I had not, watched the Criterion 170 minute extended cut too. LOVED IT.
Just curious - how many Malicks have you seen and which did you like?

I ask because I was thinking about rewatching a few with the new TV, especially Days of Heaven.   Not sure if I've seen The New World since it came out and don't remember much about it at all.

I was just thinking about him recently as a few of his newer ones I haven't gotten to keep popping up on my streaming options - Song to Song, Knight of Cups, and I think another.

I have seen Badlands, Days of Heaven, The Thin Red Line and now The New World. I liked all of them a lot but The New World made the biggest impact on me. It was immediate and held me all the way through.

Some recent watches:

Freaks
I'd long intended to see this classic, but never got around to seeing it. Had the privilege of seeing this on the big screen as a double feature with a lesser movie. Wow. I was blown away. Certainly a controversial movie, I'm sure this gets written off as exploitation. But given the era (1931), I thought the movie was made with respect for the disabled actors. I loved it. Very moving and powerful.

The Whole Nine Yards
Bruce Willis, Matthew Perry, Rosanna Arquette, Michael Clarke Duncan, Amanda Peet, Kevin Pollak, and Harland Williams should have been in a good movie together, but this ain't it. Awful.

Peaky Blinders
Watching this yet again, this time with my 18 year old son. BRILLIANT.

The King of New York
Available for free for another seven days on Tubi. Most of you have seen this one, but this Chris Walken classic is always worth another watch. Great cast, including David Caruso, Laurence Fishburne, Victor Argo, Wesley Snipes, Giancarlo Esposito, Paul Calderon, and Steve Buscemi.

It's fun. But heavy handed and hokey as hell

That nine yards movie....was that the first one or the second? I remember really liking the first one.

I liked the first 9 Yards way back in the day. But if you rewatch today I bet you won't laugh once.

I agree that Peaky is melodramatic, but make it through the entire series and you'll hear some incredible poetry in the writing.

Is this the movie with the "one of us" scene? I know that scene, but haven't seen the movie.

Unfortunately the studio butchered the ending by inserting a weird “happy ending” and removing some of the most disturbing end scenes. The original ending is lost but you can read about it on the wiki page.

Awww that's a bummer.

Promising Young Woman (HBO Max)

This was terrific, maybe my favorite film of the year.  Carey Mulligan was her normal awesome self.  The story was original.  The dialogue was terrific.

Interested to here Krista's thoughts.

Really was great. Bo Burnham and really all the guys in the movie were so well cast.

Saw this pop up on HBO last night.  I need to get to this one in the next couple days.

Loved it.  It was hilarious in a twisted way.  Think I posted about it here; I'll try to find my review.  Mulligan was phenomenal.  I loved Nomadland, but Mulligan was head and shoulders above McDormand for this performance.

Me too!

Watched Promising Young Woman tonight.  Sheeeeesh.  Has anyone discussed this yet?  It's rough.  Overall a superb movie, but rough and not without flaws.  Carey Mulligan deserves every award ever created, and probable some new ones made especially for this, for her performance.

Bump.  I guess I didn't say too much about it.

Loved it too...

The complete gamut of emotions on this one for me....

My Universal Monsters blu ray set has an alternative  score that Phillip Glass wrote for Dracula. Wow did that really save the movie for me. I’ve always found that movie pretty boring but the lack of score really seems to have been the heart of the issue. The score brings it all together.

Which Dracula?

The Tomorrow War

Paramount was seriously planning on releasing this in theaters?

And they were able to offload this to Amazon for $200m.
Streaming has a weird business model for sure.  I can't remember what exactly it was but I remember a recent pod talking about NF giving a director a deal of 300M or so for a couple sequels for movies.

in the end it feels like rewards quantity and # if "exclusive" options for the sites, and not as much for quality.

Well the Prime movies and TV is basically just a giant commercial to get people sign up for Prime and use buy things on Amazon. They aren’t trying to make money as a media company.

@Ilov80s - not sure if you have been listing to that screenplay pod I suggested, but the newest one was with a writer of Brokeback Mountain, and I thought it was really good.   It's a movie that has been on my mind for a rewatch soon.

@KarmaPolice well after your reminder today, I fired up the episode of the Script Apart pod on Speed today. Thanks for the recommendation, I enjoyed the episode a lot. It was a very simple set up but was full of insight. I’ll definitely check out more episodes.

I put off seeing Its A Beautiful Day In The Neighborhood because I 'THOUGHT' I had heard it only had so-so reviews, not the case.  Not only was it better than I imagined for some reason it really hit home for me on many levels.

The opening threw me off since it went into a direction I didn't expect and it had 'one' dream sequence that was odd but the rest was fantastic.

The lead is not Tom Hanks it is Matthew Ryhs, someone I wasn't familiar with and he is great.  I was blown away by his performance.

I highly recommend THIS movie.

Maybe Rian Johnson for the two Knives Out sequels? Think he pocketed 100 mill himself and overall NF is spending 450+mill, which seems quite extravagant for these types of films.  Exclusivity is definitely a huge factor in these deals I think.
