Hell Or High Water

New Jeff Bridges bank robber movie co-starring Chris Pine and Ben Foster. Not special, but I enjoyed it.
Gotta disagree with that one.  The atmosphere was fantastic and I enjoyed the complicated motivations of the characters.  Loved it it and it's still burned in my memory, a sign of a great movie.

Chris Pine was decent. A better actor could have elevated it to special.

i've been remiss in posting my mini-reviews:

The Accountant
Decent crime/thriller. Afflect very strong, Kendrick pretty wasted. Where was she in the third act? Too clever and too long by 20-30%
3.1/5

Girl on a Train
I've not read the book for whatever that's worth. Probably a career role for Blount and the strongest reason to see this (unless you're the guy who hates her for "letting herself go") A little above average in most other aspects.
3.32/5

Deepwater Horizon
I'm a sucker for environmental actioners with a message and they are actually pretty rare. This one is a little over-blown and sappy in the final act, but some great action sequences, able to deftly and interestingly explain what was going on behind the cataclysm, Flawed but fun agenda film.
3.88/5

Magnificent 7
I went in with lowered expectations which were squashed. Expansive, glorious production with larger than life stars, great soundtrack & cinematography, excellent pacing and beautifully orchestrated climax. Nothing new and overly violent, but that was okay by me.
3.95/4

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'll disagree with you on that point as well.  I thought it was his best played serious role.

While on the topic since your first post, I reflected on this film a bit today and will say it was unequivocally the best movie I've seen this year.

Really rich characters.  Great dialogue.  A unique bank robber plot.  The secondary characters were great.  The young waitress, the older foul mouthed waitress lady.  The bank employees, the bank customers.  Jeff Bridges partner was solid.  The relationship between Bridges and his partner, and the relationship between the two brothers.  Everything about was really great.

I was prepared to dislike the movie, and I know the original is beloved. But what can I say? It was entertaining.

Hey, you liked it and that's cool. So did I

Best movies I've seen this year:

The Lobster
Hail, Caesar!
Kubo and the Two Strings
Swiss Army Man
10 Cloverfield Lane
The Nice Guys
The Big Short
Anomalisa
The Hateful Eight
Keanu

A couple made for TV....

Killing Reagan.  Not terrible.  In fact, it was entertaining.  But I'm a sucker for this kind of topic.  The kid they got to play Hinckley was really good.

Killing Lincoln.  This was really, really well done.  The actor playing Lincoln wasn't great, but how they told the story was really good and Tom Hanks as the narrator was really good.

Rocky Horror Picture Show: Let's Do the Time Warp Again  The reimagined story of the cult classic.  I've always been a fan of the supreme ridiculousness of the original and the music is still great.  So, I will fully admit that I was annoyed that they would redo it, and that a woman would be playing Tim Curry's character for the ages.  But she nailed it.  And nailed it well.  This was a very good reimagining of the story.  And Curry as the Criminalist Narrator was massively funny.

The Conversation - 7.5/10

Yeah, Hackman is a really great actor.
I'll always remember that brief scene where Hackman's on the phone (perhaps with his landlord? can't remember).

That's the moment I realized that Hackman could be the best actor alive.

I don't see how you can give it anything less than a 10. It perfectly stays within itself and succeeds.
Weren't nothing but a 10 when it came out because of when it came out. The world didn't know how to feel about losses of freedom and individuality to the faceless entities who would surveil in the Watergate aftermath. This piece brought it home with a thud. Saw it recently and it feels small & squirrely, which works for me but may not in newer, larger contexts.

I agree that it is very much a product of its time. Not so much for what it taps into (Watergate, gov't surveillance, whatever etc) but instead the characters (and the storytelling for the characters). It's a small, intimate movie about Hackman's character. To me, it has more in common with a Cassavetes film than "Parallax View".

I think it breaks it's its internal consistency a little. Why would introverted  and guarded Harry invite a group of people to a party at his workshop?  The stealing of the tapes felt like a forced element.

I still like the scene in Uncommon Valor where he learns the fate of his son. Awesome actor!

He makes a lot of bad movies better with his presence ("The Package" is a great example).

Yep. He's like Gary Oldman or Willem Dafoe. They automatically make a bad movie better.

