hope not a Honda (mild search) - In Peter King's mailbag column yesterday, a reader suggested the possibility of bringing soccer's card system to pro football for excessive hits. I wonder how things would change on the field if the danger of having to play 10-handed for the rest of a game existed.

If a "red card" system was implemented hopefully the league would be smart enough to only throw the player out of the game. they couldn't require the team to only play with 10 men on the field. It would be ridiculous. Either a team would generate no pass rush at all or not have enough players in coverage. Manning, Brady, Brees (and in reality most QBs) would eat up a defense with only 10 men on the field.

Terrible idea.If you want to fix the hits you really just need to beef up the ejection rules. Playing the game with 10 players is effectively an auto-loss in the NFL with anything more than 10 minutes left on the clock.

I love soccer, but this is a terrible idea. Soccer is a lot easier to play with unbalanced squads than football is. Persistant fouling needs a more powerful deterent in that sport because a free-kick is usually a lot less impactful than a 15 yard penalty. I am also opposed to giving the referees more discresion over the game; they have too much already. It seems like college football will be doing the ejection part atleast.

Sounds horrible.A couple things could clean up the excessive hits. Instead of fining people a certain amount, fine them a percentage of their game check. 20-30 grand for some guys is a TON (and generally these don't seem to be the guys getting fined a lot), while 20-30 grand for some of the guys is chump change and not enough for them to care.Or maybe even a better idea...........fine the TEAM, not the player. The trickle down effect of this from the owner to the coaches could work out very well. Or do both of those things. Fine the team, while at the same time fine the player a percentage of his check. A guy might think twice the first time he is fined 200k for a cheap shot. And for kicks, have the money collected from the fine go to the player who just got his head taken off.

Ejecting a player and letting his replacement take over could be deterrent enough in some cases. It is not as bad as playing with 10 players, since you get to keep 11 on the field. If the player ejected is a starter then the ejection will have a big impact. But, if a backup is ejected it will not have the desired effect. So ejection will still have to be accompanied by yardage penalty and/or fines.

I want to have as many offensive players on the team facing a 10 man defense!!! :moneybag: :moneybag:
