Recently viewed movie thread - Rental, Streaming, Theater etc (9 Viewers)

I saw an advanced screening of Fantastic Beast and Where to Find Them.

It's OK I guess. Mostly a kids movie with some scary parts, but overall it felt like a CGI-fest. It took a while for the main story to get going.
I liked Eddie Redmayne in Les Mis and The Theory of Everything, but he felt out of place as the main character here. Kids will love this movie but I can't recommend it for adults. Even fans of the Harry Potter series will find little connection to the Hogwarts world.

Well, yeah.

my problem is that the movie occurs at the exact moment he achieves consciousness and the rest of the world abides. Didn't buy any of it.

 
We saw an absolutely terrible horror movie a month or so ago... the forest?... American girl tries to find her twin in a suicide forest. Cliches galore. Just watched the exact same story, except no twins- Mathew mcconaghe instead and directed by Gus van sant. Sea of Trees, I think. Pretty decent film...nothing earth-shattering or terribly original (we both had it figured out pretty quick), but well told and shown. decent...especially taken along with the disaster of the other one and seeing what is possible instead of junk.

Where to begin?

I've watched tons of Italian giallo horror films, but this could be the most explicit violence you'll see in a movie in awhile. That this is thinly-veiled religious propaganda by director Mel Gibson is not my beef - it's the corny closeups, the terrible dialogue, and SpiderMan is the lead? In a post-Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket world, Hacksaw Ridge is an anachronism. It's a movie that would have seemed normal in 1950. But the preachy God stuff...at least write this better. The actual footage of this hero was the best part. The rest was a messy, disgusting snuff film.

I actually saw a mini-doc on Vice about this forest in Japan.  It's real... people go there to kill themselves.  Haunting, as only real life can be.

 
The Bridge - 7/10

Not great, but not terrible. The kids do a good job showing the naiveté, fanaticism, and ultimately terror of kids forced into a battle they didn't understand. Since I know a lot about WW II and its ending, I guess this one played out exactly how I thought it would so I wasn't terribly impressed. I imagine it played quite differently in 1959, a short 14 years after the events.

And it broke Volker Lechtenbrink - without whom Als der Weihnachtsmann vom Himmel Fiel wouldnt have been half the film - to the moviegoing public.

 
He Got Game.

I watched this first time on Netflix last night. I didn't like it at all. The music was corny, as was the acting. I didn't care about the hooker love story, and Jesus came across more as like a liar and a hypocrite than a conflicted young star. 

 
Revanche - 6/10

Didn't like it. Didn't hate it. Could have lived without seeing it. 

I get the theme, but didn't like the plot resolution at all.

Irina Potapenko though... :eek: :wub:

 
Scraping the bottom of the amazon prime barrel this weekend -

Mi-5 - It was an ok action movie. Seemed more like a BBC-type tv movie. Maybe it was? Anyway, it was fine. I was entertained enough.

Wild Card - This was not good. Jason Statham as a kind of enforcer in Vegas. While there were a couple of fun fight scenes, the rest of the movie is really dumb.

Bone Tomahawk - This was a strange one. It was a pretty good, slightly humorous western for like the first 2/3 of the movie. Then ... it got very weird. It wasn't bad - just strange at the end. Overall, it was pretty good. If you like westerns, you should like this one.

 
Can't remember if I mentioned it here, but my kids (and I) loved the old James Garner film "support your local sheriff."  Good clean fun.  Perfect for 8-12 year old kids, something you can watch with grandma, and you would enjoy too.  If you are looking for a tolerable movie to watch with kids and grandparents during the holidays, and you've had your fill of Elf, Princess Bride, A Christmas Story, Back to the Future, ET and other good/safe/family movies, this is a good one. 

 
Watched Captain America: Civil War again last night.  I continue to be very entertained by the entire universe they have created.

Garner is probably the most reliable actor in Hollywood. He never seemed to make a bad movie.