Another example of this is the terrible Sylvester Stallone / Sharon Stone movie The Specialist. It's not good. I mean, Rod Steiger is playing a Hispanic mob boss! But James Woods is so hilarious and over the top, the movie is totally worth seeing for Woods alone.

Star Trek Beyond

The movie was fun. Parts were stupid, but overall I enjoyed it. One particular scene featuring a Beastie Boys song was equal parts ridiculous and brilliant.

The wife and I subscribed to Amazon Prime this week because we wanted to watch the new Woody Allen series.

I've been watching several Prime original shows, including:

Goliath
Fun Billy Bob Thornton legal thriller.

Catastrophe
Decent comedy that wouldn't have much if you removed the bathroom humor and sex jokes. Also, the lead actor playing the romantic heterosexual male in this series seems super gay, so that's a little confusing.

Man in the High Castle
Slogged through 30 minutes of episode one and decided to try it later.

big fan of catastrophe- I think it rides the line between mostly goofy (bathroom humor and sex jokes) with just enough sincerity to make it work well. the ball breaking all around is good stuff.

man in castle... meh. felt like it should have been more of a fun ride... but I guess it's worth getting through it. if only to see what they have in store for S2.

I don't mean to sound like Catastrophe isn't good. It's black humor, and I sure do appreciate that.

gotcha.

btw- the actual man in the high castle may or may not actually be borat.

i don't know that the show is built to last really but whatever. I think the male lead - Rob? - is fairly recognizable to me as type of dude from the midwest.

Give Man in the High Castle some more time.  It's not a super fast moving show, but the premise is really cool and I think most of the characters are really well done.  I'm super looking forward to Season 2.

Yeah, I've heard a lot of good things - so there's incentive to stick with it.

Pauly Shore Stands Alone

This is currently streaming on Showtime.  I signed up for the 30 day free trial, and this is the first program I watched.  (strange I know)

I remember when he was making his bad movies in the 90's.  This documentary is overall nothing like his celebrity persona, but there is some of that mixed in.  For me, it was an interesting program.  He has a really unique relationship with his fans and those that he comes in contact with through the filming of this short tour through Wisconsin and Minnesota in the middle of winter 2014.

Having watched this, has led me to listen to the WTF episode (Marc Maron) with Pauly Shore.

If you follow the standup comedy industry, this is worth a watch.

Two more really good documentaries currently on the Showtime streaming app.

WEINER - the behind scenes look at Anthony Weiner's 2013 run for Mayor of NYC.  This doc. is like watching a pending train wreck that you just can't bring yourself to close your eyes from seeing what happens next.

This guy, along with most people like him running for a high profile public office could give anyone a run for their money as the biggest narcissist ever.

There is a scene where he is in his home re-watching a television interview he did the night before where he was skewered and he's watching it with a smile on his face like it was a performance he was proud of, and Huma is standing next to him, leaning against the wall with a look of disbelief on her face wondering why he would laugh at such a disaster that he was the main character in.  The production and pace of this program is really well done.  It never gets boring.

All Things Must Pass - The story of the rise and fall of Tower Records -  I enjoy almost all things historical and most all things music, and since this story was really well done, I loved it..  It brought back so many memories of going into the local record store and flipping through stacks of albums, and trying to decide which one to buy if you only had cash for one.

I don't know. I made it about half way through and threw in the towel. I'll give you the premise is what got me interested along with it being a Phillip **** novel. But my god  the characters were so 1 dimensional. By the end of the 5th episode I was wishing someone would just put a bullet in the female leads head as all she was doing was putting everyone she came across in Peril while searching for the truth. I also couldn't  get over the casting of the wimpy guy for the role of the Marshall.

The good parts were the guy who played the Nazi Obergruppenfuhrer and the interaction and plotting between the Germans and Japanese. Again really they had a good idea that was just not executed well IMHO.

Foster had the meaty role.  Pine was surprisingly great as well.  He toned it down a bit.  Both of them excellent.

Movie will likely be in my top 10 of year.

Only problem was Bridges and his partner.  Partner, dude from The Shield.

I wasn't sure if Bridges' partner liked him.  That is fine if he didn't.  Interesting.  But not sure if that was the intention.  That dynamic also tempered my reaction to the ending.

