Red Fans - Will Weathers be the closer? (1 Viewer)

Yes.

The job is his.

If the Reds are in contention at the deadline, they could conceivably deal for a more "lights out" type of arm.

If Weathers stumbles, they could turn to Coffey, Stanton, Saarloos or a different warm body.

For now, though, David Weathers is the closer.

It'd be great to see Saarloos get his head back. He is a soft tosser, but has good command. I wonder if he can flourish with less pressure.

Small sample size, but he's looked great so far...and Narron has been entrusting him with 8th inning duties. Saarloos has reminded me a lot of Danny Graves in the 1999-2001 era in that he won't rack up the ideal amount of K's for a reliever, but his ball sinks and darts with so much movement that he's a weapon as a high inning ground ball specialist. He can get you out of jams by way of double play if he can't get the strikeout.I liked him as a 5th starter candidate in spring training, but it looks like his game may be more well-suited to being co-setup man with Todd Coffey.

He is the closer at least until Guardado gets back in, I think, late June.. The idea of them trading for a top closer is unlikely unless Every-day-eddie has some setbacks and Weathers falters. Even then, um, I doubt it.

Yeah, given recent history, the Reds are more likely to trade for half a dozen scrub middle relievers and try to make one of them into a closer than to trade for an elite closer.

Right, but I'm not sure how much recent history applies with a new ownership/management group.

If Guardado is back to a significant role in the big leagues 9 months after Tommy John surgery, that will be a first.

Last year doesn't count? The new group is the one that pulled the trigger on the awful Lopez + Kearns > 3 bags of balls trades

:goodposting: David Weathers, Mike Stanton, Eddie Guardado, Gary Majewski, Bill Bray and Kirk Saarloos don't belong on this list as scrub MRs, but in the past 18 months...Victor SantosBrian MeadowsKerry LigtenbergDustin HermansonRick WhiteJoe MaysRheal Cormier (maybe)Esteban YanJason JohnsonScott SchoenweisRyan Franklin...could fit the description of throw it against the wall to see if it sticks. A number of these reclamation projects were in the closer discussion at one time or another. The track record of mining for MR gold by acqiring questionable arms has continued with the new management.Happens with nearly every team though.
