Ever watch NYPD Blue? If not, several of the early seasons are out there. Fantastic, groundbreaking show. I think The Wire owes it a lot.

I was thinking about this topic today, just finished Boardwalk Empire yesterday after a multi week binge. It was outstanding. Great acting, period sets and wardrobes, a glimpse at the early stages of organized crime in NYC and Chicago, the rise and fall of prohibition in AC. Lots of drinking, smoking, nudity, badass murders. Highly recommended. Available on HBOgo and on demand.
I am looking at Mad Men, Sopranos, Deadwood, or Archer for my next binge if anyone wants to recommend one.
