Recycling of coaches (1 Viewer)

Del Rio to Oakland? really? Wasn't he a flop in Jacksonville? What's with the recycling of coaches? I know some get a bad rap in certain situations and deserve another chance to be a head coach, but some of these guys are losers wherever they go, so I don't see why they keep getting head coaching jobs. You see this a lot in baseball as well. Why not give the job to someone that's never had a head coaching job?

Oh wait a minute........if they quit recycling coaches New England never would have got Bill Belichick.

I've said it numerous times. A lot of these guys are not geniuses at picking coaches and the coaches are not geniuses at coaching. Some of them would be asking you 'would you like fries with that?' if they weren't kissing ### and sucking up to others in the profession.

Current recycled HCs:

Pete Carroll

Bill Belichick

Tom Coughlin

Rex Ryan

Andy Reid

Ken Whisenhunt

Let's throw John Fox in here.

Make a better list. Go ahead.

dont forget some of these organizations cant be all that attractive to work for. would you want to work for the raiders?

Probably the same reason a guy with 15 years experience in your field of work gets hired over the guy with no experience.

I put these guys into four categories.

Recycled trash - Del Rio, Fox

Good coaches who wore out their welcome being good - Coughlin, Reid

Guys who never had a fair chance because they coached for the Browns, Jets, Raiders

Guys who needed more experience elsewhere - Carroll (although he fits into the above category)

It's an arbitrary cut-off, but 11 of the last 17 super bowls have been won by coaches with their second teams.

edit: if I've done this correctly, just 3 of the first 31 were won by second-time head coaches.

Depending on the individual and his staff, there may be far less coaching and more managing than most people ever let on to.

If you're going to have a great DC and OC with quality position coaches, maybe you just want a tough minded football guy to manage them.

I'd like to see Sylvester Croom get a job as OC again or even HC. He's worked for such an impressive list of previous coaches and played for Bear Bryant, and Alabama's commitment to excellence award is named after him for the top player/person combo in an individual and....I don't know why this guy doesn't get more love as a HC candidate

Lets look at some of these new guys that got first chances and haven't got another chance yet and probably for good reason. Excuse my spelling.

Josh McDaniels

Rod Marenlli

Jim Schwatz

Nick Saban

Lane Kiffin

Marty Morningwig

I am sure there is a lot more.

Most GMs don't have the job security to hire an out of the blue, up and coming assistant with no head coaching experience. If it doesn't work out they are likely gone with that coach.

No schtick, I used to fax my resume to Al Davis every time the HC job opened up. Not even a football resume. My real, corporate-world-type resume. Listing my jobs and school and all that. My cover letter detailed my football head coaching experience: I detailed my fantasy championships, my Madden dynasty stats, and my ability to read a clock and understand when to call a timeout.

I never got a response :kicksrock:
You sir are my hero!!!

Also on the list are:

Lovie Smith

Jim Caldwell

Jeff Fisher

Bruce Arians (sort of)
It might be easier to list the coaches who are successful their first try.

Mike Tomlin

John Harbaugh

Ron Rivera

Marvin Lewis

Jason Garrett

Mike Mccarthy

With the exception of Rivera and Lewis, these coaches work for some of the best run franchises in the league (over the long term).

Try sending to Dan Snyder next season. You probably meet all his qualifications.

I wouldn't consider Garrett's tenure as coach of the Cowboys a successful one. Certainly not at this point. Also wouldn't consider the Cowboys as one of the best run franchises in the league.

They need to hire a guy with no football experience, but an IQ of like 160. A bona fide genius. I'd love to see what they came up with.

Admittedly, he and the franchise might currently be a notch below the others but would you deny that the Cowboys, historically, have had more success than the average franchise? The Cowboys also have had one losing season in the past decade.

Garrett has a .568 record, though the bulk of his success is this year.

There was an article a few years back on a guy that did this. I can't remember for what team. Was it you?

In Oakland, I think JDR, Trestman and Smith can bring some stability, leadership and experience. I mean it's been a long time since Oakland could even get decent candidates to interview, they should be stoked.

If you want innovation, look to the colleges where coaches can try things. Chip Kelly and Harbaugh come to mind.

It's not always the right thing, but withit's hard to find an innovator who is also a great organizer, hard worker, a good leader and judge of talent. Rare combo.

I think when you see coaches available at a young age available on a coaching tree you get them. The Saints have actually produced two head coaches from Sean Payton, and Payton came from Parcells ultimately. The Walsh coaching tree was very bountiful.

I'm more mystified why when teams find a good thing they move away from it. Maybe it's ownership that changes. Personally I think organizations should be about something. The old Paul Brown Browns lost Brown, but his tree turned into Sam Wyche at CIN (SB) and Walsh (SF), who began Holmgren (GB) and Reid (PHI).

So I'd say if I was an owner I'd ask who is the future coaching tree of today?

Like they said on Mike & Mike, there are many coaches that were very successful in their 2nd HC gig. 3rd HC team not so much, Carroll is the only real stand out.

Just not seeing what there is to get excited about with JDR...

Here are the Jags rankings according to pro-football-reference. These are the rankings for scoring offense and defense. His best years were 2005 - 2007. Then the wheels fell off.

2003

O - 25 D - 18

2004

O - 29 D - 7

2005

O - 12 D - 6

2006

O - 9 D - 6

2007

O - 6 D - 10

2008

O - 24 D - 21

2009

O - 24 D - 24

2010

O - 18 D - 27

2011 (3-8 before he was ousted)

O - 28 D - 11

If he were to get Trestman as OC I'd feel better. But if he brings in one of these other retreads with zero creativity and inability to make in game adjustments...Raiders fans can say hello to 5 - 11 or 7 - 9 records. Which is better than what they've been getting a guess.

yeah historically they have been more successful than average, but over the past 15 years they've been dysfunctional more often than not.

as far as garrett, 1 playoff appearance after 5 years isn't my idea of successful

it's kind of funny how quickly perceptions can change -- just a few years ago harbaugh, kelly, and carroll were all widely viewed by fans as unfit for the pro football because they were college coaches, maybe carroll in particular was seen as a failed pro coach who belonged in college.

now they're cited as examples to bring more college coaches into the nfl.

as for 'coaching trees', I think a lot of that is also perception --- how far back are we going on these things?

is there really a belichick 'tree' or is he simply some branch of the parcells tree?

how about these guys if you're looking for a coaching tree?:

mike nolan

mike smith

rex ryan

chuck pagano

mike pettine

teryl austin

dennis thurman....? (probably too old)

It really comes down to whether or not the team has a good QB. If recycled HC is going to a team without a good QB and they don't luck into one in the draft, then it will almost certainly end in failure.

It helped that New England got Tom Brady too the same year. Otherwise Belichick is probably not still with the Patriots.

I doubt kraft fires a guy based on your imagination

even though they do say a young boy's imagination is the most powerful thing in the world

Could you imagine the Patriots winning a Superbowl any of those years without Brady?

Yeah.....Matt Cassel was pretty good for that one year.