Is it? That wouldn't totally surprise me because it felt kind of like a tv show. But the story was a self-contained one. If its part of a larger series, its definitely not necessary to know or watch that series to enjoy/follow along with the movie.

very likable actor. and a really good run... big fan of his westerns- "support your local gunfighter!" is great too.

 
Finally watched Blade Runner, Solid A. A couple of questions

Did Roy Batty shut him self off? Because there was nobody left for him? Cause the way I see it, he still had 6months to a year before his 4 years were up.

And was Decker a replicant? No proof, other than Rachel asking if he has administered the test to himself and the way he was acting in his fight with Batty.

It was set in 2019, so some of the replicants are already around

I never thought of the self-shutting off idea... just assumed it was his time. to die. (considering the film is 25 years on and pretty universally seen/discussed, I'm not going to go with spoilers here... sue me). eta: I kinda like your thought though. eta 2: actually... roy's body starts failing him at the end there... so I'm going to stick with it was his time. to die.

the humanity/decker/replicant question is pretty much the crux of the story, IMO. director's cut gives more hints to it than the theatrical release, and also doesn't offer that goofy voice-over at the end. I like to think, given the hints, that he is.

2019?! oh man.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice 7.5/10 -   I waited for the extended cut to be available to rent and was pleasantly surprised.   Really enjoyed it, it could have used a little more WW but heck, what movie couldn't.   Being huge into super hero action figures as a kid (playing with not collecting) I have really liked the Marvel and DC movies with most the major heros in them.   Always a fun ride for me.

 
Hell or High Water 2.75/5 - Pretty interesting story and decent acting but I was ultimately underwhelmed.  Jeff Bridges got on my nerves as the movie went on.  I did love the crazy brother though, he was awesome.

Agreed, I liked it more than I thought I would and when she showed up in the big battle was the best scene in the movie

 
Continuing a new trend toward documentaries from Turner Classics that i'm enjoying immensely, Harlan County USA - America's first great documentary - is showing tonite @ 8:00, followed by Louis Malle's wonderful God's Country and several foreign docs thru the nite. Coffee me, #####!

 
Star Trek - Beyond

I have liked the other modern Star Trek movies and also liked this one. I will say, however, that the computer cgi effects still have a long way to go to look realistic. There were several shots in this movie where I thought it looked like an old Xbox game.

"Blade Runner", for me, is peak sci-fi. It never gets old for me despite having seen it about a hundred times at least. Few films, imo, hold up to that kind of repeated viewing.

 
Reading a little bit about the meaning of white unicorns in dreams, I learned that most interpretations say it represents hope and/or a new and better direction.

This jibes with Deckard's feelings toward Rachel. She's more human than any other human he's come across and makes him love - perhaps for the first time.

I think Gaff placing the origami unicorn is coincidental. It does show that Gaff understands the meaning. I'm not sure if he's taunting Deckard or is hopeful for him.

I say all that to simply reiterate my belief that Deckard is human and the story works best that way. Just my opinion, of course.

I see it simply that you've done a man's job here sir guy knows what deckard is dreaming... which implies replicant. top 3 all-time movie for me, so I'm happy to continue guessing- they're both totally fine possibilities for me.

eta: I'm pretty simple with my preferences- if I have to guess at something being representative of something else... it drops a bit for me.

This is a really good movie from 1955 directed by John Sturges (The Great Escape, The Magnificent Seven).

Imagine "High Noon" directed by Tarantino. The tension is ever present and builds throughout the movie and leads to a surprisingly violent ending.

Spencer Tracy is great and Robert Ryan's villain is a bad dude. Also features Walter Brennan, Earnest Borgnine, and Lee Marvin. 

The Most Dangerous Game (1932)- 7.5/10

 This ended up being a good, tightly packed action film which I didn't expect from a film this age. There are some over the top bits that appear to carry over from some of the cast's stage acting past. But the effects work is fun. A lot of the people involved here also worked on King Kong either during or immediately following the filming of The Most Dangerous Game.