I needed Bridges and his partner's relationship to be flushed out a bit more.  Was a big part of the movie.  Left me confused.

I think Bridges and his partner loved each other. Even though Bridges insults were usually racist, I think that came from a respect and understanding of each other that was cultivated over years of working together.

My sister in law came over for Halloween. She and my wife were looking for a scary movie to watch on Netflix. I'm a horror fan, but they're not, so I let them pick something that wasn't too intense. They settled on something called "Practical Magic", as soon as I saw Sandra Bullock come up in the opening credits I knew I'd been bamboozled. <_<

Finally saw Spotlight. Tellya, there just aint nothing better than a story where you get to watch people riding the crest of a wave of importance, power, motive, fundamental stuff of life and human capability. My brain tweaks like it does for y'all with Aahnold with a big gun when i see people using the best of themselves to change their corner of the world.

Those were my neighborhoods. I was an altar boy in Jamaica Plain - mentioned a couple times in the film - in the 60s. Even served a communion tour with Richard Cardinal Cushing, one of the 2-3 biggest Catholics America has ever produced. When i moved back to the area, i found myself deeply drawn to and comforted by areas dominated by the big grey spires of Catholic churches. Wasnt molested - my wife always said i was but suppressed it, but that's cuz i dont like fingerblasts - but knew plenty who were, who killed themselves and who are still killing themselves every day because of the Ice Cream Priests. I've written here before about a friend who falls in and out of hell because the molester of his youth is still the most positive relationship of his life and that burns a new corner off his heart every day. The filmmakers used those phallic, overbearing steeples beautifully to frame the horror of being ####ed in the ### by God.

See it, show it, know it.

Captain Fantastic

Solid with some great moments.  Viggo always good.  The kids were superb.  Frank Langella was misused.  Just didn't give him anything to do.  The script needed a few more passes.  Would have preferred if it was just a bit more serious overall.    6/10

Magnificent Seven

This is straight up just a great action flick. If you don't like Westerns don't worry about it.  Plenty to like.  The cast is great.  The crew all given their moments.  D'Onofrio and Byung-Hun Lee steal the show.  Lee is a badass.  The act three battle scene probably the best action scene of the year.    7/10

The Accountant

I was prepared for a trainwreck.  Was pleasantly surprised.  This was as good as any of the Bourne movies besides the classic first.  It's a solid little action flick.  6/10

The Searchers  (1956)

Just had a feeling this was going to be a letdown.  Probably why I never watched it before.  I get why it's a classic.  The visuals.  The nature of Wayne's character.  I enjoyed it but felt it was hokey and dated way too often.  Moreso then I felt with The Treasure of Sierra Madre which came out in 1948.  To think Lawrence of Arabia came out only six years after The Searchers is startling.  Like going from water to first steps on land.

Still the visuals are stunning.  Great genre pic.    8/10

Hacksaw Ridge 7.5/10

Decent WW2 flick about an unbelievable American hero.  Based on the true story of Desmond Doss, one of three CO's to ever to win the Congressional.  I want to read more about his incredible story after watching this movie. Cool part about it was the actual clips of Doss reminiscing at the end.

Also Teresa Palmer (plays Doss' wife Dorothy) is beautiful, need to see more of her.  I read she is nekkid in the movie Restraint

:hifive: I know many hate "re-makes" but in this case, a remake of a 50+ year old movie worked out pretty well.

The Big Short:  Really good.  About a few guys who foretold the housing crash of 2007-2008.   Good story, great acting.  No action as in guns, fists, killings, but suspenseful none the less.  Probably not a chick show, at least the chicks I know.   Damn good movie.

4.2/5

Girl on a Train

I had heard more negative reviews than positive so I wasn't going to see it.  My wife really didn't want to see it, so this weekend she was out of town and the scheduled showing at one particular theater made it an only available option.  I was more than pleasantly surprised.  I really liked this film a lot.

And one particular scene at the end of the movie when a female audience member made a really loud sound like she was about top vomit was above average.

"Trolls"

My 6 year-old son was amused.I think it was aiming for a kind of humor found in The Lego Movie but it was fairly run of the mill. It's such a trifling, threadbare plot that you forget anything about the as you walk to your car.
