around. 

 
The Revenant was a damned beautiful movie. Just gorgeous. that said... I didn't find too much to chew into- there was the theme of the avenging spirit (I think that's what revenant means?), and somewhat about family bonds and honor. Essentially a chase movie drawn out... but always stunning to look at.

I like that we're in a era of "bad guys" not just being black/white and having some understandable motiviations, and the movie did a decent job with that... even though the Ree were myopic with their "find the daughter, kill everybody else" plan. Didn't buy the Walking Dead injury rebounds- although in the "avenging spirit" theme...I guess- alright. Thought the repeated dream sequences were a bit self-indulgent from the director- a chance to get some mystical realism or straight up fantastical crap in there that didn't feel needed narratively or visually, IMO. If I hadn't seen some similar stuff already in Birdman, I might have been more interested. 

Really loved the immersion and portrayal of the US? Canada? New world. speaking of the latter- definitely felt at times like Malick's New World, with lingering shots of clouds, streams, birds in flight... naytcha. and like that film, I liked it a bit, but so far don't think it was resonate long-term.

 
Key Largo - 7/10

Good, not great, classic movie with Bogart, Bacall, and Edward G Robinson starring.

It does further solidify that EGR is one of film's greatest all-time actors. He's completely menacing in this show.

The acting chewed more scenery than the hurricane.

An old business partner went to school with EGR's son and said the old man cited this among his favorites. My pal said that, while he was a lovely, erudite, normal guy who really liked and got along with kids, it was soooo weird to have Johnny Rocco set out a bowl of chips.

 
rented then bought  "Bridge of Spies"

very good.    so interesting that i spent an hour reading about the real life events after the movie just to wrap my head around this story.   Its a great movie

The only part I was a little disappointed in was some of the characters got zero "back story".. The "Mexican", "Bow hunter", Trapper and Knife thrower had some pretty good lines, but very little back story.

Otherwise, as you said, a very good :popcorn: flick, worth the $ ..

I had zero expectations, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Nope. Waaaay behind on my movies. The haul into town to return a redbox is too big a deal and just got innerwebs again and have yet to pick out a netflix/prime/whatever. Lookin fwd to seeing it when i do.

Hey, did your friend ever get her suspense movie made? Crowdfunding came along right after she made that promo and i thought it'd be perfect for that.

 
Saw Serenity for the 1st time this weekend. Really good film. I missed the whole Firefly series too, I have it on my Amazon watch list, hopefully they put it up for free on Prime at some point. The characters were very good, some were a bit shallow and predictable but not eyerollingly so. A couple of plot points were also tropish, but again not distractingly so. I think they could have built up the impact of the big reveal a bit more, but they probably didn't want to run longer. Also, the pseudo-anachronistic western dialect made it hard to understand a few lines, but I felt like it was a nice touch anyway.

I hope Wheedon revisits that universe again before he's done. See this one if you haven't and like sci-fi at all.

I prefer the series over the movie, but I'll take any Firefly I can get.

 
Been watching random stuff. 

OJ: Made in America:

So damn good, but maybe too in depth, if that's possible? I am only through the first of 3 discs and about the first 3 of 7 or so hours, but it is completely captivating.  Love the juxtaposition of  the tension and feelings of race at the time and how people viewed OJ.  Will get to the next disc soon. 

Spring:

Been trying to get to some newer horror movies to get in the spirit for Halloween.  Just browsed around some lists for ideas and this one seemed interesting.  Good premise, and started off fantastically, but I honestly couldn't get 100% into it.  Not sure how to describe it - maybe Before Sunrise meets The Relic? 

Buffy the Vampire Slayer:

Probably my favorite show of all time, and I have been doing a rewatch (again).  It's been probably a decade since I have seen a lot of the episodes, especially the later seasons.  I have only seen a bit of Season 1 of Angel.  Before I started, I stumbled on a couple websites that suggested an order to combine the 2 shows as you watch, as they do intersect a bit, so I will try that.  Just got done with Season 2, and it reminds me every episode (even the ####ty monster of the week episodes have flashes of goodness) why I love the show.  It's also fun watching with a different outlook on life, as characters you thought you liked suck and vice versa.  Joyce is a #### parent, Xander is kind of a doosh, and Cordelia is actually pretty decent under the snark.  I remember Season 3 being my favorite, so we will see if that holds up.

I am probably in a tiny minority, but I was  :shrug: with regards to Firefly. Maybe because my friends hyped it so much that when I finally saw it, it just wasn't that exciting to me.

Anybody else get a real Blazing Saddles vibe? Many shot compared. like Denzel riding into town, or the fact they blew up the town. But the real one that had me and my daughter laughing was when all seven were sitting round the table eating. And somebody yelled out "More Beans!"  :lol:

But I agree with On The Rocks, Vincent D'Onofrio was the best character

 
No thread for it so I figured I'll just post my thoughts here but the new trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean came out tonight. Looks good. I'll have to watch the previous ones to catch up. They're always good.

Exactly, me either and I see NO reason to get excited about another one. The very best it could be is a matinee' I don;t regret too much

 
"Deepwater Horizon"

Really good!  A little slow for the first half, but blazing good second half.  The special effects were amazing! 

Good stuff showing the real historical testimony footage of the follow up investigation as the movie ends and a dedication to those who were killed during this incident. 

Scenes with John Malkovich are the best.  I wish he were in more movies.  This movie makes you angry at BP, and makes you feel terrible for the men who were fighting to survive to get off the rig as it was going up in flames.

Good movie.

The first one is great. The second is decent. The third is not good. Problem is that there's no reason to watch the second if you're not going to watch the third.

The fourth is totally non-memorable.

I'll likely skip the fifth. Aren't we all finished with Depp by now?

I was about 15 years ago.  I couldn't even make it through a PotC movie.  Can't remember the last movie of his I liked or I actually liked him in - maybe Donnie Brasco?  (I really like Rango, but don't really count that).

I loved the first PotC... the rest were increasingly disposable and bad. 

I think Tim Burton has destroyed Depp. allowed him to be self-indulgent on screen to a point where he's a complete caricature... and the performing style seems like it overflowed into other performances of his. that said- didn't see Black Mass... IIRC he was supposed to be good there.

I think that is a huge problem.  I think Big Fish was the last of his movies that I liked, and that was a long time ago too.  So tired of his string of slightly creepy kids movies. 

 
That they allowed Mortdecai to be made at all screams volumes about the Hollywood system, IMO.

"Self indulgent" is the perfect descriptor.

I didn't care for the movie Black Mass, but I thought he was great in that.

Before those jobs, I have to go back to Donnie Brasco as well.

I actually saw that one unfortunately. perfect example of the burtonesque self-indulgent performance.

I thought Black Mass was very good.

I also liked The Ninth Gate and Secret Window of his post DB work