Re-watched Woody Allen's Sleeper last night.It does not hold up very well. Other than the nose at the end and the orb, the slapstick seemed dated. But on the bright side, Diane Keaton never looked hotter  :wub:

 
The Whistleblower - 6.5/10 -  Solid script and acting, it was entertaining.   It was based on a true story which always makes it a little more interesting.

his early comedies like this are pretty broad and less refined. that's not to say they aren't fun or even comedic. it's just something of a leap from "Sleeper" to "Manhattan" for me. Some of that is likely his writing partner at the time (Marshall Brickman) but still.

I normally like Garfield but he was brutal.

Teresa Palmer was a smoke show though.

Garfield's in the new Scorsese movie, so I assume there's a director that can pull a good performance out of Garfield. This wasn't it.

3/10. Pretty awful. It took me 3 attempts to get through this. I did like that it didn't take itself serious, and the second half was better than the first. But man this was dumb. Like Coen Brothers got with Tarantino to make a Marvel movie. I could see where the cheekiness and over the top of it all would appeal to some (more than a few, I know). Especially as serious as most Batman/Marvel movies take themselves. But this just didn't work for me.

I think that was just for PBS. The 1st 2 (McFayden) seasons were very cool. The next 2 were OK. Subsequent years went into that British thing of way too many poorly established story lines and still couldnt keep it fresh.

 
I had a little high hopes for Krampus after a few solid reviews here but it was just ok. It took way too long to get going, the middle was pretty good but it got old fast. My wife hated it but I thought it was fun for a while. Not something I'll watch again. 2.5/5

 
Jungle Book:

Just not my thing, I guess. Liked a couple things, but mostly was bored after about 25mins.  10 year old seemed to feel the same way, as he got pretty fidgety early on, and said the movie was OK.

 
2 movies over Thanksgiving:

The Way: Very spiritual movie with some deep thought and a few laughs. Martin Sheen is wonderful as always, as was Yorick van Wageningen as Joort from Amsterdam. A-

Robot and Frank: - Thought it was going to be a typical mismatch buddy movie. But it took a dark turn that was unexpected. B+

 
Captain America - Civil War

I enjoyed it.  A lot.  I know it's formulaic, but it was probably the best Marvel movie plot that I can remember of all the Marvel movies I've seen.  It was sort of funny that I kept thinking, I've seen this story before when they titled it "The Manchurian Candidate", and then midway through Tony Stark refers to the Winter Soldier as the Manchurian Candidate I was happy it validated my opinion of the story.  The thing I like most about these Marvel flicks is that they are pure popcorn entertainment.  They're not deep.  They're fun.  Good humor.  I particularly liked whoever the kid was that played Spiderman and his dialogue. 

Money Monster

This was my wife's choice.  I sat through it and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it.  Unrealistic, and not award winning, but it held my attention and I like anything that has Lenny Venito.  No matter how small the role. 

Allied

Brat Pitt - WWII flick.  A completely forgettable movie.   When it's re-running on cable night after night in a couple of years, I won't bother to sit through it again.  It's probably a good rental, but yeah....not a very good movie.

One More Time

We had a free weekend of STARZ and ENCORE and this movie was playing.  I only recorded it because I saw that Christopher Walken was in it.  I want to say that I thought this was a great movie, but I don't want anyone else to see it and think it sucked and feel bad that I misled anyone.  It's a movie about an old crooner trying to make a comeback and his daughter who is trying to get a music career off the ground.  Really good characters, really good writing.  I don't know the exact number of music numbers sung in this movie, but let's say that if there are seven, five of them are really bad.  However, I will say this with confidence; Christopher Walken is GREAT in this movie.  I'll watch it again and again just to watch his performance.  And there is a lot of great dialogue in this movie.  Amber Heard is also really good in this.

i saw this a way's back. i kind of forgot the most of it but looked over a synopsis again. Langella goes against his tendency to ham it up in scenes. i remember liking this.
